Collaborative web browsing—usually called cobrowsing—lets two or more people view, navigate, or interact with the same web content in real time. How much they can do together depends on the tool: some synchronize where participants are on a page, while support tools may add shared interaction, annotations, or controls for hiding sensitive fields.

What does collaborative web browsing mean?

Collaborative web browsing is a shared web-page experience, not one standardized product or technical architecture. Participants may simply follow the same page or may be able to interact with it together. In customer support, for example, an agent and a customer can review a company webpage at the same time while the agent gives visual guidance.

Zoom defines cobrowsing as “a web-based visual engagement solution that allows agents and customers to securely and simultaneously navigate and interact with the same web page at the same time.” That is Zoom’s description of its product category, not a guarantee that every cobrowsing implementation offers the same controls or security properties. How does cobrowsing differ from screen sharing or sending a link?

Method What is shared What it does not necessarily provide
Cobrowsing A web-page experience that participants can view, navigate, or interact with together; the scope and controls vary by tool. It does not necessarily share the whole desktop or provide system-level control.
Screen sharing A view of a screen; capabilities depend on the product and its settings. It is not necessarily limited to one website or equipped with page-specific masking.
Link sharing A link or other content sent to a destination selected by the user. Sending a link alone does not make participants navigate or interact with the page together in real time.

The distinctions in the cobrowsing and screen-sharing rows reflect Zoom’s comparison of its own SDK with screen sharing; they are not universal rules for every product. Zoom Developer Documentation The Web Share API covers sharing text, links, and other content to a user-selected destination, rather than defining a joint browsing session. W3C Web Share API

What can participants do in a support session?

In a support-oriented session, a customer may share a company webpage with an agent so they can work through it together. Depending on the implementation, the agent may be able to point out interface elements, annotate or highlight areas, mirror a cursor, or help with a form. These capabilities are product-specific, not inherent in the term “cobrowsing.”

Zoom’s SDK documentation describes an agent, customer, and administrator model and lists screen resizing, masking, annotation and highlighting, cursor mirroring, and audit logs among its features. It also says the SDK uses JavaScript and HTML and requires no plug-in or download. Those are claims about Zoom’s SDK; availability in a particular deployment depends on the product and configuration. Zoom identifies complex form completion, contact-center support, e-commerce guidance, payments, and financial-customer engagement as use cases. Zoom Developer Documentation

Can a support agent see what I see on a webpage?

In a cobrowsing session, an agent may see the shared webpage, but exactly what is visible depends on the tool and its settings. Before sharing, check which page or content is included, whether the agent can interact with it, and whether sensitive fields are hidden. Zoom says its SDK can mask or redact selected areas from the agent’s view; that does not mean masking is automatic or that every sensitive field is protected. The configuration and behavior of the specific implementation matter. Zoom Developer Documentation

Does cobrowsing use WebRTC?

Not necessarily. WebRTC is a set of standardized browser APIs for real-time media and generic application-data exchange; it is relevant technology for real-time browser experiences, but it is neither a synonym for cobrowsing nor a specification for how a cobrowsing product must work. If an implementation does use WebRTC, its network information handling is worth reviewing. The W3C specification notes that WebRTC can expose information about a browser’s network context, potentially including private IP addresses, to an application or communicating party. It also describes limiting exposure by choosing address candidates and using relays such as TURN. This is a WebRTC-specific consideration, not evidence that every cobrowsing service exposes those details. W3C WebRTC Recommendation

What should an organization check before choosing cobrowsing?

  • Scope: Confirm whether the session covers a particular website or a broader screen.
  • Participant controls: Establish whether users can observe, annotate, navigate, or interact together.
  • Sensitive content: Find out which fields or page areas can be masked, who configures masking, and what remains visible.
  • Technical and operational fit: Check integration requirements, browser and page compatibility, and any real-time technology’s privacy implications.

These checks matter because “cobrowsing” describes the shared experience, not a fixed set of capabilities or privacy protections.

Where the term came from

Collaborative web browsing has been discussed for decades. A Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories report from 2001 describes historical approaches such as synchronizing navigation and scrolling. It provides context for the idea, but should not be taken as a description of present-day product features. Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories, “Collaborative Web Browsing”
