A CMOS image sensor is a semiconductor device that converts light entering a camera into electrical signals. Its array of light-sensitive pixels detects the light, and circuitry reads the pixel signals so the camera can process them into an image.
How a CMOS image sensor works
CMOS stands for complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor. In an image sensor, many light-sensitive pixels are arranged in an array. Each pixel contains a photodiode that responds to light by producing electrical charge, along with circuitry that helps prepare and read the signal.
- The lens directs light: Light from the scene passes through the camera lens and reaches the sensor’s pixel array.
- Photodiodes detect it: Each photodiode responds to the light falling on it and produces electrical charge.
- Pixel circuitry prepares the signal: CMOS circuitry amplifies or otherwise prepares pixel signals for readout. The precise circuit design varies among sensors.
- The camera reads and processes the data: Camera electronics use the read signals to create image data. Color filtering and further processing also contribute to the finished photograph; the sensor alone does not necessarily output a complete color image.
Sony Semiconductor Solutions’ overview of image-sensor technology describes the sensor as an electronic eye and explains the photodiode-and-amplifier arrangement in CMOS pixels.

CMOS and CCD are two major image-sensor architectures. CMOS designs can offer advantages in speed and power consumption, and can integrate analog and digital circuitry on the same chip. These are general architectural characteristics, not a guarantee that every CMOS sensor will outperform every CCD sensor.

- The OV2640 image sensor has 2 million pixels (1632x1232 pixels), its small size, low operating voltage, and provides all the functions of a single UXGA camera and image processor
- It supports many parameter settings such as exposure, white balance, chroma, saturation and contrast, and supports JPEG/RGB565 format output, which can meet the needs of different occasions
- Through the control of SCCB bus, 10-bit sampling data of various resolutions can be output in the form of whole frame, sub-sampling, windowing, etc. Users can fully control image quality, data format and transmission mode
- OV2640 image sensor uses unique sensor technology to improve image quality and obtain clear and stable color images by reducing or eliminating optical or electronic defects such as fixed pattern noise, tail support, floating, etc
Image quality, noise, power use, and speed depend on the sensor’s generation and design, its operating conditions, and the rest of the camera system. The label “CMOS” by itself is not enough to predict how a particular camera will perform. Sony’s technical overview discusses the broad CMOS and CCD differences.
What rolling shutter and global shutter mean
Rolling and global shutter describe how a sensor captures and reads a frame. They are not definitions of CMOS: both terms refer to timing approaches that can be used with CMOS sensors. “Shutter” in this context does not necessarily mean a moving mechanical shutter.
Rolling shutter
A rolling-shutter sensor captures or reads the image row by row. Because different rows correspond to different moments, fast-moving subjects or camera movement can make straight lines appear skewed or objects look distorted.
Global shutter
A global-shutter sensor captures the image across the focal plane at once before readout. This avoids the timing distortion associated with sequential row capture. Global shutter can also make flash synchronization easier in machine-vision inspection. Sony’s explanation of global-shutter technology describes these differences.

Back-illuminated and stacked CMOS sensors
These terms describe sensor construction rather than a different way of converting light into electrical signals.
Back-illuminated (BSI)
In a back-illuminated sensor, wiring sits behind the light-receiving photodiode layer. This reduces the wiring’s obstruction of incoming light compared with a front-illuminated arrangement and can improve sensitivity, depending on the design. It does not guarantee a particular image quality. Sony’s account of image-sensor technology describes this arrangement.

Stacked
A stacked sensor has pixel and circuit sections fabricated on separate layers and connected. Separating those sections gives designers more freedom to optimize the pixels and logic, and can support compact, capable sensors. “Stacked” describes how the sensor is built, not a separate image-sensing principle. Sony Semiconductor Solutions’ overview of stacked image sensors explains the construction.
