There is no universal best cloud computer for AI agents: the right fit depends on whether you need a repository-linked development workspace or an isolated, programmable environment for agent code. GitHub Codespaces and Replit are cloud development environments; E2B and Daytona describe agent-oriented execution sandboxes. Their security, performance, and prices cannot be ranked fairly from the available product information alone.

What counts as a cloud computer for an AI agent?

The phrase can mean several different things. A cloud development workspace gives a person or agent a hosted place to edit and run a project. An agent sandbox is a programmatically managed runtime intended to execute generated code or support computer-use tasks. Those categories overlap in some workflows, but they are not interchangeable: compare the environment’s purpose, controls, persistence, and integration model before comparing providers.

  • Repository-linked workspace: useful when an agent needs to work inside a familiar project setup and development workflow.
  • Agent execution sandbox: useful when a product needs to create, control, and dispose of environments through an API or SDK.
  • Browser-based IDE: useful when the priority is an approachable online coding environment, with agent automation and isolation evaluated separately.

Which cloud computer fits your use case?

Service What the provider describes Potential starting point Verify before adopting
GitHub Codespaces Cloud-hosted, repository-configurable development environments, accessed through a browser or IDE. Agent work closely tied to GitHub repositories and dev-container workflows. Current included quota, machine sizes, idle and retention behavior, organization billing, secrets, and network controls.
E2B An isolated Linux microVM for each agent session, with code execution, desktop use, network policies, persistent storage, and lifecycle controls. Product teams embedding programmable code execution or computer use for agents. Current pricing, regions, limits, security documentation, and operational requirements for BYOC.
Daytona Agent-oriented sandboxes with SDK, API, and CLI access, process and filesystem operations, and stateful snapshots. Teams that need programmatic agent environments and persisted state. Current documentation, support and deployment options, billing, isolation details, and service terms. Its public repository says core development moved to a private codebase in June 2026.
Replit A browser-based cloud development environment with framework support and automatic package installation. Individuals or teams seeking an accessible online coding workspace. Whether current agent and runtime features meet the required automation and isolation model, plus current pricing and limits.

How do you run an AI coding agent in the cloud?

Start by deciding whether the agent needs a complete project workspace or a disposable execution runtime. Then test a representative workflow: provision the environment, install or access dependencies, run the agent’s commands, retain or remove files as required, and shut down the environment. The appropriate implementation details depend on the service and the agent harness; the product descriptions do not establish a single setup path that applies to all four.

For a GitHub-centered development workflow

GitHub defines a codespace as a development environment hosted in the cloud and supports repository-level dev container configuration for repeatable setups. Its remote development container uses Linux—Ubuntu by default, with the option to configure another Linux distribution. Windows and macOS are not supported as operating systems for the remote development container. See GitHub Codespaces and the Codespaces documentation.

For an API-managed agent runtime

E2B says its environments support command and code execution, a PTY and full desktop, policy-controlled network ingress and egress, persistent files and buckets, and pause, resume, snapshot, and fork operations. The provider says environments can run in its cloud or in a customer’s AWS, GCP, or Azure account. These are provider descriptions, not independent validation of the security model or performance. See E2B.

Daytona’s public repository describes isolated computers with their own kernel, filesystem, network stack, and allocated compute and storage, plus SDK/API/CLI access and stateful snapshots. The repository states: “As of June 2026, Daytona’s core development has moved to a private codebase.” It also says the public repository is no longer maintained and will receive no further updates, fixes, or releases. The official product site remains available; verify its current documentation rather than relying on the public repository for implementation decisions. For a browser-based coding workspace

Replit describes a browser-based development environment with framework support and automatic package installation. The reviewed product description does not establish an API-first sandbox model or isolation guarantees equivalent to a dedicated agent runtime. Confirm that its current capabilities fit your intended automation and threat model. See Replit’s cloud development environment.

What should you compare before choosing?

  • Environment type: Is the service a developer workspace, an agent runtime, or both for the exact workflow you need?
  • Isolation boundary: What is isolated, from what, and under which threat model? Similar terms such as “isolated” or “secure” do not prove that providers offer equivalent protections.
  • Network and secrets: Can you restrict outbound connections, control access to credentials, and prevent untrusted code from reaching sensitive services?
  • Persistence and cleanup: Determine what survives between runs, how snapshots work, and how to delete files or environments when a task ends.
  • Integration and operations: Check the agent-facing API or CLI, environment provisioning, concurrency limits, support, and who manages upgrades and infrastructure.
  • Data location and deployment: If execution must happen in an approved cloud account or region, confirm the current deployment options and their operating requirements.
  • Billing model: Estimate a representative run including compute time, idle time, storage, concurrency, and data transfer. Quotas and billing units differ, so a headline price alone may not be comparable.

How should you evaluate cost, security, and performance?

The available product descriptions do not support an apples-to-apples ranking of current prices, performance, or security. Check each provider’s current pricing, regional availability, limits, and security documentation against the same workload and requirements. For a meaningful cost estimate, include active and idle time, storage, expected concurrency, and data transfer rather than comparing unlike billing units.

Security statements in these product descriptions come from the providers. The information here does not establish a shared threat model, independent audit, or common breach-history comparison. Before running untrusted code, ask how the environment is isolated, how network access and secrets are controlled, whether state can be reliably removed, and whether deployment meets your organization’s data-location rules.

What is the best cloud environment for an AI agent?

Choose Codespaces when the main requirement is a cloud-hosted, repository-configurable development environment; consider Replit for a browser-based coding workspace. Consider E2B or Daytona when you need a programmatically managed environment designed for agent execution, then validate each provider’s current controls, deployment model, and terms. The product information available here does not establish a single winner across those distinct use cases.
