A CNC machine is a computer-controlled machine category, while a plasma cutter is a cutting process that melts electrically conductive metal with an ionized-gas arc. A CNC mill removes material mechanically with a rotating tool; a plasma torch removes material thermally by melting it and blowing the molten metal away.

The terms are not opposites. A plasma cutter can be handheld, or it can be mounted on a CNC table whose controller moves the torch automatically. The right choice depends on the material, thickness, shape, edge and feature requirements, production volume, and the complete equipment setup—not on whether one technology is universally “better.”

What “CNC machine” and “plasma cutter” actually describe

CNC machine: a control method and a broad machine family

CNC means computer numerical control. Software converts a part design or programmed toolpath into coordinated machine movements. The CNC controller can command spindle speed, feed rate, axis travel, tool changes, coolant and other functions, depending on the machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“CNC machine” therefore does not identify one cutting process. A CNC mill, router, lathe, grinder, waterjet table and plasma table all use computer-controlled motion, but they remove or shape material in different ways. In the common comparison with a plasma cutter, the CNC example is a milling machine.

During end milling, a spindle rotates an end mill while the machine moves the tool and workpiece along programmed axes. The rotating cutter removes chips from the workpiece. Haas describes end milling applications such as slots, pockets, contours and intricate profiles in its end-milling guide. Its mill safety guidance explains that the machine is intended to cut and shape metals and other hard materials, with most cutting performed by a spindle-mounted rotating tool (Haas mill safety summary).

Plasma cutter: a thermal cutting process

A plasma cutter uses an electrical arc and a gas stream. Hypertherm defines it this way: “A plasma cutter, or plasma cutting machine, uses a plasma stream to transfer energy to a conductive work material” (Hypertherm plasma technology). The arc ionizes the gas, the resulting plasma transfers intense heat to the workpiece, and the gas flow ejects the molten metal from the cut.

Because the process requires an electrical path, plasma is intended for conductive metals. Common examples include mild or carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper and brass. It is not a general-purpose process for wood, plastic, glass or other nonconductive materials.

Hypertherm describes a plasma arc temperature approaching about 11,700°C (40,000°F). That figure characterizes the approximate temperature of a plasma arc on the referenced educational page; it is not a guaranteed operating temperature for every torch, material or cut (source).

Why a CNC plasma cutter is both terms at once

A mechanized CNC plasma system combines the two ideas. The plasma torch performs the thermal cut, while a CNC controller moves the torch along a programmed path. A typical system includes a cutting table, plasma power supply, gas controls, torch-height or motion equipment and a CNC controller. The controller reads CAM output and determines torch start and stop signals, travel direction and speed (Hypertherm’s automated-cutting overview).

Consequently, “CNC” describes how movement is controlled, and “plasma” describes how metal is cut. A handheld plasma cutter has no CNC motion system; a CNC plasma table has both.

How the two processes work

What happens in CNC milling

  1. Secure the workpiece. The stock is clamped or fixtured so cutting forces cannot move it.
  2. Load tools and establish coordinates. The operator installs an end mill or other cutter, sets tool data and defines the work offset.
  3. Program the toolpath. CAM software or hand-written G-code specifies cutting paths, spindle speed, feed rate, depths and retracts.
  4. Remove material in passes. The rotating tool takes controlled cuts to create a slot, pocket, contour, hole or three-dimensional profile.
  5. Inspect the result. Dimensions, surface finish, burrs and tool wear are checked, then finishing passes or deburring are performed if required.

Milling is a subtractive process: the part is formed by removing chips. It can create internal features and detailed profiles that a through-cutting process cannot produce without additional operations.

What happens in plasma cutting

  1. Prepare conductive stock. The plate or sheet is placed on a support table and connected to the electrical circuit.
  2. Select gas and process settings. The power supply and torch are configured for the material and thickness, with the appropriate consumables installed.
  3. Initiate the arc. The torch establishes an arc and forms a high-energy plasma stream.
  4. Move along the programmed or guided path. The torch travels at a controlled speed while the arc melts a narrow portion of the metal.
  5. Eject molten material. Gas flow clears the kerf, leaving a separated part and, depending on settings, dross that may need removal.

Plasma is primarily a profile-cutting process for plate and sheet. It does not use a rotating tool to carve pockets or sculpt an enclosed three-dimensional cavity.

Where CNC milling is the better fit

Detailed parts and internal features

Choose milling when the design needs pockets, slots, counterbores, drilled or interpolated holes, steps, contoured surfaces or a controlled three-dimensional profile. A cutter can enter the workpiece and remove material from areas that a torch cutting only a perimeter cannot reach.

Materials beyond conductive plate

A CNC mill can be configured for many metals and other hard materials. Material choice still depends on spindle power, cutter type, workholding, rigidity, heat control and machine limits. Do not assume that every CNC mill can process every material simply because it is CNC-controlled.

