Color-space conversion transforms color values from one defined encoding or profile into another so the colors retain their intended appearance as closely as the destination allows. The numbers often change; preserving identical RGB, CMYK, or other channel values is not the goal.

What color-space conversion means

A color-space conversion maps values in a source color encoding to values in a destination encoding. For example, an image prepared in an RGB encoding for display may be converted to CMYK for a specific print condition. RGB and CMYK use different ways to describe color, so the resulting channel numbers will generally differ even when the conversion aims to preserve the image’s appearance.

The International Color Consortium (ICC) summarizes one profile class this way: “Profiles with the profile class ‘colorSpace’ convert between a colour encoding and the Profile Connection Space.” ICC colorSpace class documentation

How an ICC conversion works

  1. The source profile describes how the source values relate to the ICC Profile Connection Space (PCS).
  2. A color management module (CMM) applies the source transform to map those values into the PCS.
  3. The destination profile maps from the PCS into values for the destination encoding or device.
  4. The chosen transform and the destination’s capabilities affect the result, particularly when the destination cannot reproduce all source colors.

The PCS is a shared reference interface: it acts as the virtual destination for input transforms and the virtual source for output transforms. A CMM can connect compatible transforms that use the same PCS definition. ICC profile format introduction

For standard ICC v2 and v4 profile connections, the reference PCS uses CIE color matching and standardized D50 illumination. XYZ and Lab may be involved in PCS processing, including conversion between them when source and destination profile spaces differ. ICC connection guide ICC connection guide, part 2

Color space, encoding, profile, PCS, and CMM are different terms

  • Color space: A mathematical way to represent colors, such as XYZ or a particular RGB space.
  • Color encoding: A fuller description of how values are encoded, potentially including the color space, reference medium, and viewing conditions. ICC notes that “color space” is commonly used to mean “color encoding,” though the terms are not strictly identical in its registry usage. ICC Three Component Color Encoding Registry
  • ICC profile: Data that provides transform information linking an encoding or device to the PCS.
  • PCS: The shared reference interface between source and destination transforms.
  • CMM: Software that applies and connects profile transforms.
  • Rendering intent: A transform choice that influences how source colors are mapped when the destination has different capabilities. No one intent is universally best; the appropriate choice depends on the workflow and output.

Why colors can look different across apps, screens, and print

A color’s appearance depends on more than its channel numbers. The source and destination encodings or profiles, the display or print conditions, the CMM, and the transform choice all matter. A destination may also have a smaller gamut—the range of colors it can represent—than the source. In that case, some source colors cannot be reproduced exactly, so the conversion must map them to colors the destination can produce.

To assess a conversion, distinguish between whether the numeric values changed and whether the perceived appearance changed. A useful comparison identifies the source profile, destination profile, destination medium or device, and rendering intent or other transform choice. The ICC notes that CMM transforms involve trade-offs between color quality and performance. ICC FAQ

ICC standards context

The ICC identifies ICC.1:2022, profile version 4.4.0.0, as its current v4 specification. Its status page notes an April 2025 amendment concerning the Adaptive Gain Curve Tag; a further change was anticipated while SMPTE considered approval for video, so that anticipated step should not be treated as completed. The ICC says the first specification version was published in 1994 and that the specification became ISO 15076-1 in 2005. ICC specification status and overview
