CodeGuard can back up websites hosted on VPS and dedicated servers, but the server-specific packages in its current offer are explicitly presented for HostGator customers. If your server is with another provider, confirm compatibility and pricing before choosing a package. The key checks are FTP or SFTP access for website files, supported database connectivity, enough storage for your backup history, and a restore method you can use.
What CodeGuard does for a VPS or dedicated server
CodeGuard describes its service as website and database backup and monitoring. On its HostGator VPS and dedicated server page, it says the service stores selected website content in encrypted storage, takes an initial backup, then performs daily monitoring and incremental website backups. Monitoring looks for files that are added, modified, or deleted. CodeGuard says it emails a ChangeAlert when it detects a website change. That is a change notification, not evidence that a site is malware-free or that a particular incident will be automatically repaired.
Check server and database connectivity first
For website files, CodeGuard’s FAQ specifies FTP or SFTP credentials. Its FAQ names WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, and Magento as compatible examples, while requiring FTP/SFTP access and supported database connectivity for applicable setups. A content-management system name alone does not establish that a particular server configuration will connect successfully. CodeGuard’s FAQ

For databases, the FAQ identifies MySQL or MS-SQL and says the database must be reachable by CodeGuard, including through IP allowlisting where required. The HostGator server page describes direct MySQL connection or an SSH tunnel. Check your host’s firewall and remote-database policies before purchase; some providers restrict remote database connections or require support to make network changes.
- Confirm you can create or supply the FTP/SFTP credentials needed for the website files.
- Identify the database type and confirm remote access or SSH tunneling is available for your server.
- Ask the host whether its firewall permits the required connection and whether it must allowlist vendor IP addresses. Because allowlists can change, use CodeGuard’s live documentation rather than relying on a copied address list.
- Confirm that the CodeGuard offer you are considering is available for your hosting provider and server tier.
How initial and daily backups work
Website files
CodeGuard says its initial website backup retrieves all selected file content over FTP or SFTP. For later backups, it examines file metadata and transfers new or changed files; deletions are recorded in its repository. This is a vendor description of the workflow, not a guarantee about how quickly every site will be backed up.

Databases
Database backups use a separate connection. CodeGuard says it compares the database with its recent stored version and replaces the stored version when it finds changes. Daily backups continue automatically unless settings are changed, according to the HostGator server page. Website and database coverage should therefore be checked separately during setup rather than assuming that a website-file connection automatically includes its database.

CodeGuard describes three website restore routes on the server-specific page:

- Download an archive: download a ZIP backup and restore the files manually.
- Restore selected files: choose individual files rather than replacing all website content.
- Request an automatic restore: ask CodeGuard to restore all content.
Its FAQ says it checks the live site and then pushes or pulls differences during restoration. The reviewed vendor materials do not establish an independently verified recovery time, recovery-point guarantee, or restore-success rate. If recovery is important to your operation, find out which restore route applies to your package and test your own recovery procedure before an emergency.

The page says these packages are billed monthly and include unlimited websites and databases, daily backup and monitoring, client access and reporting, and advanced security. Confirm the current package name, capacity, included features, and final charge with the seller before ordering; a listed storage ceiling should be compared with your expected backup footprint and retention needs.

The server-specific FAQ describes 90-day or entire-history retention options, while the general comparison presents a broader menu. Do not infer that every general-plan retention choice is included in a HostGator server package.

- Connectivity: Verify FTP/SFTP, database type, remote access or SSH tunneling, and firewall requirements.
- Coverage and capacity: Estimate the files and databases to protect, then compare that footprint and history with the package’s storage cap. Confirm what “unlimited” website or database counts mean in practice.
- Retention: Establish how long you need previous versions and which retention setting is actually available on the selected offer.
- Recovery: Decide whether manual archive download, individual-file recovery, or an automatic restore suits your operations, and document who can perform it.
- Monitoring and security: Confirm which change-alert and security features are included in the package. The page mentions optional two-factor authentication and login IP logging; do not assume an optional feature is enabled by default.
- Commercial terms: Confirm current price, billing, trial eligibility, renewal and cancellation terms, and availability through your host. CodeGuard’s FAQ states that current plans include a 14-day free trial, but that statement does not establish that the trial applies to the server-specific offer.
For hosting providers and resellers
CodeGuard advertises a partner offering for hosting providers, including cPanel integration and product and marketing support. Public materials reviewed do not establish commission rates, referral tracking, eligibility, or the terms of a current partner agreement.
