Colossal Biosciences says its de-extinction project has reached a new research milestone: a machine-learning system called GenoMorph has narrowed the search for dodo-like genetic changes to approximately 2,300 candidate DNA targets. The work may improve the odds of engineering a living bird with selected dodo traits, but it is not a clone, a complete genetic recreation or evidence that a dodo has been born.
What Colossal announced
Reported by Fast Company on October 14, 2026, the advance combines Colossal’s comparative-biology analysis with additional work on delivering genome-editing tools in bird eggs. The company says GenoMorph identified about 2,300 regulatory targets linked to characteristics including beak size and shape.
Colossal also reported using lipid nanoparticles to deliver editing tools inside an avian egg. That result addresses one of the practical problems in bird genetic engineering: getting molecular machinery into the right cells at the right stage of development.
The project remains an attempt to build a functional reconstruction. Colossal’s proposed animal would be based on a living pigeon relative, especially the Nicobar pigeon, with selected dodo-associated changes intended to produce a large, ground-dwelling, fruit-eating bird. It would not contain an untouched copy of the extinct bird’s genome.

How GenoMorph chooses likely dodo traits
GenoMorph is designed for a problem that a DNA-only comparison cannot solve. Its training data combine:
- DNA sequences from living birds;
- three-dimensional measurements of bird skulls; and
- developmental gene-expression data showing how facial structures form.
The system uses those datasets to infer which non-coding or regulatory regions may influence anatomy. Regulatory DNA can affect when, where and how strongly genes are switched on, so identifying those regions is important when the goal is to reproduce a shape rather than simply copy a protein-coding sequence.
The result is a prioritized list for laboratory testing, not a list of edits that has already been proven to produce a dodo feature. A candidate target still has to be edited, carried through avian reproduction and evaluated in a developing bird.

Why reconstructing a dodo is unusually difficult
Colossal has only one dodo genome. With a living species, researchers can compare many individuals and look for variants consistently associated with a trait. A single extinct genome does not provide that population-level comparison.
Beth Shapiro, who advises the project, explained that the team therefore combines sequence data from many living birds with skull shape and developmental measurements. The aim is to identify changes that plausibly distinguish dodos from their closest living relatives while separating meaningful biology from ordinary variation.
The 2026 genome-quality figures also need careful interpretation. Colossal says 95% of the dodo assembly’s bases are covered at least five times, with average coverage of 65-fold. Those are sequencing metrics describing confidence in the assembled DNA sequence; they do not mean that 95% of a living dodo has been recreated.

What has to happen after the DNA analysis
A successful animal would require several linked technologies, each with its own failure points:
- Select and validate edits. Researchers must test whether the approximately 2,300 candidates actually affect the desired anatomy and whether changing them creates harmful effects elsewhere.
- Edit a living relative. The proposed starting point is a pigeon relative, with the Nicobar pigeon highlighted as a particularly relevant candidate.
- Reach the germ line. Edited changes must be present in primordial germ cells or equivalent reproductive cells so they can be inherited, rather than appearing only in a single embryo.
- Grow and reproduce edited cells. Colossal has described long-term culture of pigeon primordial germ cells and gene-edited chicken surrogate technology as earlier avian work supporting this stage.
- Develop embryos. Edited cells must contribute to an embryo in an egg or surrogate system and develop into a viable bird.
- Raise and assess the animal. The resulting bird would need to survive under current welfare conditions and express the intended anatomy and behavior without unacceptable health problems.
Nature Biotechnology described the broader challenge as a combination of computational biology, cellular engineering, genetic engineering, embryology and animal husbandry. Progress in one discipline does not guarantee success in the others.
Why this is not conventional cloning
Cloning normally starts with an intact living cell from the animal being copied and uses nuclear transfer to place that nucleus into an egg. An extinct dodo cannot provide such a cell. Colossal’s approach instead edits cells from a living relative and uses avian germ-cell and embryo technologies.

| Question | Conventional cloning | Colossal’s proposed reconstruction |
|---|---|---|
| Starting material | A living donor cell with a complete nucleus | Living pigeon-relative cells plus an extinct dodo genome sequence |
| Genetic method | Nuclear transfer into an egg | Targeted genome editing and transmission through avian germ cells |
| Reproductive bottleneck | Embryo development from the transferred nucleus | Editing, culturing and transmitting germ cells, then developing embryos in eggs or surrogate systems |
| Success criterion | A genetic copy of the donor animal | Whether an engineered bird expresses selected dodo traits and can perform a proposed ecological role |
Because the source animal is a pigeon relative, the outcome would be genetically mixed by design. Calling it a “dodo-like bird,” “functional dodo” or “genetically edited pigeon relative” is more precise than calling it a resurrected original.

The answer depends on how a species is defined. Shapiro has argued that species labels can rely on an arbitrary threshold of sequence similarity: a threshold that may differ depending on the question being asked. Under a strict taxonomic definition, a bird descended from a pigeon lineage with selected edits would not necessarily be the same species as the extinct dodo.

Shapiro described the operational goal as creating “a large ground-dwelling fruit-eating bird that can restore the dodo’s ecological niche.” That places anatomy, behavior and ecological contribution alongside genetic identity when judging the project.

When could a bird appear?
Colossal described a five-to-seven-year route to seeing a returned bird in 2025. That is a company projection, not an independently verified delivery date. The cited reporting contains no confirmed birth of a dodo or dodo-like bird, so the timeline should be treated as a target that depends on every stage working together.
The company raised $200 million for its broader de-extinction programs, according to Nature Biotechnology in 2025. Funding can support laboratories, animal facilities and long development cycles, but it does not establish that the biological milestones have been achieved.
Why the original dodo disappeared
The dodo was a flightless bird endemic to Mauritius. Accounts of its disappearance connect it with human arrival, hunting and invasive species introduced to the island. The available reporting does not establish a single precise extinction year, so a specific date should not be presented as settled fact here.
That history also complicates any ecological restoration claim. A future engineered bird would live in a Mauritius shaped by centuries of habitat change, introduced animals and altered human activity. Reproducing a body plan is separate from proving that the modern ecosystem can safely support the animal.
What this milestone does—and does not—prove
- It shows a narrower computational search for DNA regions that may influence dodo-like anatomy.
- It adds a reported method for delivering editing tools into an avian egg.
- It builds on earlier work with pigeon germ cells and chicken surrogate systems.
- It does not demonstrate a complete dodo genome in a living cell.
- It does not demonstrate a successful edited embryo, fertile edited lineage or living dodo-like bird.
- It does not settle whether a functional reconstruction would qualify as the extinct species.
The practical significance is therefore incremental but real: Colossal has reduced one part of the search space and reported progress on avian delivery technology. The decisive evidence would come later, when edited germ cells produce healthy, fertile birds whose anatomy, behavior and ecological performance can be measured.
