A collision-avoidance system is technology, procedures or a combination of both intended to help prevent a moving vehicle or aircraft from physically contacting another object, terrain or traffic. What it detects and what it does about a hazard depend on the setting: an aircraft system may advise a pilot, a road system may warn a driver, and maritime collision avoidance also relies on navigation rules and operator conduct.
What does “collision avoidance” mean?
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency’s June 2026 glossary for unmanned aircraft defines collision avoidance as “Averting physical contact between an aircraft and any other object or terrain.” The phrase is also used more broadly for road, maritime and other aviation contexts. It does not describe one universal device or design.
In general, a system or procedure supports collision avoidance by helping identify a potential conflict and enabling a response. Depending on the domain, that response may be a warning, advice to maneuver, or a rule governing how an operator navigates. Not every system performs every step, and the term alone does not establish that a system can detect every hazard or prevent every collision.

How do collision-avoidance systems differ by domain?
| Domain | Examples and role | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Crewed aviation | Airborne Collision Avoidance Systems (ACAS), including Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) variants, provide traffic information and, in some variants, maneuver advice. | Some functions depend on nearby aircraft transmitting transponder signals; ACAS operates independently of ground-based air traffic control. |
| Road vehicles | Crash-avoidance approaches include vehicle-based systems, such as radar-based collision warning, and cooperative vehicle-safety systems that use vehicle-to-vehicle communications. | These are broad categories, not a complete inventory of production features or a guarantee of performance. |
| Maritime operations | Collision prevention includes navigation conduct under the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG). | It is not limited to electronic detection equipment; the rules address matters such as safe speed, collision risk and traffic separation schemes. |
| Unmanned aircraft | Collision avoidance means averting physical contact between an aircraft and another object or terrain. | Guidance for crewed aircraft should not automatically be treated as guidance for unmanned aircraft. |
Crewed aircraft: traffic alerts and maneuver advice
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration describes ACAS as a family of airborne systems that works independently of ground-based air traffic control. TCAS I provides traffic advisories to help a crew visually acquire nearby transponder-equipped aircraft. ACAS II—including TCAS II and ACAS Xa—provides traffic advisories and resolution advisories: recommended vertical maneuvers or restrictions intended to maintain or increase separation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Those functions are not interchangeable: a traffic advisory helps the crew notice traffic, while a resolution advisory recommends a response. The applicable requirements vary with operation type, aircraft and airspace. FAA Advisory Circular 90-120, issued November 20, 2024, covers operational use of ACAS for specified U.S. regulatory parts; it expressly excludes other traffic-awareness systems such as ADS-B Traffic Advisory System and unmanned-aircraft collision-avoidance systems.
Road vehicles: vehicle-based and cooperative approaches
NHTSA’s crash-avoidance research overview distinguishes vehicle-based systems, including radar-based collision warning, from cooperative vehicle-safety systems that use vehicle-to-vehicle communications. The distinction is useful because the approaches rely on different sources of information. The overview is not an exhaustive list of every feature in current vehicles, and it does not establish a universal safety outcome for these systems.

At sea: rules and decisions matter too
The International Maritime Organization’s COLREG overview illustrates why maritime collision avoidance is broader than a sensor or alert. The convention includes conduct requirements; Rule 10 addresses safe speed, collision risk and conduct in or near traffic separation schemes. Avoiding a collision at sea therefore involves applying navigation rules as well as any equipment used aboard a vessel.
Unmanned aircraft: do not assume crewed-aircraft rules apply
EASA’s June 2026 glossary supplies a general definition for unmanned-aircraft rules. Separately, the FAA’s AC 90-120 page excludes unmanned-aircraft collision-avoidance systems from that circular’s scope. Those sources do not support treating crewed-aircraft ACAS operating guidance as UAS guidance.

Does a collision-avoidance system prevent every collision?
No universal guarantee follows from the term. A warning or advisory can support a timely response, but the system’s capabilities and limits depend on its domain, design and operating context. For example, the FAA describes TCAS I advisories in relation to transponder-equipped aircraft, while its ACAS guidance notes that requirements differ by operation, aircraft and airspace. Maritime COLREG, meanwhile, addresses operator conduct rather than promising that equipment will avert every collision.
To understand a particular system, identify what hazards it is designed to detect, whether it warns or recommends a maneuver, what traffic or communications it depends on, and which operating rules apply. Those details—not the generic label—determine what the system can and cannot do.
