Asteroids are usually rocky or metallic, relatively inactive bodies, while comets contain volatile ices mixed with dust and rock that can vaporize near the Sun. That heating can create a diffuse coma around a comet’s solid nucleus and sometimes produce dust and ion tails. The distinction is useful, but it is not a perfect visual test: a distant or weakly active comet may look like an asteroid, and some objects first classified as asteroids are later reclassified after sensitive observations reveal comet-like activity.

Both are small Solar System bodies that orbit the Sun. A comet is not a meteor, and an asteroid is not a star. The most dependable clues are composition, response to solar heating, orbital behavior and observations made with instruments—not simply whether a photograph shows a tail.

Asteroid and comet: the essential difference

NASA’s introductory definition describes an asteroid as a relatively small, inactive, rocky body. A comet is a relatively small object whose ices can vaporize in sunlight, forming an atmosphere (called a coma) of dust and gas and sometimes a tail. NASA’s wording captures the central contrast: composition and solar-driven activity.

Asteroids generally expose solid rock or metal and do not continuously release large clouds of gas and dust when they pass through the inner Solar System. Comet nuclei contain frozen volatile substances—materials that readily turn to gas when warmed—mixed with dust and rocky matter. As a comet approaches the Sun, escaping gas can drag dust away from the nucleus. Sunlight and the solar wind then shape that material into a coma and, when activity is strong enough, one or more tails.

These are general categories rather than an infallible field test. Some comets are too far from the Sun or too faintly active to show a visible coma. A small fraction of objects labeled asteroids may be inactive or “burned-out” comet nuclei, and an object’s official designation can change when new orbital or physical evidence becomes available.

Comparison Asteroid, generally Comet, generally
Material Rocky or metallic Volatile ices mixed with dust and rock
Response to solar heating Usually no obvious outgassing Ices may vaporize, releasing gas and dust
Surrounding structure Usually no coma May develop a coma around the nucleus
Tail Not a defining feature Dust and/or ion tails may form during activity
Classification caveat Some may be inactive or extinct comet nuclei May look asteroid-like when distant or weakly active

The table describes tendencies, not rules that every object satisfies. NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies FAQ notes that a small portion of the asteroid population may be burned-out comet nuclei.

What an asteroid is

Rocky or metallic body

An asteroid is a small body that orbits the Sun and is generally made of rock, metal or a mixture of both. Its surface is usually solid, and its appearance in a telescope is dominated by a compact point or disk of reflected sunlight rather than a surrounding cloud of gas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Usually inactive near the Sun

“Inactive” does not mean an asteroid never changes. Impacts, cracking, rotation, heating and collisions can alter its surface. It means that ordinary solar heating usually does not drive a conspicuous, sustained flow of vapor and dust like the activity associated with a typical comet. An asteroid can brighten because its viewing geometry changes, not because it has developed a coma.

Where the simple definition has limits

Asteroid-like bodies can have unusual histories. A comet that has lost most of its easily vaporized material may become dormant or extinct and appear asteroid-like. Conversely, a body cataloged as an asteroid may later reveal weak outgassing. Classification therefore combines what an object is made of with what it does and how its motion responds to forces.

What a comet is

The nucleus is the solid body

A comet’s nucleus is the solid central object: frozen volatile material mixed with dust and rocky matter. It is the part that follows the comet’s orbit around the Sun. From Earth, however, the nucleus may be difficult or impossible to see directly when a bright coma surrounds it.

The coma is a temporary atmosphere

When sunlight warms the nucleus, some ice changes directly into gas. Jets of escaping gas can lift dust from the surface, creating a diffuse envelope around the nucleus. This envelope is the coma. It is not a second solid object and it is not the comet’s entire “head”; the head seen in many images consists of the nucleus plus the surrounding coma.

Activity changes with distance

A comet can be nearly inactive while far from the Sun, then become much brighter as heating increases. Activity may also be uneven across the nucleus, intermittent or too faint for a particular telescope or camera. For that reason, the absence of a visible coma at one observation time does not establish that an object is an asteroid.

How comet tails form—and why they point away from the Sun

Dust tail

Dust released from the coma reflects sunlight. Individual grains follow slightly different paths from the nucleus because radiation pressure and orbital motion affect them. The visible dust tail is therefore commonly broad and curved rather than a straight line.

Ion tail

Ultraviolet sunlight ionizes some of the gas in the coma. The solar wind—flowing charged particles from the Sun—then carries those ions into a generally narrow, straighter tail. The ion tail points approximately away from the Sun, even when the comet’s direction of travel is different.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A tail is not an arrow showing the comet’s route

It is a common mistake to assume that a tail trails behind a comet like smoke behind a moving vehicle. Tail direction is controlled mainly by sunlight, radiation pressure and the solar wind. The tail can point in a direction that is not opposite the comet’s instantaneous velocity, and its orientation changes as the comet follows its orbit.

