Choose a tech fest for breadth; choose a hackathon for a focused build. A college tech fest usually combines panels, workshops, showcases, competitions and social opportunities across several days. A hackathon concentrates teams on solving a defined problem and producing a working prototype or other submission before a fixed deadline.

Neither format is universally better. Your best choice depends on whether you want to explore several areas, learn from speakers and projects, or spend an intense block of time building with a team. The formats can also overlap: a hackathon may be one event inside a larger technology festival.

Tech fest or hackathon: the quick decision

If your main goal is… Start with… Why
Explore multiple technology topics Tech fest You can move among workshops, panels, competitions and showcases instead of committing to one project.
Build a prototype under pressure Hackathon The format gives you a problem, a deadline, a team structure and a required demonstration or submission.
Meet a broad campus and industry community Tech fest A multi-event program attracts different kinds of students, speakers and exhibitors.
Practice intensive collaboration Hackathon You work closely with teammates through ideation, implementation, testing and presentation.
Do both A festival that includes a hackathon Some festivals place a build challenge alongside their other activities.

Use this table as a starting point, then read the organizer’s current rules. Duration, eligibility, team size, judging, equipment and deliverables are event-specific.

What a college tech fest includes

A broad program rather than one challenge

A tech fest is generally a collection of activities under one event identity. The University of Technology Sydney describes its Tech Festival as a week-long program for students, industry and the wider technology community. Its listed activities include industry panels, competitions, project showcases, hackathons and interactive workshops. That is a representative example of breadth, not a fixed definition for every college festival.

Why students choose this format

  • Sampling: You can attend a workshop in one area, watch a project showcase in another and still join a competition or panel.
  • Low-commitment exploration: You can investigate fields before choosing a longer course, club project or competition.
  • Different ways to participate: A visitor may learn from a talk, contribute to a contest, demonstrate a project or simply meet other participants.
  • Community access: A broad schedule can bring together students, faculty, industry guests and visitors who would not attend the same single challenge.

A festival is the better fit when your question is, “What areas of technology should I learn more about?” It is less suitable if you specifically need uninterrupted time to finish one working product.

What a hackathon includes

A time-boxed build challenge

Hack Arizona defines a hackathon as “A hackathon is a time-bound event that offers participants an opportunity to work together in teams to develop solutions to a specific problem.” The essential elements are a defined problem or theme, a fixed working period, collaboration and a deliverable that can be reviewed.

Typical work and submissions

Organizers may publish problem statements, provide mentors, check progress and require a final presentation. Chanakya University’s Srujana 2026 describes its hackathon as a 48-hour development challenge for teams of two to four. Teams receive problem statements, are reviewed at intervals, and must provide a one-minute working demo, project code and documentation. Those requirements illustrate how a hackathon turns an idea into evidence that judges can inspect.

The word “hack” here means rapid, experimental building; it does not imply unauthorized access. A team might create software, hardware, a data tool, a service prototype or another solution allowed by the event rules.

What the experience feels like

You will usually spend most of the event with a small team: clarifying the problem, selecting a feasible scope, dividing work, integrating components, testing and preparing a demonstration. The deadline forces trade-offs. A small feature that works reliably is generally more useful for judging than a large feature set that cannot be shown.

Where the formats overlap

The choice is not always either-or. Srujana 2026 is a three-day festival listing eight events, one of which is its 48-hour hackathon. UTS also lists hackathons among its wider Tech Festival activities. In this arrangement, the festival supplies the broad community and schedule, while the hackathon supplies an intensive track for participants who want to build.

When a festival contains a hackathon, check whether registration is separate, whether the hackathon consumes the entire festival schedule, and whether you can attend other sessions without missing required checkpoints. A “festival pass” does not automatically grant entry to every limited-capacity activity.

