A “cold wallet” can reduce the chance that an online computer exposes the signing secret, but the label does not prove that a device is secure. Security depends on the whole system: how the device creates and protects keys, what it shows before signing, how it receives data and updates, and whether its recovery backup stays safe and usable.

This comparison is dated October 11, 2026. The available source material names 13 models but does not establish current generations or firmware versions for each. It therefore supports a framework for assessing their makers’ claims—not a current, independently tested product ranking.

What “cold wallet” means in this comparison

Here, a cold wallet means a physical hardware signer that protects signing secrets while an online phone or computer prepares or relays transaction data. It is distinct from a paper backup and from an offline computer, each of which has different security and usability trade-offs.

The 13 models named in the available comparison are COLDCARD Q, Mk5, Mk4, and Mk3; Ledger Nano X; Trezor Model T; BitBox02; Bitkey; and Tangem. The SafePal source discusses the S1, S1 Pro, and X1, bringing the total to 13. These are not necessarily all current models, and the evidence does not identify the exact hardware revisions or firmware versions evaluated. Product features can vary by model and software release.

The COLDCARD comparison is written by a wallet maker with a commercial interest. Its feature matrix can point readers toward claims to check, but it is not an independent market ranking or a comparable security test. The points below distinguish published design claims from what those claims can establish.

What to check before trusting a transaction

A compromised host may display a recipient or amount different from the transaction it sends to the signer. The device’s own display and controls are therefore central: the user needs to verify relevant details on the signer itself, not merely approve a prompt on the phone or computer.

  • Recipient and amount: Check whether the device displays the destination and value in a form you can inspect before approval. Do not assume every model or transaction type exposes the same details.
  • Complex transactions: Smart-contract interactions and other complex transactions may contain information that is not easy to interpret on a small screen. Some workflows may require blind signing, where the signer cannot present all transaction meaning in a readily verifiable form.
  • Approval controls: A trusted display is useful only if the signer’s inputs let you make an informed choice and the details shown correspond to what will be signed.

Ledger Donjon describes its secure-display objective this way: “Hardware wallets are precisely designed to prevent these threats, ensuring secure display and secure inputs for verifying and granting transactions.” That is Ledger’s stated design purpose, not independent proof that every Ledger device—or any other maker’s device—achieves it in every supported workflow. See Ledger Donjon’s threat-model description and its explanation of why a secure screen matters.

What a secure element does—and does not prove

A secure element is a component intended to protect particular data or operations against defined attacks. Its presence alone does not establish that the full wallet is secure. The relevant questions include what secrets it protects, how the rest of the device interacts with it, whether transaction details reach a trustworthy display, and what physical access or attacker capability the design assumes.

Manufacturers describe different roles for their components. Ledger publishes a vendor threat model and seed-handling account; Trezor says a secure element participates in randomness generation on certain supported devices; BitBox describes a secure chip that hardens the user-selected device password and also states limits if the device and password or backup are compromised. These are product-specific design claims, not a shared test or a blanket guarantee. Read the claims in their stated model scope: Ledger’s threat model, Ledger’s seed confidentiality explanation, Trezor’s secure-element explanation, and BitBox’s threat model.

Physical protections also need a threat model. PIN attempt limits, tamper responses, fault-injection resistance, and side-channel protections address different attack paths. A claim about a defense is meaningful only alongside the assumed attacker’s skills, equipment, and access. A 2021 academic paper reported a proof-of-concept attack on selected hardware wallets; it is evidence about the devices and conditions studied at that time, not a finding about every current model. The paper’s scope and findings should not be generalized beyond that study.

Air-gapped operation changes the channel, not the whole risk

An air-gapped design avoids or limits a direct connection such as USB or Bluetooth by transferring transaction data through another channel, for example QR codes or removable media. That can reduce exposure to some communication paths, but it does not by itself establish that firmware is trustworthy, that the signer displays the transaction accurately, or that the user understands what they approve.

SafePal’s white paper describes connectivity differences among the S1, S1 Pro, and X1. Those distinctions should not be applied to all SafePal devices as one feature set, nor treated as independent validation of the company’s security claims. SafePal’s white paper is the maker’s account. For any model, assess the actual data-transfer method, what transaction details appear on the device, and whether the workflow asks for blind signing.

Open source, firmware updates, and authenticity checks

“Open source” and “signed updates” describe separate properties. Source availability can make code inspectable, but it does not establish that every component is open, that anyone has reviewed the code, or that a particular installed build matches the reviewed source. Update authentication can help ensure an update is authorized, but it does not by itself prove the update is bug-free or that the update process is free of risk.

Foundation’s Passport security file describes signed firmware updates and places responsibility for retaining the seed or a microSD backup on the user. Those details should be scoped to the Passport device and the firmware described in that file; they are not a general statement about all hardware signers. Foundation’s security documentation explains its approach.

Device authenticity checks can help detect some counterfeit or unauthorized-device conditions. They cannot prove an unbroken supply chain or detect every possible physical modification. Treat an authenticity check as one useful signal, not a certificate that all components and handling are trustworthy.

Recovery can bypass device protections—or fail when you need it

A signer may protect a key well while it is in the device, yet a lost or damaged device can still leave its owner unable to recover funds if the backup is missing, damaged, or incompatible. Conversely, anyone who obtains a usable recovery backup may be able to access funds without defeating the hardware device’s protections.

  • Identify the recovery method: Determine whether the wallet relies on a standard seed phrase or another backup mechanism. Do not assume every recovery scheme uses a seed phrase.
  • Check restoration compatibility: Understand which devices or wallet software can restore the backup, and follow the maker’s current recovery instructions for the relevant model.
  • Plan for loss and exposure: Store recovery material so it can survive likely hazards while remaining inaccessible to others. A backup that is convenient to find may also be easier to steal.
  • Separate device security from backup security: A PIN or secure element does not protect a backup stored where another person can read or copy it.

Ledger describes seed generation and storage as part of its own threat model; Trezor explains recovery using a wallet backup for the supported devices. These maker explanations do not establish compatibility across all models. See Ledger’s seed security page and Trezor’s explanation of secure elements and wallet backup.

How to compare the 13 models without inventing a winner

The cited material does not provide comparable independent measurements across all 13 named devices, nor enough current generation and firmware detail to support a “most secure” score. Instead, evaluate each exact model against the same questions and record which statements come from the maker, an independent review, or a study of a particular device and period.

Assessment area Questions to answer for the exact model
Transaction verification What recipient, amount, and other relevant details does the signer display? How are complex transactions handled, and can the workflow require blind signing?
Secret generation and storage What entropy sources and seed-handling process does the maker state? Where does seed material reside, and what independent evidence supports the claims?
Physical attack protections What do PIN limits, secure components, or tamper responses protect against? What attacker skill, equipment, and access does the threat model assume?
Firmware and transparency Which code is available for inspection, which components remain closed, how are updates authenticated, and how does the maker handle vulnerabilities?
Genuineness and supply chain What device verification process is offered, and what kinds of counterfeiting or modification can it not rule out?
Recovery What backup is used, what can restore it, and how could the backup itself be lost, stolen, or exposed?
Connectivity Does the model use USB, Bluetooth, NFC, QR, or removable media? Which communication risk does that choice reduce, and which transaction-verification or firmware risks remain?

For every answer, note the model and firmware version, the date of the supporting documentation, and whether the evidence is a maker’s statement, independent assessment, academic result, or hands-on observation. Without that discipline, a comparison can accidentally present a selective feature list as a security verdict.
