A 2022 Green Chemistry study reported a lead- and palladium-free catalyst that uses cobalt nanoparticles modified by nitrogen-doped carbon and supported on silica to selectively hydrogenate alkynes. The authors reported use on fine chemicals and vitamin precursors, tolerance of several other reducible functional groups, and recycling for at least five runs with consistent activity. These are results for the compounds and conditions studied—not proof of universal performance, commercial availability, or industrial-scale readiness.
What does the cobalt catalyst do?
Alkyne semi-hydrogenation adds hydrogen to a carbon–carbon triple bond to produce an alkene. The selectivity challenge is stopping at the alkene rather than continuing to add hydrogen and producing an alkane. Depending on the reaction, controlling which alkene form is produced can matter as well.
The catalyst reported by Peter McNeice and coauthors combines cobalt nanoparticles with a nitrogen-doped carbon modifier and a silica support. The authors describe it as free of both lead and palladium. Their 2022 paper reports applications to fine chemicals and vitamin precursors and selective hydrogenation in the presence of cyano, keto, aldehyde, and nitro groups. That functional-group tolerance applies to the substrates tested; it does not establish that every molecule containing those groups will behave the same way.

Lindlar catalyst is a widely used system for selectively hydrogenating alkynes. A typical formulation is palladium on calcium carbonate, with lead and quinoline; the exact composition is not universal. Chemistry World describes a typical formulation as 5 wt% palladium on calcium carbonate with 1–5 wt% lead and quinoline, and notes concerns including lead toxicity, over-hydrogenation, and isomerization. The cobalt study’s stated design goal is to avoid lead and palladium while retaining alkyne-to-alkene selectivity.

This is a materials-level comparison, not evidence that the cobalt catalyst is a drop-in replacement for every Lindlar-catalyzed reaction. The available abstract does not establish a like-for-like comparison of operating conditions, substrate coverage, conversion, or alkene selectivity across the two systems.
What did the 2022 study report?
- Composition: cobalt nanoparticles modified by nitrogen-doped carbon and supported on silica.
- Applications: the authors report preparation of fine chemicals and vitamin precursors.
- Functional-group tolerance: selective alkyne hydrogenation was reported in the presence of cyano, keto, aldehyde, and nitro groups for the cases studied.
- Recycling: the publisher abstract says the optimal catalyst was recycled for at least five runs with consistent activity. This is the study’s reported result, not a general durability guarantee.

How does this fit with other cobalt nanoparticle research?
Other cobalt approaches should not be conflated with the 2022 silica-supported catalyst. A 2017 ACS Catalysis paper reported N-graphitic-modified cobalt nanoparticles on silica, designated Co/phen@SiO₂-800. For its studied internal alkynes, it reported up to 93% selectivity for Z isomers, and it also reported conversion of terminal alkynes to terminal alkenes. Those results belong to that earlier catalyst and study, not to the 2022 system. Read the 2017 study record.
A separate 2023 New Journal of Chemistry paper describes ligand-free, in situ-generated cobalt nanoparticles used with ammonia-borane for transfer semihydrogenation. Its abstract reports 72–96% yields of Z-alkenes for the aryl–aryl, aryl–alkyl, and terminal alkynes studied. This is a different catalyst approach and hydrogen source, so its yields cannot be used as performance figures for the 2022 catalyst. See the 2023 paper record.

What the published summary does—and does not—establish
The abstract supports a promising research result: a cobalt-based material without lead or palladium that was reported to hydrogenate selected alkynes selectively, tolerate several functional groups, and remain active through at least five recycling runs. It does not provide enough information for a reproducible procedure or a quantitative, apples-to-apples comparison with Lindlar catalyst. For that, readers would need to consult the full article and supplementary information for reaction conditions and substrate-by-substrate conversion and selectivity.
Nor does the abstract establish that the catalyst is commercially available, validated at industrial scale, or safer overall across its full lifecycle. Avoid treating “lead-free” as a complete safety assessment: the finding only identifies the catalyst as free of lead and palladium, not the hazards of every reagent, process, or waste stream.
