Colonial First State (CFS) says marketing automation has cut the time to deploy standard customer journeys from weeks to hours and doubled campaign output. Its approach combines shared customer data with event-triggered communications across email, SMS, push notifications, app and web placements. The figures are CFS-reported results, not independently audited metrics.

How CFS shifted from campaigns to always-on journeys

CFS has been rebuilding its marketing technology to reduce manual campaign work and respond more quickly to member behavior. Rather than relying only on occasional, campaign-led contact, it is moving toward journeys that can run continuously and respond to a member circumstance or action.

The operational change is as important as the automation itself: shared data and reusable journey patterns are intended to let teams produce communications more quickly and engage members when an interaction may be relevant. CFS Group executive for the Customer Office Richard Burns described the objective as being helpful “in the moment they’re in, and in the moments that matter.”

What marketing automation platform does Colonial First State use?

iTnews identifies Adobe Experience Platform as the system CFS uses to bring customer data together and Adobe Journey Optimizer as the tool used to orchestrate communications. Adobe’s Adobe Summit 2026 session listing also names those products and describes the broad use case of personalized member experiences. That page is vendor-authored, so it confirms the platform framing rather than independently validating CFS’s reported results.

The available account does not describe CFS’s integrations, data schemas, consent controls, or platform configuration. It therefore supports identifying the named products, but not a detailed technical blueprint of the implementation.

How CFS uses member data and event-triggered messages

CFS uses email, SMS, push notifications, and personalized placements in its app and web channels. One example is a push notification when a member’s superannuation contribution reaches their account—an interaction Burns likens to a bank alert when a salary deposit arrives.

“Real time” in this case means responding close to a member’s action, not a disclosed technical guarantee of instantaneous processing. CFS has not published a delivery-latency threshold for these journeys.

The communications can also point members toward services that match their needs, including retirement calculators, CFS’s Super Health Check tool, member advice services, and Safewill estate-planning services. These examples show how the company frames personalization as a way to connect members with useful actions, not only as a means of sending more messages.

What results has CFS reported?

Reported result What is established
Standard journey deployment went from weeks to hours CFS reported the reduction to iTnews in October 2026. The report does not give a measurement method, baseline details, or evaluation window.
Campaign output doubled CFS reported the increase to iTnews in October 2026. The report does not define the measurement period or provide an independent audit.
Engagement and customer action improved iTnews describes early personalized activity as improving engagement and action, including increased digital adoption attributed to always-on push communications that brought members into the app. No rate, baseline, sample size, or evaluation method is supplied.

These reported gains describe delivery capacity and early qualitative impact; they do not establish a quantified change in member outcomes, return on investment, or causal effect. CFS has not disclosed how many journeys or members were included.

Why governance remains part of the automation model

Automating more communications depends on reliable data and clear operational responsibility. Burns said, “Success depends on data quality, governance, clear ownership, operational discipline, and effective ways of working.” That emphasis matters in a superannuation context, where an incorrect or poorly timed message can undermine trust even if the delivery system is fast.

CFS also says it uses AI for insights, reducing repetitive work, and personalization while keeping human oversight of important decisions. Burns described AI as augmenting capabilities, with governance standards and human oversight retained throughout processes. The account does not specify which decisions are automated or the detailed controls used.

What the case does—and does not—show

The CFS example shows an operating model built around consolidated data, standardized journey production, and messages triggered near member actions. It does not establish a general benchmark for marketing automation platforms or prove that the same outcomes will follow elsewhere.

  • No implementation dates, program costs, or return-on-investment figures are disclosed.
  • No number of journeys, member reach, engagement-rate change, or digital-adoption rate is provided.
  • No causal test design or independent audit is reported.
  • No platform latency thresholds or detailed configuration, integration, schema, and consent-control information is supplied.

The performance claims and case details are reported by Brad Howarth in iTnews’s October 5, 2026 report. Adobe’s Adobe Summit 2026 session listing corroborates the product names and broad use case, but is promotional vendor material.
