A column guide is a nonprinting line that marks where columns of type should sit on a page. It helps organize and align text and other content; it is a layout aid, not part of the printed page.
What does column guide mean?
In desktop publishing, a column guide marks the location or boundaries of columns in a page layout. The glossary in Typographic Design: Form and Communication defines it as “Nonprinting lines that define the location of columns of type.”
Column guides give a designer a visual structure for placing content. They do not, by themselves, create text or print as lines on the finished page.

- Margins mark the outer boundary of the page’s content area.
- Column guides divide or organize the area within those margins into columns. The gap between columns is called the gutter.
- Text-frame columns divide text within one individual frame. Their settings are separate from the page’s margin and column settings.
In Adobe InDesign, page-level columns are set with a column count and gutter. These settings can apply to a page or spread, and pages based on a parent page can inherit its settings. In contrast, text-frame columns are configured for an individual frame. Adobe’s document setup, margins, and columns instructions and text frame properties instructions describe these as separate controls.

Set page-level column guides in InDesign
- Select the page or spread to change.
- Choose Layout > Margins and Columns.
- Enter the number of columns and the gutter width, then apply the settings.
Adobe also documents adjusting column guides on individual pages or spreads, including changing the widths to create unequal columns. Menu names and behavior can vary between InDesign versions; Adobe’s cited instructions were last updated June 2, 2026.
Set columns inside a text frame
To control columns within one frame rather than the page layout, select the frame and choose Object > Text Frame Options. Set the column count, width, and gutter there. These frame-level settings work independently of the page’s margins and columns. See Adobe’s text frame properties instructions.

Show or hide guides
In InDesign, choose View > Grids & Guides > Show Guides or Hide Guides. Hiding guides changes their visibility in the working view; it does not remove or alter page content. Adobe’s current documentation distinguishes guide colors in the document view: margin guides are magenta, column guides violet, and ruler guides cyan. Those colors describe InDesign’s interface, not a universal publishing convention. See Adobe’s show-or-hide-guides instructions.