Comparison by the decisions that matter

Decision point Tech fest Hackathon
Primary purpose Expose participants to several technology activities and communities. Develop a solution to a specific problem during a fixed period.
Schedule Often spread across several days; UTS gives a week-long example. Usually continuous or tightly scheduled; documented examples run 24, 36 or 48 hours.
Participation Often possible to attend selected sessions without joining a team. Normally requires joining or forming a team and meeting submission checkpoints.
Output May be attendance, learning, a competition entry, a showcase or networking; the organizer decides. Usually a prototype or working demo plus a presentation, code or documentation.
Team size Not a universal requirement; each activity can set its own rule. Organizer-specific. Srujana 2026 specifies teams of two to four.
Judging Only particular contests or showcases may be judged. Usually central to the event. CONVOKE 8.0 lists innovation and creativity, technical complexity, impact and feasibility, and presentation and demo.
Equipment Session-specific; check activity instructions. Bring the equipment the rules require. CONVOKE tells participants to bring their own laptops.
Benefits Broader exposure and more ways to meet people. Concentrated practice in collaboration, delivery and presenting a build.

The durations in the table are examples from named events, not industry standards. An organizer may choose a shorter or longer schedule.

Choose a tech fest when exploration is your priority

You are still deciding what to learn

A multi-track program lets you compare subjects directly. Attend a workshop to test a tool, a panel to hear how a field is used, and a showcase to see what students have made. This is more efficient than committing your entire weekend to a project before you know whether the topic interests you.

You want varied social contact

Because festivals combine different activities, you can meet participants with different skill levels and interests. Industry panels and showcases may also provide context that a single build challenge does not. Treat advertised guests as a feature of that event, not a guaranteed outcome of every tech fest.

You have limited uninterrupted time

If classes, work or travel prevent a continuous build session, a festival may let you attend selected blocks. Verify attendance requirements: some workshops, contests or competitions still require advance registration and fixed times.

Choose a hackathon when making and shipping is your priority

You want a concrete artifact

A hackathon gives you a reason to leave with something demonstrable: a prototype, a working feature, a testable concept or another permitted deliverable. The exact submission may include source code, documentation, slides or a short video, so read the rules before you design the project.

You learn best through a deadline

The time box creates a natural sequence: understand the prompt, define a minimum viable scope, build, test and present. If you prefer open-ended exploration with no submission pressure, a festival workshop or showcase may be more comfortable.

You want concentrated team practice

Hackathons make collaboration unavoidable. You must assign work, communicate interfaces, resolve disagreements and merge contributions quickly. Select teammates whose availability matches the full event window; a missing member can block integration even when the individual work is strong.

Chanakya University Srujana 2026

Srujana 2026 is listed as a three-day festival with eight events, including a hackathon. The hackathon is described separately as a 48-hour challenge for teams of two to four. Organizers set problem statements, review work at intervals, and ask for a one-minute working demo, code and documentation. This example shows why a festival timetable and a hackathon timetable may have different commitments.

CONVOKE 8.0 at the University of Delhi’s Cluster Innovation Centre

CONVOKE describes a 24-hour hackathon and reports more than 5,000 participants and more than 50 events over seven seasons. Those participation figures are claims about that event series, not an average for college hackathons. Its judging categories include innovation and creativity, technical complexity, impact and feasibility, and presentation and demo. The event page also instructs participants to bring their own laptops.

Caltech Hacktech

Caltech’s Hacktech FAQ describes a 36-hour product-building event; the FAQ was last updated in 2025. It places the build in a context that includes speakers and recruiters. Their presence is a feature of that particular event, not a promise that every hackathon offers recruiting access.

