Influencer campaigns fail for predictable reasons: the wrong creator, unclear deliverables, weak tracking, missing disclosures, or content that cannot legally support its claims. A successful collaboration is less about finding the account with the largest following and more about building a documented workflow from creator selection through post-publication review.
These 11 steps cover the practical process for collaborating with influencers on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and similar platforms in 2025–2026. The disclosure guidance is based on the FTC’s Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers and its Endorsement Guides FAQ. Platform menus can change, so check the creator’s current app version before publishing.
1. Decide what the collaboration must achieve
Start with a business outcome, not a follower target. “Work with influencers” is not a usable campaign objective. Choose one primary result and define how it will be measured.
| Objective | Useful measures | Suitable deliverable |
|---|---|---|
| Reach | Unique reach, impressions, video views | Short-form video or broad-reach post |
| Traffic | Link clicks, landing-page sessions, click-through rate | Story link, profile link, or tracked video CTA |
| Sales | Purchases, revenue, conversion rate, cost per acquisition | Tracked URL, affiliate link, or creator-specific code |
| Product education | Completion rate, saves, comments, support-question reduction | Tutorial, demonstration, or review |
| Reusable creative | Approved assets, watch time, paid-ad performance | Usage-rights package for ads and product pages |
Set a baseline before the campaign starts. For example: “Generate 500 landing-page visits from three TikTok videos at a cost per visit below $1.50.” That gives you something more useful than “get good engagement.”

2. Find creators whose audience fits the product
Evaluate audience relevance before reach. A creator with 18,000 followers who regularly explains home networking may be more useful for a router campaign than a general technology account with 400,000 followers.
Review at least the creator’s last 15–20 posts. Look for:
- Audience location, language, age, and likely purchasing power.
- Average views and meaningful comments, not just the displayed follower count.
- Whether the creator’s normal presentation style suits the product.
- Previous sponsorships and whether commercial posts received reasonable engagement.
- Signs of artificial activity, such as repetitive comments, sudden unexplained spikes, or an unusually high follower-to-view ratio.
- Past claims that could create brand-safety or credibility problems.
Ask for a current media kit and platform analytics before agreeing to performance targets. Never assume that a public follower count tells you where the audience lives or whether it can buy the product.
3. Check whether the relationship creates a material connection
A disclosure is generally required when the creator has a financial, employment, personal, or family relationship with the brand. Financial relationships include more than a cash fee:

- Free or discounted products.
- Affiliate benefits.
- Travel, event access, services, gifts, or other perks.
Free product is not automatically outside the rules simply because no money changed hands. If a sponsoring advertiser supplied the product or benefit with an expectation of promotion or discussion, the relationship should be disclosed. By contrast, an ordinary consumer sample program does not automatically create an FTC-covered endorsement when it is not supplied by or on behalf of a sponsoring advertiser with that expectation.
Record the arrangement in the campaign brief and contract. State exactly what the creator receives, what content is expected, and which posts or videos require disclosure.
4. Agree on deliverables, approval, and usage rights
A collaboration should not rely on informal messages such as “Can you post something next week?” Put the operational details in writing.

| Contract item | What to specify |
|---|---|
| Deliverables | Number of posts, Stories, videos, livestream mentions, links, and deadlines |
| Creative brief | Required product facts, prohibited claims, target audience, CTA, and tone |
| Approval | Whether the brand reviews drafts, response time, revision limit, and approval contact |
| Usage rights | Platforms, territory, duration, paid-ad use, editing rights, and whitelisting or Spark Ad permissions |
| Tracking | UTM URL, affiliate link, promo code, reporting dates, and attribution method |
| Payment | Fee, commission, expenses, invoice requirements, and payment schedule |
| Compliance | Required disclosure wording, platform labels, substantiation rules, and correction procedure |
Do not promise unlimited reuse because the creator’s content is already public. Organic publication, paid advertising, website use, retailer use, and editing are separate rights in many agreements.

5. Write a brief that preserves the creator’s voice
Give the creator a clear outcome and accurate product information, but do not script a personal experience they have not had. A useful brief includes:
- The audience problem the product solves.
- Three or four verified product facts.
- What the creator must demonstrate or explain.
- The required call to action and tracked destination.
- Claims they must not make.
- Disclosure wording and placement.
- Technical specifications such as aspect ratio, duration, captions, and delivery format.
Brands may provide pre-written copy or standard images to several influencers. The problem is not using shared material; the problem is making the post falsely suggest that each creator used the product or had an experience they did not have.
6. Make the disclosure clear in every applicable post
Do not assume followers already know about the relationship. Each individual advertisement should contain its own disclosure, even when the creator has worked with the brand repeatedly. Non-followers also matter when the post is publicly discoverable.
Use plain language such as “Ad,” “Advertisement,” “Sponsored by Acme,” or “Thanks to Acme for the free product.” Avoid vague terms such as #collab, sp, spon, “ambassador,” or a stand-alone “thanks.” The disclosure should use the same language as the endorsement so the audience does not have to interpret it.
Placement matters:
- Instagram: Put “Ad” or “Sponsored” near the beginning of the caption. Text hidden after the first two or three lines behind More may be missed. If the image itself is the endorsement, add the disclosure to the image as well.
- Stories: Superimpose the disclosure on the image or video and leave it visible long enough to be read.
- Video: Put the disclosure in the video, not only in the description. If the endorsement is both visual and spoken, make the disclosure both visible and audible.
- Live streams: Repeat the disclosure periodically because viewers can join after the opening.
- YouTube: Include a clear spoken or on-screen disclosure in the video when the video contains the endorsement; a description-only disclosure can be missed.
Do not hide the disclosure in a block of hashtags, behind a link, or behind a button labelled “Disclosure” or “Legal.”
7. Use platform tools as an extra layer, not a replacement
Instagram’s paid partnership tag and TikTok’s commercial-content setting help identify sponsored content, but the FTC advises not assuming a platform tool alone is sufficient. Keep a plain-language disclosure in the content when one is required.
A unique discount code can help track sales, but it does not always clearly communicate that the creator receives a commission. Add an explicit statement such as “I earn a commission from purchases through this link” when that relationship may not be obvious.
8. Set TikTok’s commercial disclosure before publishing
For a standard TikTok post, the current app path is:

