To find out what an AI answer really costs, divide the full cost of the work by the number of results that meet your acceptance criteria. Cloudflare’s Auto Router is designed to choose a model request by request, but its published savings and benchmark results are internal vendor figures—not a forecast for your workload. A fair evaluation measures cost, success rate and latency together.
What “cost per useful result” measures
Token prices tell you what a model charges for input and output tokens; they do not tell you how much it costs to get an acceptable result. A lower-priced model may need more tokens, retries or verification to finish a task. Conversely, a more expensive first attempt may succeed more often.
Define a useful result in terms your application can check: for example, a correct answer, valid structured output, a completed tool action or approval by a reviewer. Apply the same definition to every model and routing policy in the comparison.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Count the entire path needed to produce the result: initial calls, retries, fallbacks, escalations and verification calls. Include the input, output and cache-token charges that actually apply to your account. If tools or orchestration have meaningful costs, say whether they are included. Report success rate and latency alongside the ratio; otherwise, a low cost per success can hide a high failure rate, and a cheap but slow route can look better than it is.
What Cloudflare Auto Router does
Cloudflare documents Auto Router as a feature of AI Gateway that selects a model for each request. Its eligibility stage excludes models that cannot handle the request’s format or input type and takes account of credentials, billing configuration, spend limits and provider health. It then estimates the task type and difficulty and scores candidates by expected quality relative to cost. The router tries its highest-ranked candidate first and can fall back if a provider cannot serve the request. See Cloudflare’s Auto Router documentation, last updated October 2, 2026.

Sessions, model switching and cache reuse
For multi-turn conversations, a session ID can keep a model for a turn and preserve prompt-cache reuse. Auto Router may still switch models between turns when its expected benefit outweighs the cost of losing cache reuse. Without a session ID, separate requests in the same conversation may be routed to different models. That behavior matters when evaluating long agentic workflows: include cache reads and any cost of rewriting context after a switch in the measured workload.
What Cloudflare’s published results show—and do not show
In its September 30, 2026 announcement, Cloudflare described Auto Router as a public beta and said early internal use had cut costs by “up to 30%” compared with using only frontier models. That is Cloudflare’s report about its own use, not a promised saving for other accounts or workloads. The announcement also explains that lower token prices do not always produce lower-cost outcomes because a model may use more tokens to complete a task. Cloudflare describes its routing objective in terms of predicted trajectory cost, weighing expected quality against input and output token prices.

Cloudflare also published results from an internal general-knowledge benchmark using simulated workspace tools for email, calendars, Slack, files, travel and finance. The benchmark covered 97 tasks, with three samples per model per task, for 291 trials per system. Cloudflare evaluated whether a trial produced a verifiable answer or completed an action.
| System in Cloudflare’s benchmark | Successful trials | Success rate | Total cost | Cost per success |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Auto Router | 252/291 | 86.6% | $2.10 | $0.0084 |
| Anthropic Claude Opus 5.5 | 281/291 | 96.6% | $5.91 | $0.0210 |
| OpenAI GPT-6 Sol | 245/291 | 84.2% | $2.64 | $0.0108 |
These are figures Cloudflare reported for its internal 2026 benchmark; they are not independently reproduced measurements or results for a reader’s own tasks and prices. In that benchmark, Auto Router had the lowest reported cost per success among the three entries, but its reported success rate was below Claude Opus 5.5’s. That trade-off is visible only when cost and quality are considered together.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to run a fair cost-per-result evaluation
- Write the acceptance rule first. Define what counts as a pass for each task, such as a correct answer, schema-valid output or verified action. Make the rule objective where possible, and use the same evaluator for every configuration.
- Build a representative task set. Use realistic examples from your application, including difficult and failure-prone cases. Keep the same inputs and task mix across the fixed-model and routing configurations. Record the task set and acceptance rules so a later test can be compared with it.
- Choose the configurations and check eligibility. Compare the Auto Router setup you intend to deploy with the fixed-model or other routing policies you are considering. Confirm supported API format and input types, credentials, billing configuration, spend limits, provider health and candidate controls. Because the pool is managed and can change, record the eligible candidates and test date.
- Run under matched conditions. Keep prompts, tools, context, sampling settings, concurrency and workload volume consistent. For multi-turn tests, use the session behavior you expect in production; if you plan to use session IDs, use them consistently. Avoid giving one configuration extra retries or verification unless those calls are counted in its cost.
- Capture every call and outcome. Log the task, selected model where observable, success or failure, latency, tokens and applicable charges for each attempt, retry, fallback, escalation and verification call. Include cache-token charges and tool or orchestration costs if your chosen metric includes them.
- Calculate the metrics separately. Sum included charges across the workload, then divide by the number of accepted results. Also calculate success rate as accepted results divided by attempted tasks, and report at least median latency and a tail measure such as the 95th percentile when your sample supports it. Keep failed tasks visible rather than dropping their costs.
- Repeat and inspect meaningful differences. Use enough samples to capture variation in task difficulty and provider behavior. Compare the same task-level results across configurations, inspect failure types as well as averages, and rerun when model availability, prices or routing behavior changes materially.
For each result, state what the denominator means and what costs are included. For example, a ratio that includes model charges but excludes external tools is useful only if that boundary is explicit; it is not the full cost of operating the workflow.
How to interpret the trade-offs
- Cost versus success: A lower cost per accepted result may still be unacceptable if the success rate falls below your application’s threshold. Set the quality floor before choosing a winner.
- Latency versus cost: A route that saves money but misses response-time requirements is not useful for a latency-sensitive application. Examine tail latency as well as the median, especially for workflows with fallbacks or multiple calls.
- Retries and fallbacks: A fallback can improve completion when a provider cannot serve a request, but the extra attempts affect both latency and total cost. Measure the full route rather than only the final successful call.
- Session consistency and cache: Model switching can change behavior across turns and affect prompt-cache reuse. Test with the session pattern and context lengths your application actually uses.
- Input and API compatibility: A candidate is not a practical option if it cannot handle the request’s modality or format. Verify current support and allowed-model or allowed-provider controls against the live documentation.

Use the benchmark as context, not a forecast
Cloudflare’s numbers are useful as an example of why success and cost belong in the same comparison: the cheapest reported cost per success did not come with the highest success rate. The benchmark’s simulated workspace tasks, sample design, provider prices and internal setup may differ substantially from an application’s workload. The most decision-useful result is therefore the one produced by applying a fixed acceptance rule and matched conditions to representative tasks from the application itself.
