A coherent perfect absorber (CPA) is a lossy system that absorbs a specially tuned incoming wave completely, leaving no reflected or transmitted wave in the matched mode. It works only when the light’s frequency, amplitudes, phases, and spatial pattern match the absorber’s loss and coupling conditions.
What is a coherent perfect absorber?
A coherent perfect absorber is a system that completely absorbs a particular coherent electromagnetic input mode. “Coherent” means the incoming waves maintain a defined relationship in phase; “perfect” describes the ideal result for the matched input: no outgoing light in the relevant channels.
In scattering-matrix terms, the input field is an eigenmode associated with a zero eigenvalue. The structure’s response sends none of that matching input back out as reflected or transmitted radiation. This does not mean the material absorbs every beam that reaches it: a different frequency, phase relationship, amplitude balance, or spatial mode may produce ordinary reflection or transmission instead.

CPA combines material loss with interference. The absorber dissipates electromagnetic energy, while carefully arranged incoming waves interfere so that the outgoing fields cancel. The required input is not just “more light”; it is a particular field pattern matched to the structure.

The original 2010 paper by Y. D. Chong, Li Ge, Hui Cao, and A. D. Stone describes the phenomenon as arising from “the interaction of optical absorption and wave interference” and explains it in terms of moving a zero of the elastic scattering matrix onto the real wave-vector axis. Why is it called a time-reversed laser?
At laser threshold, a gain medium supports a mode that emits an outgoing wave. In the idealized time-reversal analogy, replace gain with the corresponding loss and send the reversed field pattern inward. Under the matching conditions, the incoming wave is absorbed instead of emerging as laser output.

This is a description of the relationship between the modes, not an ordinary laser literally operated backward. The phase, amplitude, frequency, and spatial shape of the incoming field must match the relevant mode; arbitrary illumination of the same object will not necessarily be absorbed perfectly.

- Frequency or wavelength: the loss and scattering response must meet the CPA condition at the operating frequency. The foundational account describes perfect absorption at discrete frequencies, not automatic absorption across a broad spectrum.
- Loss and coupling: dissipation must be appropriate for the structure and for how it couples to the incoming channels.
- Input channels: the number and geometry of incident waves must suit the implementation. Some demonstrations use two-sided illumination; more complex structures may require more elaborate spatial modes.
- Amplitude and relative phase: the incoming waves must reproduce the matching field. Phase errors can spoil cancellation and prevent perfect absorption.
- Spatial wavefront: for a complicated photonic structure, producing the exact required field pattern can be experimentally challenging.
These requirements explain why “perfect” is conditional: it applies to a selected input mode at a selected operating condition, rather than to every beam or frequency. The foundational 2010 paper analyzed coherent perfect absorption in a silicon slab, reporting the effect over an illumination range of 500–900 nm. That range is the paper’s reported experimental wavelength range, not a universal operating band for CPAs. Yale’s research-group overview describes a subsequent two-port demonstration using a silicon wafer and notes the importance of controlling the relative phase of the inputs. See Yale’s CPA overview.

Researchers have explored or proposed several application directions. The original paper identifies detectors, transducers, and switches as possible uses. A 2017 review surveys a range of CPA architectures and discusses potential nanophotonic applications, while a 2012 paper investigates coherent absorption for coupling light into surface plasmons and possible sensing applications. These are research prospects and investigated concepts; they do not establish that each application is a mature commercial device.
