Sometimes using a coding agent can feel like playing a slot machine: send a prompt, wait, and hope the next answer produces a breakthrough. Rootly co-founder and CTO Quentin Rousseau described the experience this way: “They operate like slot machines. You hit one prompt, you get an answer, you get some coding done.” That is a vivid account of uncertain, rewarding iterations—not evidence that coding agents cause gambling addiction.

Why the comparison can feel familiar

An agent’s next response is uncertain. It might solve the task, make partial progress, or introduce a problem that needs more work. When a useful result arrives after several attempts, the cycle of prompting and waiting can feel rewarding. That resemblance helps explain the metaphor, but it does not make coding-agent use equivalent to gambling.

Reporting by Axios on April 4, 2026, collected individual accounts of intense agent use, disrupted sleep, context switching, and difficulty disengaging. Those are interview reports, not prevalence estimates. Simon Willison said, “There is a limit on human cognition, in how much you can hold in your head at one time. And it’s very easy to pop that stack at the moment.” Tim Dettmers described the tension between agents expanding what feels possible and amplifying demands on focus and mental bandwidth. The report also noted that deadline-driven intensity and all-nighters existed before coding agents.

What slot-machine research does—and doesn’t—tell us

A peer-reviewed fMRI study examined healthy participants playing a simplified, simulated slot-machine game. After one session, researchers observed reduced response signals in reinforcement-related brain regions after wins and increased anticipatory signals while the reels spun. The findings help explain why anticipation and uncertain outcomes matter in that gambling context; the study did not examine AI tools, software developers, or coding-agent use.

The experimental game also differed from commercial slot machines: it used comparable rates of wins and near-misses, constrained near-miss patterns, different prize structures, variable-ratio outcomes, and longer, jittered reel spins. It should not be treated as an exact model of real gambling, much less as evidence of a shared neurological effect from prompting an agent. The study is “Shifts in reinforcement signalling while playing slot-machines as a function of prior experience and impulsivity.”

What the evidence says about agent use

The available evidence does not establish that coding agents trigger the same reinforcement patterns as slot machines or cause gambling-like addiction. Anecdotes can identify experiences worth considering, but they cannot show how common those experiences are or establish their cause.

Productivity claims need context

Anthropic’s May 27, 2026 post reported a survey of 1,260 quantitative social scientists fielded in February and March 2026. Respondents were recruited through an offer of Claude Max access, so the survey was not representative and may overrepresent people already interested in AI. Twenty percent said they used coding agents. That figure describes this survey’s respondents, not software developers generally.

In the survey, coding-agent users reported starting more projects and posting more working papers. Those comparisons were descriptive and may reflect self-selection; they do not establish that agents caused the difference. The survey found no evidence that users submitted more new journal papers or resubmitted faster. Its ongoing randomized experiment had not yet been reported in the post. The findings offer context about productivity claims, not proof about developer burnout or agent-driven productivity.

Anthropic also reported that 97% of coding-agent users and 77% of other AI users in this social-science survey used AI to generate code for quantitative data analysis. These are not estimates for the developer population.

Measure the work, not the activity

Span analyzed agent trajectories from 103 engineering teams over 12 weeks, from May through July 2026. Its observational framework considered prompt clarity, environment readiness, and quality stewardship, and reported associations with token efficiency, autonomy, and review rework. Span said the relationships do not prove causality. In one reported association, a one-point increase in its quality-stewardship score corresponded to 39% fewer review cycles per 1,000 lines of AI-authored code merged; that is not evidence that raising the score would cause the reduction.

Google Research makes a complementary point: proactive agents should be evaluated by the quality of their “insight policy”—what they decide matters next, what evidence supports it, and how they adapt—not by activity alone. For an individual developer, that means counting prompts or tokens is a poor substitute for checking whether the work is useful and verified.

A practical check: is the session producing useful work?

Use these questions to distinguish purposeful iteration from a loop of trying again because the next answer might be better. They are practical checks, not a clinically validated test.

  • Outcome: Did the session produce accepted, useful code or a verified learning result?
  • Evidence: Did you check tests, outputs, and assumptions, or keep prompting because the result seemed close?
  • Task definition: Before the agent started, did you define the scope, constraints, and what “done” means?
  • Review cost: Did additional agent work reduce the review burden, or create more rework and more code to inspect?
  • Stopping rule: Is there a clear condition for stopping, escalating, or taking a break?
  • Understanding: Can you explain and maintain the change, and did the workflow leave you opportunities to learn?

Anthropic’s 2026 summary of a skill-formation study emphasizes intentional skill development and meaningful human oversight. It describes a relatively small sample and says immediate comprehension does not settle the question of longer-term skill development. Whether an agent’s contribution helps you learn is therefore worth checking, but the summary does not establish long-term effects.

When to pause and reset

If there is no defined success condition and each disappointing response triggers another prompt, pause before asking again. Rewrite the task with a specific scope and a way to verify the result, or stop and return later. If the agent has already produced code, inspect and test it before deciding whether another iteration is worthwhile. The goal is not to limit prompts for their own sake; it is to make each next step serve a clear purpose.
