A sandbox and a token grant solve different parts of a coding-agent evaluation: tokens pay for model usage, while a sandbox gives the agent a place to inspect code, run commands and produce a patch. A clean, repeatable runtime can make results easier to check—but the available evidence does not establish that free servers outperform token grants overall. The right choice depends on whether the bottleneck is execution, model usage, reliability, cost or data handling.
What a sandbox adds to an agent evaluation
A coding agent needs more than a prompt to fix a software issue. It needs access to the repository and a way to run relevant commands, such as tests. A sandbox can provide an isolated Unix-like environment with a filesystem, shell, installed packages, mounted data, exposed ports, snapshots and controlled access to external systems. Those are capabilities described in the OpenAI Agents SDK sandbox guide; they should not be taken as a guarantee that every hosted sandbox offers the same security or privacy protections.
Tokens fund inference—the model’s processing of prompts and responses. They do not provide a consistent place to run the code or check the result. If an evaluation cannot execute the agent’s patch against the intended tests, more tokens alone will not fix that measurement problem. Conversely, a working sandbox does not establish that the model can solve the task or that its run uses few tokens.
Why a reproducible runtime matters
A result is easier to interpret when runs start from the same repository state, use the same environment and are judged by the same tests. Otherwise, a difference in dependencies, setup or test execution can be mistaken for a difference in agent ability.

The OpenAI announcement of SWE-bench Verified describes a set of 500 samples screened by human annotators. The announcement, first published August 13, 2024 and updated February 24, 2025, explains that SWE-bench tasks give an agent a repository and an issue description, then assess a proposed patch with two kinds of tests:
FAIL_TO_PASStests should fail before the fix and pass after it.PASS_TO_PASStests should continue to pass, helping detect regressions.
OpenAI also says it worked with the SWE-bench authors on a containerized Docker harness to make evaluation easier and more reliable. That supports using controlled execution and objective tests; it is not evidence that a free server is superior to a token grant.

How to test a coding agent in a disposable sandbox
The article behind the “sandbox first” argument proposes a small trial: start with one known failing test, use a fresh disposable environment, and save an honest record of the run. It is a proposed approach, not a published, controlled test of sandbox services against token credits.

- Choose a task with a meaningful test. Use a repository and issue where a test fails before the intended fix. Identify regression tests that should remain green.
- Start from a clean environment. Provision a fresh sandbox and make the repository version, dependencies and setup consistent across runs.
- Run one agent task. Keep the model, prompt, task description and permitted tools the same when comparing runs.
- Capture the evidence. Save the patch, test output, elapsed time and token usage; record the relevant cost if known.
- Check the result, then tear down. Confirm that the patch applies, the intended failing test passes, and regression tests still pass. Reset or destroy the sandbox before another run.
A green test result is useful only if the test checks the intended behavior. A test that passes without detecting the original failure cannot establish that the agent fixed the issue.

What to compare before choosing between server access and credits
Compare options under the same model, task, repository version, harness and grading rules. Track the outcome as well as the resource consumed; a low token count is not a successful evaluation if the patch fails.
| Measure | What to record |
|---|---|
| Environment | Whether it starts cleanly, has the required dependencies and can be reset to a known state. |
| Task success | Whether the intended failure is fixed and the patch applies to the target repository. |
| Regressions | Whether the specified pass-to-pass tests remain passing. |
| Usage and cost | Tokens consumed and the resulting model-usage cost, using the same accounting basis for each run. |
| Time and availability | Elapsed time, startup delays, interruptions and whether the service was available for the whole trial. |
| Data handling and isolation | What data enters the environment, what network access is allowed, and whether the isolation fits the task’s requirements. |
This comparison is a practical recommendation, not a reported benchmark. A free tier may be useful for an initial trial, but “free” does not by itself establish dependable availability, low latency, sufficient isolation or lower total evaluation cost. A token grant may be more useful when a suitable runtime already exists and model usage is the constraint.

When a hosted sandbox may not fit
A hosted environment may be inappropriate when policy requires strict data residency, when sensitive source code cannot leave controlled infrastructure, or when the task depends on real production state that should not be copied into a disposable test environment. The original article frames its free server as an evaluation surface, not a deployment target. Keep evaluation data and credentials limited to what the task requires, and verify the provider’s isolation and data-handling terms rather than assuming all sandboxes behave alike.
What the “free servers beat token grants” claim establishes
The claim is best read as an argument about evaluation design, not a demonstrated product comparison. Harper Zhu’s article says, “The tokens were never the bottleneck; the missing reproducible runtime was,” and describes its workflow as “one failing test, one disposable sandbox, and one honest log file.” The article discloses that it was prepared as part of MonkeyCode’s product outreach, so its account is promotional and the quoted experience is the author’s assertion.

The cited evaluation and sandbox documentation show why a consistent execution environment and meaningful tests can improve the interpretability of coding-agent runs. They do not provide a controlled head-to-head result for free server access versus token grants. Whether one is better value for a particular team must be established using its own tasks, reliability requirements, model costs and data constraints.
