How do I remove the cloud icon from my desktop? First check where it appears: beside a file, in the taskbar or menu bar, or because your Desktop folder is being synced. The right fix depends on your computer and cloud service. A file badge is usually a status indicator; turning off Desktop backup changes syncing and may change where files appear.
Identify which cloud icon you want to remove
| Where you see it | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Beside a file or folder | A provider-specific sync or availability status, such as whether a file is stored locally or needs downloading. | Identify the service—OneDrive, iCloud Drive, or Dropbox—then check its status-symbol guide. Microsoft’s OneDrive icon guide, Apple’s iCloud Drive file guide, and Dropbox’s sync icon guide explain their respective indicators. |
| Windows taskbar, Mac menu bar, or Linux system tray | The cloud app’s control or status icon, not a file stored on the Desktop. | Use the operating system’s icon-visibility settings if you only want to hide it. Do not stop syncing unless that is your goal. Dropbox places its app icon in these system areas; OneDrive also uses the Windows notification area and Mac menu bar. Dropbox’s desktop icon guide and Microsoft’s OneDrive icon guide describe their roles. |
| Files appear on the Desktop across devices, or are stored in a cloud folder | Your Desktop may be included in a provider’s backup or sync feature. | Change the relevant Desktop backup setting only after deciding whether files should remain in the cloud, on this computer, or in both places. |
Cloud badges vary by provider and operating-system version. A cloud or check mark is not, by itself, a reason to delete a file.
Turn off OneDrive Desktop backup in Windows
Use this when you want to stop backing up the Windows Desktop folder—not just hide the OneDrive icon or remove a status badge.

- Select Help & Settings, then Settings.
- Open Sync and backup, then select Manage backup.
- Turn off the Desktop toggle and read the choice in the dialog before confirming.
Microsoft’s dialog offers a choice to keep files only in OneDrive, which removes them from the computer, or keep them only on the PC, which removes them from OneDrive. Inspect the files and choose deliberately. If a file is cloud-only and you need it on the PC, first right-click it and choose Always keep on this device, then allow it to download. Microsoft explains the setting and its file-location choices in Back up your folders with OneDrive. Microsoft says, “When you back up your Desktop folder, the items on your desktop roam with you to your other desktops where you’re running OneDrive.”

Stop syncing a particular OneDrive folder instead
In OneDrive settings, go to Account > Choose folders and clear the folder you no longer want on this computer. Microsoft says this removes the folder from the computer while leaving it available online. Some important PC folders, including Desktop, cannot be unchecked here; use Sync and backup > Manage backup for Desktop backup. See Microsoft’s folder-sync instructions.
Turn off iCloud Desktop and Documents on a Mac
Use this if iCloud Drive is syncing your Mac’s Desktop and Documents folders. On current macOS versions, open Apple menu > System Settings > your name > iCloud > Drive (or iCloud Drive), turn off Desktop & Documents Folders, then select Done. Menu names may vary by macOS version. Apple’s steps are in Set up iCloud Drive.

Turning off the feature does not move existing cloud files into the newly created local Desktop and Documents folders. Apple says those files stay in iCloud Drive, while new local Desktop and Documents folders in your Mac’s home folder are initially empty. To put selected files back on the Mac, move them from iCloud Drive to the local folders yourself. Apple also describes an iCloud Drive (Archive) location for keeping a local copy when iCloud Drive is turned off or you sign out.
Understand iCloud file badges before changing anything
A cloud icon beside an iCloud Drive item indicates its availability state; downloading it or choosing Remove Download changes the local-copy state, not whether the file exists in iCloud. Deleting a file from Desktop or Documents while those folders use iCloud Drive deletes it across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple says deleted items remain in Recently Deleted for 30 days. Check Apple’s guide to iCloud Drive files for the symbols and file controls. Do not delete a file just to clear its badge.

Turn off OneDrive Desktop backup on a Mac
If OneDrive—not iCloud—is backing up the Mac’s Desktop, select the OneDrive cloud in the menu bar, select the three dots, then open Preferences > Backup > Manage backup > Stop backup. Microsoft says files already backed up stay in the OneDrive folder and may no longer appear in the device’s Desktop folder. To have them on the local Desktop, move the desired files from OneDrive back to that folder. See Microsoft’s OneDrive backup guidance.
Hide the app icon without changing sync
If the icon is in a taskbar, menu bar, or system tray, hiding or relocating it is different from pausing sync, unlinking an account, or uninstalling the app. The exact visibility controls depend on the operating-system and app version. Identify the computer and check that system’s taskbar or menu-bar settings; avoid quitting or removing the app if your only goal is to hide its icon. Dropbox documents where its icon appears in its desktop app guide, while Microsoft describes OneDrive’s system icons in its OneDrive icon guide.

Stopping sync, unlinking, and uninstalling are different
Pausing or quitting OneDrive temporarily stops activity; unlinking the PC disconnects its account; uninstalling removes the app. None is the same as hiding an icon while preserving the current sync arrangement, and none should be used as a shortcut for removing a file badge. Microsoft lists these separate options in its OneDrive stop, unlink, and uninstall guidance.
