A cloud storage gateway connects applications to data held in cloud storage through familiar interfaces such as file shares, block volumes, or virtual tape. It may cache data locally and manage transfers, but it is an access and integration layer—not the cloud storage repository itself.
How a cloud storage gateway works
A gateway sits between an application or user and a cloud storage service. On the application side, it presents an interface the workload can use; on the cloud side, it communicates with the provider’s storage backend and transfers or maps data according to that implementation.
Some gateways cache recently accessed data locally, which can reduce latency for those accesses. Cache behavior and what happens when data is not cached depend on the specific product and configuration. For example, Amazon S3 File Gateway presents file shares to clients over NFS or SMB, maps files to S3 objects, and uploads changes asynchronously. That mapping matters: object storage and a conventional filesystem do not necessarily behave the same way. In AWS’s implementation, renaming a file or folder can replace objects, and storage-class retrieval or early-deletion fees may apply in some cases. Common gateway patterns
Gateway categories describe the interface and workflow exposed to applications. AWS groups its Storage Gateway offerings into file, volume, and tape types; other providers and architectures may use different categories. AWS Storage Gateway overview
File gateway
A file gateway presents cloud-backed shared folders through protocols such as NFS or SMB. It can support workflows such as backup, archiving, data migration, or extending access to files without requiring applications to interact with object-storage APIs directly. A tape gateway presents virtual tape workflows for backup and archiving, offering a cloud-backed alternative to managing physical tapes. AWS includes tape gateway in its product family, and Microsoft describes the pattern as cloud-based virtual tape replacing physical tape. Filesystem adapter for object storage
A filesystem adapter can mount an object-storage bucket so applications can use filesystem-style paths. Google Cloud Storage FUSE is an example, but it is not the same as a fully conventional local filesystem: Google says it is not POSIX-compliant and does not support file locking or file patching. What to check before choosing one
A gateway’s familiar interface does not guarantee that every application will work as it would with local storage. Evaluate the product against the workload’s actual requirements:

- Interface and compatibility: Confirm that the gateway supports the required protocol or access pattern—such as NFS, SMB, block storage, tape, or a filesystem adapter—and that the application supports it.
- Filesystem behavior: Check requirements for POSIX semantics, locking, patching, rename behavior, and consistency. Object-backed file access may translate operations differently from a native filesystem.
- Cache and network: Understand what is cached, how much local capacity is needed, how uncached data is accessed, and how the workload behaves during network interruptions.
- Costs: Check transfer, retrieval, and storage-class charges. Operations that look like ordinary file changes can have different cost consequences in some implementations.
- Deployment and operations: Verify supported deployment environments and determine who is responsible for the gateway host, updates, monitoring, and recovery procedures.
- Access controls and security: Confirm how identities, permissions, and data protections are configured across the application-facing layer and cloud backend.
- Recovery objectives: Make sure the design meets required recovery time and recovery point objectives, including what happens if the gateway or its local cache is unavailable.
Security responsibilities are shared and vary with the service, data sensitivity, organizational requirements, and applicable laws and regulations. A gateway by itself does not establish that a deployment is compliant. AWS shared responsibility model
Cloud storage gateway vs. cloud storage
Cloud storage is where the data is stored; a gateway is the layer that lets applications reach or use that storage through another interface. Depending on the implementation, the gateway can translate protocols, map files or volumes to cloud-backed data, cache recent content, and coordinate transfers. Its role and behavior are product-specific, so confirm that the chosen interface and semantics match the workload rather than assuming a mount behaves exactly like local storage.
