The Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) is a not-for-profit cybersecurity organization that develops cloud-security guidance and frameworks, supports assurance programs, and provides education. It is an industry resource organization—not a cloud provider or a regulator. CSA’s current work also covers AI and Zero Trust.
What does CSA stand for?
CSA stands for Cloud Security Alliance. The organization brings together technical experts, security practitioners, associations, governments, local chapters, and corporate members. Its current About page describes its approach as volunteer-driven research, standards, and vendor-neutral education focused on practical cybersecurity implementation.
CSA’s stated mission has also been expressed in cloud-specific terms. In a June 4, 2024 press release, the organization said: “The Cloud Security Alliance is a not-for-profit organization with a mission to promote the use of best practices for providing security assurance within Cloud Computing, and to provide education on the uses of Cloud Computing to help secure all other forms of computing.” Cloud Security Alliance press release
What does the Cloud Security Alliance do?
CSA helps organizations understand and apply security practices through research, frameworks, assurance resources, and training. Its work is intended to inform cloud adopters and security teams; it does not operate cloud infrastructure or regulate cloud providers.
#1 Best Overall
- Research and guidance: CSA publishes material to help organizations plan and secure cloud environments.
- Frameworks: It develops structured resources such as the Cloud Controls Matrix (CCM), which organizes cloud-security controls.
- Assurance: Its Security, Trust, Assurance, and Risk (STAR) program provides an assurance ecosystem for cloud security.
- Education: It offers learning resources and training, including the Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge (CCSK) certification exam.
How do CSA’s main cloud-security resources differ?
CSA’s resources serve different purposes: guidance helps readers understand security practices, the CCM helps teams organize controls, and STAR addresses assurance.
| Resource | Purpose | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Security Guidance | Expert-developed best practices for securing cloud environments. | Learn how cloud architecture, shared responsibility, workloads, data, and other security areas fit together. |
| Cloud Controls Matrix (CCM) | A cloud-security controls framework. | Structure or review controls relevant to cloud security. |
| STAR | CSA’s Security, Trust, Assurance, and Risk program. | Engage with cloud-security assurance resources. |
| CCSK | CSA’s Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge learning and certification path. | Build and demonstrate knowledge of cloud security. |

The two resources therefore have related subject matter but are not interchangeable requirements.
Is the Cloud Security Alliance a certification body or regulator?
CSA provides education and certification exams, including the CCSK, and it runs the STAR assurance program. Those activities do not make it a regulator, cloud provider, or universal certifier of every cloud product. The specific role depends on the CSA program or resource being used.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can someone participate or learn through CSA?
CSA’s home page describes several participation and learning routes: access to research, working groups, training courses, and certification exams. The right starting point depends on whether you need practical guidance, want to contribute to community work, or are pursuing structured cloud-security learning. Cloud Security Alliance