Some comets show both a dust tail and an ion tail; some show only one clearly; and some show no obvious tail from Earth. The NASA Solar System chapter explains how solar forces shape material around active comets.

How to tell a comet from an asteroid

Use the following checks in order. They work best when combined with a reliable orbit and repeated observations rather than a single photograph.

1. Look for a diffuse coma, not just a bright point

A fuzzy envelope around a compact central source is strong evidence of cometary activity. The coma may be large and obvious or barely detectable. Compare images taken with enough sensitivity to distinguish an extended cloud from a star-like point. A point-like appearance favors an asteroid, but it does not rule out a dormant or weakly active comet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Check for outgassing or changing brightness

Repeated observations can reveal jets, a growing coma or a brightness increase that tracks solar heating. Such activity supports a comet interpretation. Ordinary changes in an asteroid’s brightness can result from rotation or viewing geometry, so a single increase is not enough by itself.

3. If a tail is visible, identify its structure

A curved, sunlight-reflecting feature is consistent with a dust tail. A narrow, straighter feature directed away from the Sun is consistent with an ion tail. A tail is compelling evidence of active cometary behavior, but a missing tail is not evidence that an object must be an asteroid.

4. Examine the orbit and its residuals

Cometary outgassing acts like a very small thruster. Over many observations, that thrust can produce nongravitational perturbations—differences between the measured motion and the path predicted using gravity alone. Detectable perturbations can point to venting even when images do not show a coma.

5. Use physical measurements when available

Spectroscopy, infrared observations, radar, thermal measurements and long-term imaging can reveal surface and volatile properties that a visible-light image cannot. Professional classification may rely on this combination of evidence rather than on an unaided visual impression.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why a visual test can fail

Distant comets may be inactive

Solar heating falls rapidly with distance. A comet far from the Sun may not release enough gas or dust to create a detectable coma. Even near the Sun, activity can be below the sensitivity limit of the instrument or hidden by background light.

Activity can be intermittent

Outgassing may occur in localized jets or short episodes. An observation made between active episodes can make a comet look like a compact asteroid. Different telescopes, filters and exposure times can also produce different conclusions.

Asteroid-like objects can have cometary histories

After repeated passages near the Sun, a comet may lose much of its accessible volatile material. The resulting dormant or extinct nucleus can remain on a comet-like orbit while showing little visible activity. This is one reason the boundary is scientifically useful but not perfectly sharp.

Case study: near-Earth object 1998 SH2

NASA/JPL reported on July 16, 2026 that near-Earth object 1998 SH2, previously treated as an asteroid, was reinterpreted as an active comet. Earlier images did not show obvious cometary activity. Later, the object’s motion displayed nongravitational perturbations that were difficult to explain with gravity acting on an ordinary asteroid alone. Researchers hypothesized a small thrust caused by gas venting, and observations during its August 2025 close approach supplied evidence of visible cometary activity.

Study lead Davide Farnocchia, a navigation engineer with NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies at JPL, said: “After we measured the nongravitational perturbations affecting the motion of 1998 SH2 and recognized they weren’t compatible with the object being an asteroid, we suspected the object could be an active comet.” The report illustrates an important point: an object can be misclassified when only part of the evidence is available, and weak activity can escape detection.

It does not mean that every asteroid designation is doubtful. Most objects classified as asteroids do not suddenly become comets. Rather, 1998 SH2 demonstrates why astronomers revisit classifications when precise orbit tracking and more sensitive observations reveal new behavior. Read the NASA/JPL account of 1998 SH2 for the reported observations and analysis.

Orbit: useful clue, not a complete answer

Both comets and asteroids orbit the Sun, so orbiting the Sun cannot distinguish them. Their orbital shapes can provide context: many comets travel on elongated or otherwise distinctive paths, while many asteroids occupy more nearly circular or moderately eccentric orbits. But orbital families overlap, and an asteroid-like orbit does not prove an object lacks ice.

For near-Earth objects, precise orbit fitting is especially valuable. Astronomers compare the measured positions over time with a gravitational model. A small systematic deviation may indicate nongravitational forces such as outgassing. The effect is tiny, so it generally requires observations spanning multiple dates and careful error analysis.

Orbit information also helps separate a comet or asteroid from an atmospheric phenomenon. A comet or asteroid is a body traveling around the Sun; a meteor is a flash produced when a much smaller particle enters Earth’s atmosphere.

