If Cochonnet crashes or will not launch on your Steam Deck, start with SteamOS updates, a restart, and a check of the game files. Then try reversible compatibility and graphics changes only if the symptom points that way. These are general Steam troubleshooting steps—not Cochonnet-specific fixes tested or confirmed by its developer.
Steam currently lists Cochonnet’s Steam Deck compatibility as Unknown. Valve defines that status as “We haven’t checked this game for compatibility yet.” It is not the same as Unsupported, and it does not establish that the game has a known Deck crash problem. Steam’s Cochonnet listing specifies Windows requirements, which do not confirm Steam Deck behavior.
Why might Cochonnet keep crashing on Steam Deck?
The available information does not identify a Cochonnet-specific cause for crashes on Deck. The game’s Steam compatibility status is Unknown, meaning Valve has not checked it for compatibility; it is neither a Verified result nor an Unsupported classification. Valve says its compatibility review is ongoing, so the status may change. Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility categories distinguish Verified (works out of the box), Playable (may require user configuration), Unsupported (not currently considered playable), and Unknown (not yet checked).

What should I try first when Cochonnet crashes?
Work through the steps in order, testing the game after each change. This helps isolate whether the issue is general SteamOS instability, local game files, or a compatibility setting. Valve’s Steam Deck software troubleshooting guidance applies to both LCD and OLED models.
1. Update SteamOS and restart the Deck
- Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates and install any available updates.
- Restart using Steam > Power > Restart, then try Cochonnet again.
Updates and a restart are among Valve’s first general recommendations for instability. Record whether the game crashes on launch or only after you start playing.

2. Temporarily close third-party apps installed through Desktop Mode
Exit or disable apps you added through Desktop Mode, restart the Deck, and retest. This is a way to check for a software conflict, not evidence that any particular app is known to conflict with Cochonnet. Valve includes isolating third-party applications among its troubleshooting suggestions. See Steam Deck software troubleshooting.
3. Verify Cochonnet’s installed files
- Open Cochonnet from your Steam Library.
- Choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Let Steam finish, then launch the game again.
Steam says verification can help when crashes stem from incorrect or missing installed files. It may take several minutes. A small number of failed verification entries can be local configuration files and may be normal. Steam’s file-verification instructions explain the process.

4. Clear the download cache if Cochonnet will not start
This step is most relevant when the game fails to launch, rather than when it closes during a session. In Steam settings, open Downloads and select Clear Download Cache. Steam says this can help with games that will not start. It does not delete installed games, but you will need to sign in to Steam again. Treat it as a client-level diagnostic, not a Cochonnet-specific fix. Steam’s download-cache guidance covers the option.
5. Test a Proton compatibility tool
- From Cochonnet’s Library menu, open Properties > Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose the latest Proton option shown and test the game.
Change one setting at a time and note the original setting so you can undo the experiment. Valve suggests trying the latest Proton compatibility tool for Steam app issues when appropriate; this is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix for Cochonnet. If the setting makes no difference or makes the game less stable, restore the original choice. Valve’s Deck troubleshooting guidance includes Proton as a general troubleshooting option.

6. Lower graphics settings if the game slows or stutters before crashing
If Cochonnet becomes slow, stutters, or crashes under load, reduce the graphics preset or individual graphics settings in the game, then retest. This is less relevant to a crash that happens immediately on launch. Valve recommends lowering graphics settings for performance problems, but the advice does not establish that graphics settings cause Cochonnet crashes. Read Valve’s troubleshooting guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. Report a crash that persists
Recheck the Steam store page in case the Deck compatibility status or game details have changed. If the crash continues, contact Steam Support or use the game’s support route. Include the Deck model (LCD or OLED), SteamOS version, game build if available, when the crash occurs, and which steps you tried. These details help support staff distinguish a launch failure from a crash during play or a performance-related problem.

| Symptom | Start with | Next useful test |

| It closes after launching or during a session | Update SteamOS, restart, close third-party Desktop Mode apps, then verify files | Test Proton, changing one setting at a time |
