“Cloud connected” means a user, device, application, or system has a network path to cloud-hosted services or can exchange data with other resources there. The internet is a common route, but private links, VPNs, and provider networks can carry some traffic instead. The connection is what lets people and systems reach cloud resources; it is not the same thing as cloud computing itself.

What does “cloud connected” mean?

Cloud connectivity is the network path that lets a user, application, device, or system reach a cloud service or exchange data with another resource. For example, a person might use an internet connection to open a cloud-hosted application, while a company links its data center to cloud workloads.

Cloud computing is the delivery of resources such as computing power, storage, databases, applications, and networking on demand through a cloud platform. Cloud networking concerns how employees, applications, and resources connect and communicate. In short, cloud computing provides the resources; networking provides routes and controls for reaching and connecting them. AWS explains cloud computing, while its cloud networking overview describes the network side.

Why does connectivity matter?

Cloud services run on remote infrastructure, so users and systems need a network path to access them and exchange data. The network design also determines how cloud workloads communicate with one another, with systems that remain on-premises, and with resources in other cloud environments. AWS groups common connectivity needs around internet access, connections within a cloud environment, hybrid and multi-cloud links, and remote workforce access in its connectivity guidance.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Cloud networking can use software-defined components managed through a cloud platform rather than relying only on manually configured physical network equipment. AWS lists streamlined management, faster provisioning, scaling, monitoring, and support for hybrid or multi-cloud environments among potential benefits. These are possible outcomes, not guarantees: they depend on the design, configuration, workload, and operational practices.

How cloud resources connect

Internet access

A user can reach a public cloud service over an ordinary internet connection. For a household, the local path may include Wi-Fi and a router, but the cloud service itself is hosted by the provider. The available evidence does not establish a need to buy a special router to use cloud services.

  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

VPN connections

A virtual private network (VPN) can create an encrypted overlay across an internet path, connecting a user or network to another network environment. It provides a way to link locations or systems without implying that the underlying traffic avoids the public internet. AWS describes VPNs among the connectivity options for cloud environments in its cloud connectivity guidance.

Private links and provider networks

Some cloud-to-cloud, cloud-to-site, or partner traffic can use dedicated physical connections or provider networks rather than the public internet. Google Cloud says Interconnect traffic between connected networks does not traverse the public internet and takes fewer hops. Connection types, capacities, and availability depend on location and provider; fewer hops do not establish a universal performance guarantee. See Google Cloud’s Interconnect overview.

NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 6 Router R6700AX, Up to 1,500 sq ft, 1.8 Gbps
  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Which cloud networking approach fits?

Approach How it works Typical trade-off
Public cloud networking Network resources are provisioned through a shared public cloud platform. Can be quick to provision, but network design and security configuration remain important.
Private cloud networking Resources or traffic are dedicated to one organization. Offers more isolation and control, with corresponding management responsibilities.
Hybrid cloud networking Connects public or private cloud resources with on-premises systems. Useful when migration is staged or some systems need to remain local; integration must be managed.
Multi-cloud networking Connects environments hosted by multiple cloud providers. Can offer flexibility, while increasing coordination and policy complexity.
VPN Uses an encrypted overlay to link users or networks, often across the internet. Can connect distinct environments without requiring a dedicated physical link.
Private interconnect Uses a dedicated or partner connection for selected routes. May avoid public-internet transit for those routes, but supported capacity and availability vary by location and provider.

These approaches are not always mutually exclusive. An organization might use internet access for public-facing services, a VPN for remote users, and a private interconnect for selected traffic between a data center and cloud resources.

What to consider when choosing a connection

There is no universally best path. AWS notes that connectivity patterns shape cost, latency, security boundaries, and operational ownership. Compare the options against the actual workload and operating model:

  • Security and isolation: Decide which systems or traffic need separation and what controls will enforce that boundary.
  • Latency and bandwidth: Consider the communication patterns and capacity the workload requires; do not assume a dedicated link is automatically faster.
  • Resilience: Identify what happens if a route, connection, or provider service becomes unavailable.
  • Cost: Account for connection and data-transfer charges alongside the cost of operating the network. Private connectivity may reduce unnecessary transfer costs in some configurations, but savings are not universal.
  • Availability: Check which connection types and capacities are offered for the relevant locations and providers.
  • Operational ownership: Establish who configures, monitors, secures, and troubleshoots each part of the path.
  • Integration effort: Hybrid and multi-cloud setups can require coordination across existing systems, provider platforms, and network policies.

Does all cloud traffic use the public internet?

No. Internet connectivity is common, but VPNs, provider backbones, and dedicated physical connections can carry particular routes. A VPN may encrypt traffic while still using the internet underneath; a private interconnect can provide a separate path for the networks it joins. The appropriate option depends on the traffic, locations, design, and requirements—not simply on whether a service is described as cloud-based.