Comet, asteroid, meteoroid, meteor and meteorite

These terms describe different objects or events:

  • Comet: A Solar System body containing volatile ices mixed with dust and rock; solar heating can produce a coma and tails.
  • Asteroid: A generally rocky or metallic Solar System body with no persistent, obvious comet-like activity.
  • Meteoroid: A smaller piece of rock or metal orbiting the Sun, often shed by a comet or produced by an asteroid collision.
  • Meteor: The streak of light created when a meteoroid enters Earth’s atmosphere and heats the surrounding air. “Shooting star” is an informal name for this event.
  • Meteorite: Material from a meteoroid that survives atmospheric passage and reaches the ground.

Thus a meteor is not a comet seen close up. It is an atmospheric flash caused by a much smaller particle. NASA’s Asteroid or Meteor explainer and Asteroid Fast Facts set out these distinctions.

Common misconceptions

“Comets are dirty snowballs, and asteroids are clean rocks.”

“Dirty snowball” is a memorable shorthand, not a complete classification rule. Comet nuclei contain ice, dust and rocky material; asteroids can have varied compositions and histories. Some comet remnants are dry and asteroid-like, while some asteroids can exhibit activity. NASA’s space-rock overview presents the broader range of small-body types.

“Every comet has a permanent tail.”

A tail forms only when released material is sufficiently illuminated and shaped by solar forces. A comet can be inactive, distant, faint or viewed under conditions that hide its tail. Tail length and brightness also change over time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The tail always points behind the comet.”

The tail generally points away from the Sun, not necessarily behind the comet’s motion. Dust and ion tails can have different shapes and orientations.

“If no coma appears in one image, the object is an asteroid.”

One image has limited sensitivity and timing. Weak or intermittent activity, distance, background light and instrument settings can all hide a coma. Repeated observations and orbital analysis are safer grounds for classification.

“A meteor is a small comet.”

A meteor is the light produced in Earth’s atmosphere by a meteoroid. The meteoroid may have originated from a comet or asteroid, but the visible streak is an event, not the parent body.

A practical identification checklist

When examining an unfamiliar small Solar System object, ask:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Is it a body following an orbit around the Sun, or a brief streak inside Earth’s atmosphere?
  • Does the image show a diffuse coma around a compact nucleus?
  • Is there a curved dust feature, a straighter ion feature, or no tail?
  • Could the apparent fuzziness be caused by focus, tracking error or background light?
  • Does repeated imaging show changing activity as the object’s solar distance changes?
  • Do precise orbit measurements reveal nongravitational perturbations consistent with outgassing?
  • Are the conclusions based on one observation or on a time series from multiple instruments?

A positive answer to the coma, tail or outgassing questions supports cometary activity. A clean point-like appearance with no detected activity is consistent with an asteroid, but it is not proof that the object has never been a comet or that weak activity is absent.

What scientists mean by “comet” and “asteroid” in practice

Scientific labels summarize the best available evidence about an object’s composition and behavior. They are not always permanent descriptions of an unchanging category. An object can be dormant for years, active near perihelion and quiet again later. Improved cameras may reveal a faint coma that earlier surveys missed. More accurate astrometry may expose tiny outgassing forces in the orbit.

That is why professional catalogs and mission teams may update an object’s designation or description. The update reflects better evidence, not a contradiction in the laws of physics. For everyday identification, “rocky and inactive” versus “icy and active” is a sound first approximation; for research, the decision can require spectroscopy, thermal data, repeated imaging and dynamical analysis.

Bottom line

A comet and an asteroid are both Sun-orbiting small bodies, but a comet contains volatile ices that can vaporize and release gas and dust. That process may create a coma and dust or ion tails. Asteroids are generally rocky or metallic and lack persistent, obvious outgassing. Use visible activity as a clue, not an absolute test: no tail does not rule out a comet, and precise orbital behavior can reveal activity that images miss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an asteroid ever have a tail?

Some objects classified as asteroids can show dust or gas activity, and some may be dormant or extinct comet nuclei. When the activity is confirmed, astronomers may revise the object’s classification rather than treating a tail as proof that every asteroid is a conventional comet.

Do all comets come from the same part of the Solar System?

No. Comets occupy a range of orbits and can approach the Sun from different reservoirs. The comparison between comet and asteroid in this article depends on material and activity, not on assigning every comet to one source region.

Can I identify a comet with the unaided eye?

You may notice a bright coma or tail, but unaided viewing cannot reliably classify every object. A faint comet can look star-like, and apparent fuzziness can come from atmospheric or optical effects. Confirmed identification uses repeated observations and orbital or physical measurements.

Why can a comet’s tail point sideways or even appear ahead of it?

Tail direction is controlled by solar radiation pressure and the solar wind, which push material away from the Sun. Because the comet is also moving along its orbit, the resulting tail can appear at an angle that is not simply behind the nucleus.
