Coal-tar pitch and carbon black are different industrial carbon materials with different jobs. Coal-tar pitch is a coal-tar distillation product used mainly as a binder and impregnant in aluminium anodes and graphite electrodes. Carbon black is a fine carbon particulate used principally to reinforce rubber, add colour, or provide conductivity, with the exact role determined by its grade. Himadri Speciality Chemical, an India-based speciality-chemicals manufacturer, produces both categories alongside naphthalene, speciality oils, construction-chemical additives and newer battery materials.
Himadri’s FY2024-25 sustainability report describes seven manufacturing facilities in India and one unit in China. It reports installed capacities of 500,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) for coal-tar distillation, 120,000 MTPA for carbon black and 60,000 MTPA for speciality carbon black. Those are installed capacities, not a statement that every plant operates at that volume every year.
What Himadri makes
Himadri’s portfolio is built around carbon materials and speciality chemicals. The company’s corporate description lists speciality carbon black, coal-tar pitch, refined naphthalene, new-energy materials, speciality oils, sodium naphthalene formaldehyde (SNF), power and related products. It identifies customers and applications across lithium-ion batteries, paints, plastics, tyres, aluminium, graphite electrodes, agrochemicals, defence and construction chemicals.

Coal-tar distillation produces several streams, and downstream processing allows a manufacturer to serve different technical specifications. A buyer therefore needs to identify the material and grade required for a particular process rather than assume that any pitch or carbon black is interchangeable.

The table shows market categories, not a guarantee that every grade is suitable for every listed industry. Formulation, performance and regulatory requirements differ by customer and end product.
What coal-tar pitch is and how it works
Coal-tar pitch is the heavy, carbon-rich fraction left after coal tar is distilled. Himadri’s FY2023-24 annual report defines Coal Tar Pitch (CTP) as “a complex chemical generated by distilling coal tar” and calls it a crucial raw material for aluminium smelting, graphite-electrode production, industrial-material surface coating and chemical industries.
Its most important function is to bind carbon particles. In an aluminium smelter, petroleum-coke and other carbon aggregates must be formed into robust anodes before they are baked and used in the electrolytic cells. Pitch wets the coke particles and permeates their open pores. The mixture can then be compacted into a shaped, handleable body. During subsequent heat treatment, the binder contributes carbon to the anode structure. Binder quality influences how the paste can be mixed and formed and how the finished anode performs in service.
Graphite-electrode makers use pitch in a comparable way, although the raw materials, forming route and final heat treatment are different. Pitch binds the carbonaceous ingredients during electrode manufacture and can also be used to impregnate a previously baked electrode. Impregnation fills accessible pores and can improve the electrode’s density and operating behaviour when the selected grade and process are properly matched.
Grades are selected by process requirements
Industrial buyers do not select pitch by colour alone. They qualify grades against properties such as softening behaviour, quinoline-insoluble content and the ability to wet and penetrate the particular carbon feedstock. The required balance depends on whether the material is being used as an aluminium-anode binder, a graphite-electrode binder, an impregnant or a different carbon product. A specification should also define sampling, test methods, packaging, storage and acceptable batch variation.

Himadri says its coal-tar-pitch business has approvals from major global aluminium and graphite manufacturers and that it developed a super-speciality grade for India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). These are company statements; an individual purchaser still needs to verify that the relevant grade is approved for its own plant, process and geography.
Where coal-tar pitch is used
Aluminium anodes
Aluminium producers mix pitch with carbon aggregates to make prebaked anodes. The binder must coat particles evenly, enter the pore structure and produce a paste that can be compacted without excessive defects. After baking, the anode has to survive handling and the high-temperature cell environment while maintaining suitable electrical and chemical performance. A change in pitch behaviour can require adjustments to mixing temperature, compaction pressure, baking schedules or paste formulation.
Graphite electrodes
Graphite-electrode production uses pitch in forming and, in some routes, in impregnation after baking. Electrode manufacturers evaluate how the pitch affects green strength, carbon yield, pore filling and the final electrode’s resistance to thermal and mechanical stress. Graphite India is among the customers named by Himadri.
Carbon fibres, coatings and infrastructure materials
Himadri’s FY2023-24 annual report also describes pitch applications in carbon fibres, lithium-ion battery anodes, coatings, roofing, paving and chemical feedstocks. These uses should not be treated as one universal formulation: a pitch suitable for an electrode binder may not meet the processing or purity requirements of a carbon-fibre precursor or a coating system. The relevant grade, downstream process and customer qualification determine suitability.
What carbon black does in Himadri’s portfolio
Carbon black is a finely divided carbon material whose performance comes from grade-specific particle and surface characteristics. In Himadri’s earlier core portfolio, the company supplied coal-tar pitch to aluminium and graphite-electrode industries and carbon black to tyre industries. In a tyre compound, carbon black reinforces the rubber and affects wear, handling, hysteresis, colour and processing. The compounder chooses a grade to balance those properties with the tyre’s design and manufacturing conditions.

