One parent Codex task on Windows ran for more than 31 hours, continued through application and computer restarts, and produced a versioned teaching package with checks intended to make its state inspectable. The account comes from kfinds, who describes it as a sanitized case study—not a benchmark or proof that long-running AI tasks are generally reliable.
What the task built
The output was a connected teaching-and-verification system, not just a textbook draft. Its parts were linked so that teaching materials, exercises, generated data, and checks could be traced against one another.
- Source/master, student, and teacher chapter variants.
- Conventional hand-work exercises alongside a separate AI-assisted exercise track.
- Worked answers arranged by difficulty.
- Five deterministic exercise and data generators.
- Reproducibility scripts, manifests, hashes, audit reports, and restart checkpoints.
The AI-assisted exercises asked learners to use an AI system to generate, inspect, test, or audit mathematical objects under explicit rules. The author retained authority over definitions, permitted transformations, research direction, and acceptance criteria; Codex handled much of the extended construction, implementation, checking, auditing, and documentation.

The GitHub discussion describes a dependency chain: theory source informed the student text, which informed the teacher text; manual exercises connected to AI-assisted exercises and then worked answers. Generators produced datasets and summaries that could be independently rerun and checked by hash. Execution records fed manifests, audits, and restart checkpoints.

This structure matters because a restart does not need to depend solely on a convincing recap of earlier conversation. A project can recover from explicit files, recorded outputs, and checks that show what exists and whether it still meets criteria. In this account, the author says resumption followed verified artifact state rather than a narrative guess about progress.
What the author measured—and what the numbers mean
According to kfinds’s recovered local execution records and artifact audits, the task lasted more than 31 hours. The same records are reported to include approximately 338.55 MiB of recovered local session log, 47 context-compression events, and 21,991 associated records. These are author-reported details from 2026, not independently measured benchmark results.

| Reported item | Figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Changed files and line changes | 512 files; +84,401 / -720 lines | One recorded UI checkpoint, not a claimed final total. |
| Experiment checks | 67/67 | Reported by the author from artifact audits. |
| Student–teacher cross-checks | 36/36 | Reported by the author from artifact audits. |
| Deterministic reruns | 100,000 and 250,000 events | Separate rerun scales reported by the author. |
| Additional validation | Five million rows | A separate validation, not the same as the event-count reruns. |
The author explicitly does not claim zero errors. The figures document what the author says was recovered and checked in this one workflow; they do not establish how another task, project, or machine would perform.
Why continuity was possible in this case
In the author’s account, the useful result was not simply that the process kept running. It was that the project had durable state and explicit ways to determine whether work was complete. The reported practices included:

- Version project state as artifacts rather than leaving essential progress only in chat.
- Set definitions and authority boundaries before execution, including what the system could change and what remained under the author’s control.
- Write acceptance criteria and invariants explicitly so completion could be checked.
- Turn qualitative requirements into executable checks in the generators.
- Check student and teacher outputs against each other rather than treating either as self-validating.
- Keep negative results and rejected paths, not only successful outputs.
- Resume from verified artifacts and checkpoints instead of relying on a reconstructed account of prior progress.
These are observations from one reported case, not a controlled comparison proving that this approach is best. OpenAI’s Goals guide describes a related planning concept: a durable objective can specify its outcome, verification surface, constraints, boundaries, iteration policy, and when to stop as blocked. That guidance is consistent with explicit acceptance criteria, but it does not verify how this particular Windows task survived restarts.
Local recovery is not the same as Codex Cloud recovery
The author describes a local Windows workflow, with local session data and produced artifacts recovered after restarts. OpenAI’s Codex Cloud help covers a different service: cloud tasks run on OpenAI-managed computers and may continue while a user’s computer is asleep. It says saved VM state has a default recovery window of up to seven days after the last turn start or task resume; that is a statement about saved VM state, not conversation-history retention. The cloud behavior should not be treated as an explanation for the local recovery described here.

OpenAI’s account of its internal Codex controls provides broader context for governance: sandbox boundaries determine where Codex can write and whether it can access the network, approval policy determines when it must ask, and agent-native telemetry can help people understand and audit actions. Those controls are useful concepts, but they are not evidence about the configuration or performance of kfinds’s specific task.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat the case does not establish
- It does not show that long-running agent tasks are generally reliable or error-free; the author expressly rejects a zero-errors claim.
- It does not provide independent replication of the reported duration, record counts, checks, or reruns.
- It does not expose the foundational research corpus or the complete internal research protocol. The public deposit is described as sanitized, timestamped execution evidence and Chapter 1 artifacts, not the full corpus or private chain-of-thought.
- It does not identify the computer hardware or Windows build, so it cannot support a hardware recommendation or repeatable setup recipe.
- It does not provide a measured ranking of workflows. The useful distinction is between conversational history and versioned project state, progress claims and rerunnable checks, and client-visible history and recoverable local artifacts.
The weak point: observability
The author identifies observability as the weakest product-level part of the experience. Very long histories were difficult to navigate and export as a single official report. After a restart, much of the client-visible history had disappeared even though local session data and produced artifacts were recoverable. The author argues that native exports of checkpoints, token composition, file manifests, and audit events would make long tasks easier to inspect.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
That limitation helps clarify the case’s central lesson: continuity and auditability are related but distinct. Artifacts can preserve useful project state after a restart, while an incomplete history view can still make it difficult to understand how the work unfolded. For a long task, a clear acceptance surface and durable files are practical safeguards; they do not replace better observability or independent validation.
