Colorlib Error 404 V13 is a free HTML/CSS error-page design with a bold red exclamation mark, Chango display type, Montserrat body text, and a single button leading visitors back to the homepage. It is a visual template, not a complete server setup: you must configure your site to serve it for missing pages and verify those requests return an HTTP 404 status.
What Colorlib Error 404 V13 includes
Colorlib describes V13 as a high-contrast design built around a red exclamation mark rather than an illustration. The design uses Chango for display text, Montserrat for body copy, a brief explanation, and one “Back to homepage” button. Colorlib says the exclamation-mark treatment avoids an image file that would otherwise need to be hosted or replaced. The download is plain HTML and CSS. Colorlib’s 2026 roundup presents it among its free 404 templates.
The page gives a visitor one clear route out of a dead end: return to the home page. Before publishing, change that button’s link to your actual homepage, and adjust the copy and colors to fit your brand. The template can be adapted, but it does not automatically inherit your site’s branding or navigation.

The plugin is a separate option, not a WordPress wrapper for the downloaded file. Its project documentation lists WordPress 6.0 and PHP 7.4 as minimum requirements and GPLv3-or-later licensing. It describes version 1.1.0 and gives a changelog date of “10.08.2026”; the documentation does not clarify the date convention.

If an editable heading matters, select a plugin design other than template 13. If you want to keep your WordPress theme’s header and footer, the plugin’s documented theme-layout options may suit you better than placing the standalone HTML page in the server’s error handling.
Install the downloaded template and test the actual error response
- Download and inspect the HTML/CSS. Identify the homepage button’s destination and the text, colors, and styling you want to adapt.
- Make it fit your site. Change the button link to your real homepage, then edit the copy and colors as needed. Check the page on both desktop and mobile screen sizes.
- Configure your server or framework. Set the site’s missing-page handling to serve the customized error page. The correct configuration depends on your hosting stack; downloading or uploading the template alone does not activate it.
- Request a URL that does not exist. Check the HTTP response status as well as the rendered page. The missing URL should return HTTP 404—not HTTP 200 (a “soft 404”) and not a redirect that conceals the missing resource.
- Fix and retest if the status is wrong. Review the server or framework’s error-route configuration, then request another nonexistent URL. Do not assume the static template controls status codes or indexing behavior.
Colorlib’s roundup recommends adapting a downloaded design to the site’s logo, links, and colors, then configuring the server to serve it. Its note that template pages may need work before use is important: integration is not automatic for every site. Colorlib’s claim that the plugin returns a real 404 status and a noindex tag applies to that documented plugin; it should not be treated as a guarantee for a separately installed HTML file.

When V13 is a good fit
- Choose V13 if you want a distinctive, type-led error page and are comfortable editing HTML/CSS and configuring the site’s error handling.
- Consider the WordPress plugin if you want live customization and theme header/footer options without managing a standalone page in the server configuration.
- Pick another design if you need an editable heading in the plugin or want a more complete navigation path than a single homepage button.
