Cloudflare Python Workers run Python through Pyodide, a CPython implementation compiled to WebAssembly, inside a V8 isolate. They are not ordinary Python processes running in Linux containers: the Workers runtime manages requests and platform services, while Pyodide executes the Python code and connects it to JavaScript.
How Python Workers run CPython at the edge
Cloudflare’s How Python Workers Work documentation, last updated July 9, 2026, describes Python Workers as Pyodide running within a V8 isolate. Pyodide is a CPython implementation compiled to WebAssembly. That means Python code runs as a WebAssembly guest in the isolate model—not as a separate operating-system process in a conventional server container.
The distinction matters when assessing compatibility and behavior. Python syntax and much of the familiar CPython environment are available, but the execution environment is WebAssembly and the Workers runtime, not a general-purpose Linux host.
What happens during development and deployment
Local development
The documented local command is pywrangler dev. According to Cloudflare’s workflow, the runtime selects a Pyodide version based on the Worker’s compatibility date, installs packages declared in the project’s pyproject.toml, creates a V8 isolate, injects Pyodide, and serves the Python code.

Deployment and request startup
During deployment, Wrangler uploads the code and project packages. Cloudflare validates the code, creates an isolate, injects Pyodide, runs the entrypoint and top-level imports, and snapshots WebAssembly linear memory. The deployed snapshot is then used to bootstrap an isolate when a request arrives.
Cloudflare describes this as a way to move expensive initialization work to deployment and reduce cold-start work. The documentation does not provide a numeric latency improvement, so the mechanism should not be read as a particular startup time or percentage reduction.

How Python reaches JavaScript and Workers services
Python Workers can use JavaScript globals such as Request, Response, and fetch(), as well as configured Workers bindings. Cloudflare’s Python runtime documentation describes the bridge as Pyodide’s foreign function interface (FFI) together with Cloudflare’s bindings. Access to a binding is granted through Worker configuration; for example, a Worker can be configured to read from and write to a KV namespace.
For a more Python-oriented interface to runtime globals, Cloudflare recommends the workers module from workers-runtime-sdk. Pyodide’s to_js is available when explicit conversion to JavaScript values is needed. The SDK and runtime handle many conversions at the RPC boundary.
In its September 21, 2026 general-availability announcement, Cloudflare said Python Workers natively support platform bindings and listed Workers AI, R2, D1, Hyperdrive, Durable Objects, Queues, and Workflows among the integrated services. Those integrations make platform capabilities reachable from Python; they do not turn the runtime into a general operating-system environment.
Which Python packages work?
Package compatibility depends on whether a package and its dependencies can run in the WebAssembly environment. Cloudflare’s September 21, 2026 GA announcement says packages containing native C, C++, or Rust extensions need compatible WebAssembly builds. Cloudflare described work on the PyEmscripten platform and build tooling to broaden the available package ecosystem.
The announcement also discussed HTTP clients such as requests and httpx, which had been affected by missing low-level socket support, and described routing requests through JavaScript fetch and adding socket support. It named packages including openai, langchain, and mcp as able to run. Treat those as examples from Cloudflare’s announcement, not as a guarantee that every version or transitive dependency is supported.
Cloudflare’s cited materials do not establish an exhaustive list of unsupported standard-library modules or a complete package compatibility matrix. Check the current package and standard-library documentation for the specific dependency versions your project requires.

What a basic Python Worker looks like
Cloudflare’s Python Workers basics documentation, last updated June 22, 2026, describes a minimal Worker as a Python file containing a Default class that extends WorkerEntrypoint, with an asynchronous fetch method that returns a Response. Wrangler configuration points to the Python entry file and sets compatibility options.
This shape reflects the division of responsibilities: the Worker entrypoint handles the request lifecycle, while Python code executes through Pyodide and uses runtime globals or configured bindings when it needs platform capabilities.
Dynamic Python execution is a separate case
Deploying a Python Worker is not the same as loading Python modules dynamically at runtime. Cloudflare’s Dynamic Workers getting-started documentation says Python modules can be run dynamically and requires the python_workers compatibility flag to load the Python runtime.

Quick Recap
What the edge-runtime model means in practice
- Execution substrate: Pyodide runs CPython compiled to WebAssembly inside a V8 isolate, rather than as a conventional server process.
- Startup strategy: deployment performs imports and initialization before snapshotting WebAssembly memory for request-time bootstrap; Cloudflare documents the approach but does not state a numeric improvement.
- Platform access: JavaScript interop and configured bindings connect Python code to Workers APIs and services.
- Dependency planning: ordinary package installation alone does not guarantee compatibility; native extensions need suitable WebAssembly builds and dependencies must fit the runtime.