Create a post → Content disclosure and ads → Disclose commercial content → Your brand or Branded content → Save → Continue → Post
For an account that is not participating in TikTok One, the setting may begin here:
Create a post → More options → Content disclosure and ads
When Branded content is selected, TikTok can show the Brand partnership option for tagging a brand partner. TikTok uses slightly different wording in different interfaces: browser uploads may show Show more → Disclose post content, while other documentation calls the setting Disclose commercial content.
Choose the correct category:
- Promotional content: Promotes the creator’s own brand or business.
- Paid partnership: Promotes another business or brand.
TikTok considers factors such as financial incentives, brand mentions, hashtags, account tags, logos, product demonstrations, tutorials, and calls to action such as “buy now” or “shop today.” Turning on the disclosure and using the Paid partnership label does not, according to TikTok, reduce recommendation distribution. Improperly disclosed commercial content may instead become ineligible for the For You feed.
9. Know TikTok’s paths for existing posts, LIVE, and browser uploads
Creators sometimes remember the disclosure only after publishing. TikTok’s current paths are:

TikTok One projects automatically turn on Commercial Content Disclosure according to TikTok’s documentation. A creator should still check the final preview and contract requirements rather than assuming an automated setting covers every platform or legal obligation.
10. Configure TikTok brand-partner authorization deliberately
Tagging a brand partner does more than display a label. It can make the content discoverable to the brand in Content Suite, provide asset-level post-insight analytics, and support activation as a Spark Ad.

TikTok states that the ads-authorization period is 60 days by default when a creator tags a brand partner. TikTok also describes anchor authorization, which can allow a brand to add applicable links to the video for a campaign. Confirm who may use the content, for how long, and whether paid promotion is included in the agreement.

Review the final content before it goes live and again after publication. A creator cannot claim personal experience with a product they have not tried, say a product was excellent when they believed it was terrible, or make an unsupported claim such as saying a product treats a health condition.
Best Value
Create a simple campaign review checklist:
- Is the correct product and offer shown?
- Are prices, features, availability, and performance claims current?
- Is the disclosure visible in the content itself?
- Does the spoken wording match the on-screen wording?
- Does the tracked link work on mobile?
- Are comments revealing a material correction or misleading claim?
- Has the creator supplied screenshots or platform analytics by the agreed reporting date?
Save the URL, publication time, disclosure screenshot, reach, views, watch time, clicks, conversions, spend, and any paid-media results. Compare creators using the same definitions; “views” and “reach” are not interchangeable.
On TikTok, a published disclosure selection cannot be changed. If the wrong selection was used, TikTok instructs the creator to remove the post or LIVE and create a new one with the correct selection. Build this possibility into the correction procedure instead of silently editing around the error.

FAQ
Do influencers have to disclose free products?
Usually, when the product or perk came from a sponsoring advertiser with an expectation of promotion or discussion. Free product is not exempt merely because the brand did not pay cash or explicitly demand a post. An ordinary consumer sample program does not automatically create an FTC-covered endorsement when there is no sponsoring advertiser relationship or promotional expectation.
Is TikTok’s Paid partnership label enough by itself?
Do not rely on it as the only disclosure. TikTok’s label is useful, but the FTC advises using a clear, conspicuous disclosure in the content itself when a material connection exists.
Can an influencer disclose a sponsorship only in the caption or YouTube description?
That can be inadequate for a video endorsement because viewers may not read the description. Put the disclosure in the video, preferably both visually and audibly when the endorsement is communicated in both ways.
Does adding a TikTok commercial disclosure reduce reach?
TikTok states that turning on the disclosure and labelling a post Paid partnership does not affect recommendation distribution. Improperly disclosed commercial content may be ineligible for the For You feed.
Can a TikTok disclosure be changed after a post is published?
TikTok’s current support instructions say the published label cannot be changed. If the wrong selection was used, remove the post or LIVE and create it again with the correct disclosure type.
What should an influencer say when using an affiliate link?
Use clear wording that explains both the relationship and the benefit, such as “I earn a commission from purchases through this link.” A discount code alone may not make the commission arrangement clear.
The Bottom Line
Influencer collaboration works best as a controlled publishing process: select for audience fit, document the deal, brief the creator with truthful claims, disclose the relationship in the content, configure the platform tools, and measure the result with tracked links or codes. Treat every post as something a non-follower may see without context. That standard prevents the most common compliance and campaign-measurement failures before they become expensive to fix.