Where plasma cutting is the better fit

Fast separation of conductive plate

Plasma is commonly used to cut steel, stainless steel and aluminum plate or sheet into brackets, panels, gussets, bases and other flat profiles. Fabricators and repair technicians use it where the primary task is separating a shape from stock rather than machining a pocket into it.

Fabrication, repair and field work

Application areas listed by Hypertherm include metal fabrication, repair, automotive restoration, construction and pipe work. Plasma systems can also perform bevel cutting, gouging and marking when the torch, consumables and machine are configured for those operations (application overview).

Bevels, gouges and marks

A plasma process can remove material along a surface for gouging, prepare an edge with a bevel or mark identifying features. These are different operations from milling and require appropriate torch motion, settings and consumables.

Handheld plasma cutter versus CNC plasma table

These are different equipment packages and should not be treated as interchangeable.

System Operator interaction Typical strength Main planning issues
Handheld plasma cutter The operator guides the torch manually Repair, one-off cuts, access to large or installed workpieces Manual consistency, torch control, safe access and edge cleanup
CNC plasma table Software and gantry guide the torch automatically Repeatable plate profiles and production batches Table size, gantry, CAM workflow, torch height, ventilation, consumables and programming
CNC mill Controller guides a spindle-mounted cutting tool Complex parts, pockets, slots, contours and dimensional finishing Workholding, tool selection, spindle capacity, chip control and multi-operation setup

A CNC plasma table is still a plasma cutter in process terms, but it is also a CNC machine in control terms. Hypertherm’s CNC plasma-table guidance emphasizes matching the table and configuration to the parts, quantities and operating requirements.

How to choose the right process

  1. Identify the material. Confirm whether it is electrically conductive. If it is not, plasma is unsuitable. For conductive materials, compare the material’s behavior, thickness and required edge condition with the machine’s documented capability.
  2. Measure the thickness range. A process that works on thin sheet may not be appropriate for the thickest stock in your workload. Use the actual material and thickness, not a generic label such as “steel.”
  3. Describe the geometry. For a flat outline, plasma may fit. For pockets, slots, internal steps, controlled holes or three-dimensional contours, plan for milling or additional machining.
  4. Set the quality target. Decide how much taper, dross, burr removal, dimensional variation and surface finishing the part can tolerate. There is no universal quality or speed winner because the processes perform different operations.
  5. Estimate quantity and repeatability. One repair cut may favor a handheld tool. Repeated profiles may justify a CNC plasma table. A family of precision parts with several features may justify CNC milling.
  6. Define the complete installation. Include the table or machine envelope, power, gas supply, ventilation, fume and noise controls, workholding, software, consumables, maintenance access and operator training.
  7. Calculate recurring costs. Account for electricity, gas where applicable, plasma electrodes and nozzles, mill cutters, coolant or chip handling, maintenance, programming and labor. A machine’s purchase price alone does not determine the economical process.
  8. Plan secondary operations. Plasma-cut edges may need dross removal, grinding, deburring or machining. A milled part may need multiple tools, repositioning or finishing. Include those operations in cycle-time and cost decisions.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

“CNC” is treated as a material or process

CNC only identifies the control method. Always name the actual machine: CNC mill, router, lathe or plasma table. This prevents an inaccurate comparison between a handheld torch and an industrial machining center.

Plasma is assumed to cut anything

Plasma needs a conductive workpiece. Verify conductivity before planning a cut, and confirm that the selected power supply, torch and consumables are rated for the material and thickness.

Speed is compared without defining the job

Cutting a perimeter, milling a pocket and producing a finished precision surface are different tasks. Specify the geometry, tolerances, edge condition and quantity before claiming that one process is faster.

Consumables are ignored

Plasma electrodes, nozzles and related consumables wear according to settings, material and operating practice. Milling cutters also wear or break. Budget replacement parts and schedule inspection rather than treating either process as maintenance-free.

Safety and quality controls

Both processes require machine-specific training and documented procedures. Milling involves rotating tools, entanglement, sharp chips, workholding forces and possible coolant exposure. Plasma involves high electrical energy, hot metal, ultraviolet radiation, fumes, sparks, compressed gases and fire hazards.

Worked examples

Flat steel mounting plates

If the job is a repeated outline cut from conductive steel plate, a CNC plasma table can load a CAM file and guide the torch through each profile. Allow for edge cleanup and verify that the resulting taper and dross meet the design requirement.

An aluminum bracket with a recessed pocket

The material is conductive, but conductivity alone does not make plasma the right choice. A recessed pocket and controlled internal dimensions point toward CNC milling, followed by deburring or finishing as specified.

Repairing a damaged frame in place

A handheld plasma cutter may be practical when the workpiece cannot be moved to a table. The operator must manage access, sparks, fumes and cut consistency, then inspect and finish the repaired area.

A profile that also needs precision holes

One possible workflow is to cut the outside profile on a CNC plasma table and machine the holes afterward. Whether that is economical depends on the hole tolerances, quantity, alignment requirements and available equipment.
