Colorlib Error 404 V9 is a free, editable website error-page template with a call to action. It supplies the page’s appearance—not the server behavior: your site still needs to return an HTTP 404 response for a missing URL. Add a clear route back into the site, then verify the status after implementation.
What Colorlib Error 404 V9 includes
Colorlib describes V9 as “A 100% flexible and responsive free error page with a CTA template that you can implement to any website or blog.” Its page says the design can be edited to fit a site and lists the license as CC BY 3.0. The official listing has conflicting dates: its post date is March 25, 2021, while a separate “Released” field says 2025. Neither should be treated as an unambiguous release year. Colorlib’s 2026 guide characterizes V9 as a neutral corporate-style design built with plain HTML and CSS, using the Cabin font and a home link alongside a missing-or-moved-page notice. That description is useful for setting expectations, but check the actual files and license details before adapting them to your site. The template’s CTA gives visitors a next step; it does not repair the missing URL that brought them there.

Yes. The visual page and the HTTP response are separate. A server can display a polished “page not found” design while returning 200 OK, which tells browsers and crawlers that the requested page succeeded. Configure the site to return 404 Not Found for genuinely missing URLs, and test the response after deployment. Colorlib’s guide warns that a page returning 200 instead can become a soft 404 and may be indexed. That warning is Colorlib’s guidance, not a quoted Google statement. How to make the server show the custom page
The configuration depends on how the site is hosted. Colorlib’s guide gives these examples for a static error document:

In the relevant server configuration, use:
error_page 404 /404.html;Apply configuration changes using your host’s normal process, then request a URL that does not exist and confirm both that the intended design appears and that the response status is 404. A custom error document alone is not proof that the server is returning the correct status.

WordPress theme
WordPress themes ordinarily handle missing-page output with a 404.php template. If you are integrating V9 into a theme, adapt its markup and styling to the theme rather than assuming a standalone HTML file will be used automatically. Check a deliberately invalid URL and verify its response status.

What should the page tell visitors?
A useful 404 page makes the problem clear without leaving the visitor at a dead end. Colorlib recommends a plain missing-page message and a home link, with site search or links to popular content as additional ways forward. Use a CTA that genuinely helps the visitor continue; do not imply that the requested content is available when it is not.
- State plainly that the page could not be found or may have moved.
- Offer a prominent link to the home page.
- Add search or useful destination links if your site has them.
- Keep the design legible and consistent with the site’s branding and navigation.
Is V9 different from Colorlib’s WordPress 404 Customizer?
Yes. V9 is presented as an editable page template; Colorlib’s 404 Customizer is a separate WordPress plugin project. Its documentation describes 20 ready-made designs, edits through the WordPress Customizer, and options for text, colors, backgrounds, social or contact links, and theme header and footer settings. The project states that it serves a real 404 response and adds noindex. Its documentation lists WordPress 6.0 or later and PHP 7.4 or later as requirements, and says it has been tested up to WordPress 7.0. These are the project’s compatibility declarations; confirm current requirements and suitability for your installation before adopting it. The repository documents the project under GPLv3-or-later, distinct from V9’s CC BY 3.0 listing.
Do custom 404 pages help SEO?
A well-designed page can help visitors recover, but design alone does not establish an SEO benefit. The important technical point is to return HTTP 404 for a genuinely missing URL rather than serving the error design with a success status. Check the status code and avoid treating a custom design as a substitute for fixing internal links or other causes of broken URLs.