Speciality carbon black extends beyond conventional tyre reinforcement. Depending on grade and formulation, it can provide deep black pigmentation, ultraviolet protection, reinforcement or electrical conductivity in paints, plastics, coatings, sealants, cables, batteries and other advanced materials. Himadri’s corporate site lists tyres, paints, plastics, aluminium, graphite electrodes, batteries, agrochemicals, defence and construction chemicals among the sectors served by its wider carbon and speciality-chemical portfolio. That list describes application markets, not a claim that one carbon-black grade serves all of them.
Why grade matching matters
Two carbon blacks can look similar in a sample yet behave differently in dispersion, tint strength, conductivity, viscosity or reinforcement. Buyers normally specify the target polymer or coating, loading level, mixing equipment, colour or resistivity requirement and compliance obligations. A technical data sheet and a plant trial are more useful than choosing solely by the generic term “carbon black.”

Coal-tar pitch versus carbon black
The materials are related through the broader carbon-materials industry but are not substitutes. The following comparison uses the distinctions relevant to industrial procurement.

In short, pitch helps turn carbon particles into a shaped or impregnated carbon component, while carbon black is itself the functional particulate added to another material. Confusing the two can lead to the wrong tests, unsuitable equipment settings and failed product qualification.

Himadri’s manufacturing scale and market position
The FY2024-25 sustainability report describes Himadri as a manufacturer of carbon materials and speciality chemicals operating seven facilities in India and one unit in China. Its reported installed capacities are:
- Coal-tar distillation: 500,000 MTPA.
- Carbon black: 120,000 MTPA.
- Speciality carbon black: 60,000 MTPA.
MTPA means metric tonnes per annum. These figures describe installed nameplate capacity reported for FY2024-25, not guaranteed sales, output or utilisation. Capacity can be affected by maintenance, product mix, feedstock availability, quality campaigns and market demand.
On its coal-tar-pitch product page, Himadri states that it is “the largest coal tar pitch manufacturer in India, holding over 70% market share in the space.” The over-70% figure is Himadri’s own company claim and should be read with that attribution; the cited material does not establish an independently audited market-share calculation.

A procurement decision should begin with the downstream product, not the supplier’s broad category label. The following sequence helps an aluminium, electrode, tyre, plastics or coatings buyer avoid an expensive mismatch.

State whether the material will bind an anode, impregnate an electrode, reinforce rubber, colour a coating or provide conductivity. Include mixing, forming, baking, curing and storage conditions.
- Write a measurable specification. For pitch, identify softening behaviour, quinoline-insoluble limits and wetting or impregnation requirements. For carbon black, define dispersion, tint, reinforcement, conductivity or other performance targets using agreed test methods.
- Request documentation. Obtain a technical data sheet, certificate of analysis, safety information, packaging details, batch traceability and any relevant customer or regulatory approvals. A general corporate brochure is not a substitute for grade documentation.
- Run a controlled trial. Compare the candidate with the incumbent material using the same feedstock, formulation, equipment and test conditions. Record mixing energy, temperature, viscosity, forming behaviour, baked or cured properties and rejects.
- Qualify supply continuity. Review manufacturing location, lead time, transport mode, minimum shipment, storage life, emergency supply options and communication procedures for out-of-specification batches.
- Approve the exact grade and change-control rules. The approval should cover the product code, specification limits, packaging and notification period for any change in feedstock, process, plant or test method.
Approvals from a major aluminium or graphite manufacturer can be useful evidence of technical capability, but they do not automatically transfer to another plant. Each customer’s raw materials, equipment and quality system can produce different acceptance criteria.

Battery and advanced-material opportunities
Himadri identifies lithium-ion battery anode materials and related new-energy materials as growth areas. Its annual-report material also lists pitch applications in lithium-ion battery anodes and carbon fibres. In these markets, purity, particle control, electrochemical performance, cycle life and compatibility with the cell-maker’s process are decisive. A company’s presence in the category does not by itself prove that a particular pitch or speciality carbon-black grade is qualified for a specific cell design.
The same caution applies to defence, coatings and construction chemicals. Himadri cites these sectors in its portfolio description and reports a DRDO super-speciality pitch grade, but an end user should request the exact qualification, test data and compliance documentation for the intended application.
Common misconceptions
“Coal-tar pitch is just tar.”
Coal-tar pitch is a processed, specification-controlled distillation product. Its industrial value comes from predictable softening, wetting, pore penetration and carbon-forming behaviour, not simply from being a sticky black liquid or solid.

“Any carbon black can replace another.”
Carbon-black grades differ in dispersion, reinforcement, colour and conductivity. Substitution without a formulation trial can change tyre durability, coating appearance, plastic processing or electrical performance.
“A listed industry is proof of universal suitability.”
Portfolio lists describe markets served across multiple grades. They do not mean that one product is suitable for tyres, batteries, paints and aluminium at the same time.
“Installed capacity equals annual production.”
Nameplate capacity is a scale indicator. Actual output depends on utilisation, product mix, maintenance and demand, so buyers should ask for supply capability and lead-time commitments for the specific grade.
Bottom line for readers