How to compare two events before registering

  1. Write your goal in one sentence. For example: “I want to explore robotics workshops,” or “I want to finish a demonstrable accessibility prototype with two teammates.”
  2. Map the schedule. Record the start and end time, mandatory check-ins, judging period and final presentation. A 24-hour, 36-hour or 48-hour label does not tell you whether setup or orientation occurs outside that window.
  3. Check eligibility. Confirm student status, year, institution, location, age limits and any required skills. Do not assume that a festival’s eligibility applies to its embedded hackathon.
  4. Confirm team rules. Note whether solo entry is allowed, the minimum and maximum team size, and the deadline for adding members. Srujana’s stated range is two to four; another organizer may use a different range.
  5. List every deliverable. Look for a problem statement, code repository, documentation, slide deck, video, demo length and submission format. A one-minute demo requirement leaves little room for an unfocused presentation.
  6. Read the judging rubric. If the event uses categories such as innovation, technical complexity, impact, feasibility and presentation, allocate preparation time to each rather than optimizing only for features.
  7. Check practical requirements. Confirm venue access, internet, power, software accounts, identification and whether you must bring a laptop or other equipment.
  8. Verify the current organizer page. Dates, registration status, hardware rules, prizes, speakers and judging can change. Treat the latest official page as authoritative for the event you will attend.

Preparation checklists

For a tech fest

  • Mark the sessions that directly support your goal and note overlapping times.
  • Register separately for workshops, contests or limited-capacity activities when required.
  • Prepare a short introduction and two specific questions for speakers or exhibitors.
  • Bring a charged phone, identification, any required access pass and a way to record useful links or notes.
  • Review the venue map and travel plan so you do not lose a full session moving between locations.

For a hackathon

  • Confirm the theme, allowed technologies, submission deadline and judging rubric.
  • Agree on roles, communication channels and a decision rule before building.
  • Bring a reliable laptop if the organizer requires personal equipment, as CONVOKE does.
  • Install and test your development tools, dependencies and accounts before arrival.
  • Define a minimum viable demo that can work even if optional features are cut.
  • Prepare a backup plan for connectivity, power, data and version control.
  • Rehearse the final demonstration within the exact time limit.

No source establishes a universal laptop specification. Choose equipment that meets the organizer’s software and power requirements, and verify those requirements on the event page.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every hackathon lasts a weekend

Documented examples include CONVOKE’s 24 hours, Hacktech’s 36 hours and Srujana’s 48 hours. A different event may be shorter, longer or divided into stages. Plan from the published timetable rather than from the word “hackathon.”

Confusing a festival pass with hackathon entry

A hackathon inside a festival can have its own capacity, team registration and submission rules. Confirm both registrations and attend mandatory briefings.

Building too much

When judging includes feasibility and a live demo, an integrated core flow is safer than a long list of unfinished features. Freeze scope early enough to test and document the result.

Ignoring the presentation

Technical work still has to be explained. If presentation and demo are scored, show the problem, your approach, a working path and the evidence that it functions. Keep the demonstration aligned with the submitted code and documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting guaranteed prizes or jobs

Organizers may advertise prizes, speakers, recruiters or other opportunities, but these are event-specific. Neither format universally guarantees a prize, internship, recruiter conversation or particular learning outcome.

A simple decision framework

Score each event from 1 (poor fit) to 5 (excellent fit) against the factors below, then give the highest weight to your actual goal.

Factor Question Usually favors
Exploration Will I learn about several fields or activities? Tech fest
Build intensity Will I have protected time to make one thing? Hackathon
Schedule flexibility Can I attend only the sessions I need? Tech fest
Team commitment Can I and my teammates stay engaged for the whole challenge? Hackathon only if yes
Deliverable clarity Do I want a judged prototype or submission? Hackathon
Community breadth Do I want many kinds of participants and sessions? Tech fest
Practical fit Can I meet the equipment, eligibility and travel requirements? Whichever event scores higher

If the scores are close, choose the event whose mandatory commitments you can meet comfortably. A theoretically ideal event is a poor choice if you cannot attend its required checkpoints or submit on time.

Bottom line: match the format to the outcome

Pick a tech fest when you want variety, workshops, showcases, panels or broad community contact. Pick a hackathon when you want an intensive, collaborative build with a deadline and a demonstrable submission. Before registering, compare the current organizer page for schedule, eligibility, team rules, deliverables, judging and equipment. And if a festival includes a hackathon, you may be able to get both exploration and focused building in one event—provided you can meet the hackathon’s separate commitments.
