ClickFix is not a single virus. It is a social-engineering attack in which a fake error, CAPTCHA, browser check, document warning, or blue-screen page persuades you to copy and run an attacker-controlled command. The page may silently put that command in your clipboard, then tell you to press Win+R, open PowerShell or another terminal, paste, and press Enter. That one act of “fixing” the page can install an infostealer, remote-access trojan, ransomware, or other malware.

What ClickFix malware means

“ClickFix” describes the delivery technique, not one malware family. Attackers manufacture a familiar problem and offer a fake remedy that requires the victim to execute text locally. MITRE ATT&CK classifies the behavior as T1204.004 User Execution: Malicious Copy and Paste. The command may be obfuscated so its purpose is hard to recognize.

Early campaigns copied Google “Aw, Snap!” crash pages and missing Word Online extensions. More recent lures imitate Google reCAPTCHA, Cloudflare Turnstile, browser updates, OneDrive, Google Meet, and Windows blue-screen errors. Microsoft documented Storm-1607 activity from March through June 2024 using HTML attachments and DarkGate, followed by URL campaigns that used compromised sites and traffic-direction systems.

The important distinction is that a legitimate CAPTCHA or browser error never needs you to paste an unexplained shell command. A page that asks you to open Run, PowerShell, Command Prompt, or Terminal is asking you to leave the browser’s safety boundary and execute code with your own permissions.

How a ClickFix attack works

  1. Arrival: You reach the lure through a phishing email, malicious advertisement, compromised website, malicious URL, or an HTML attachment. Microsoft lists phishing, malvertising, and compromised or malicious websites as common entry routes.
  2. Trust cue: The page copies a brand and workflow you already recognize: “Verify you are human,” repair a Word document, enable a browser extension, install an update, or recover from a supposed BSoD. HHS documented fake Word errors and an August 2024 Google Meet campaign aimed at both Windows and macOS users.
  3. Clipboard manipulation: Clicking “How to fix,” “Fix it,” or a human-verification control can invoke JavaScript’s navigator.clipboard.writeText API. The page writes the attacker’s command to the clipboard without showing you the complete text.
  4. User execution: Instructions typically say to open Windows Run or a terminal, press Ctrl+V, and press Enter. The Cyber Security Agency (CSA) calls this sequence “pastejacking.”
  5. Payload and persistence: The command can download scripts, invoke PowerShell, create scheduled tasks or startup entries, perform system reconnaissance, contact command-and-control servers, and launch a final payload. Microsoft’s Lampion case study describes this as a multi-stage chain rather than a single download.

The technique is effective because the user, not the browser, performs the final execution. MITRE notes that this can bypass email filtering, browser sandboxing, and controls aimed at blocking malicious files downloaded in the usual way.

What can be installed after the paste

ClickFix is a delivery wrapper for many kinds of malware. ESET reports infostealers, ransomware, remote-access trojans, cryptominers, post-exploitation tools, and custom malware. Named examples in the cited reporting include DarkGate, Lumma Stealer, VidarStealer, StealC, Danabot, AsyncRAT, VenomRAT, NetSupport RAT, Havoc, Cobalt Strike, and Interlock ransomware. CSA separately lists DCRAT, NetSupport RAT, Latrodectus, and Lumma Stealer.

  • Credential and session theft: infostealers can target browser passwords, cookies, tokens, cryptocurrency wallets, and saved form data.
  • Remote control: remote-access trojans can let an operator view the desktop, run commands, install more tools, or use the machine as a foothold.
  • Data theft and extortion: operators may archive documents and send them to command-and-control infrastructure before deploying ransomware.
  • Persistence and spread: scheduled tasks, startup entries, stolen credentials, privilege escalation, and lateral movement can turn one workstation compromise into an organizational incident.
  • Resource abuse: cryptominers consume CPU and electricity while the attacker monetizes the victim’s hardware.

Because the final payload varies, a clean-looking desktop does not prove that nothing happened. A short-lived command can steal a browser session even if no obvious program remains installed.

How common is ClickFix?

Telemetry shows rapid growth, but the figures are not a universal infection count. ESET recorded a 517% increase in HTML/FakeCaptcha detections from the second half of 2024 to the first half of 2025; those detections represented nearly 8% of all attacks blocked by ESET in the first half of 2025. HHS reported that TA571 sent more than 100,000 email messages to thousands of organizations worldwide in 2024. ESET’s geographic breakdown attributed 23% of detections to Japan, 6% to Peru, and more than 5% each to Poland, Spain, and Slovakia.

These are vendor and government telemetry snapshots. They indicate the scale of observed campaigns, not the total number of ClickFix attempts or infections across every country and security product.

Recognition checklist: stop before you paste

  • A web page tells you to open Win+R, PowerShell, Command Prompt, Windows Terminal, or a shell.
  • A CAPTCHA or “Verify you are human” step requires copying or pasting a command instead of clicking images, solving a puzzle, or using an accessibility alternative.
  • A browser, Word, OneDrive, Google Meet, or Cloudflare-looking error offers an “Auto-fix,” “Fix it,” or “How to fix” button that leads to a terminal.
  • The page tells you to paste text you did not deliberately copy, especially text that begins with a shell name or contains a long encoded string.
  • The instructions ask you to disable antivirus, SmartScreen, endpoint protection, or other security controls.
  • The prompt appeared after an unsolicited email, advertisement, redirect, shortened URL, or an unfamiliar site.

Do not trust a lock icon or convincing logo as proof of safety. Attackers can place the same script on a legitimate but compromised site, and a valid HTTPS connection only encrypts the connection to that site.

What to do if you have not run the command

  1. Do not paste or press Enter. If you clicked a button and the clipboard changed, treat its contents as hostile.
  2. Close the tab. If the browser is unresponsive, close the browser process rather than following on-screen “recovery” instructions.
  3. Report the lure. Send the message, URL, advertisement, or attachment to your organization’s security team or the relevant service’s abuse channel. Preserve the URL and a screenshot if doing so does not require interacting with the page again.
  4. Restore your clipboard. Copy known-safe text, such as a short sentence, so the malicious command is no longer waiting to be pasted into another window.
  5. Warn people who may have received the same message. In a workplace, reporting the campaign lets administrators block the URL, sender, attachment hash, or related domains.

What to do if you ran it

Act as though the device and any credentials used on it may be compromised. The exact response depends on whether it is a personal computer or a managed endpoint, but speed matters because infostealers can transmit data quickly.

  1. Isolate the device where practical. Disconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet and remove it from VPN and other networks. Do not reconnect merely to download a cleanup utility unless your incident-response team directs you.
  2. Contact IT or incident response immediately. Tell them the approximate time, the page or message that delivered the prompt, what you clicked, and whether you entered credentials afterward. Do not wipe the machine before responders can collect evidence if it belongs to an organization.
  3. Use a known-clean device to change passwords. Prioritize email, browser-synchronized accounts, VPN, financial services, cloud storage, and administrator accounts. Revoke active sessions and tokens where the service allows it, and enable multifactor authentication.
  4. Protect financial and identity accounts. Review recent transactions, recovery-email changes, new devices, forwarding rules, and unfamiliar payment beneficiaries. Contact your bank or identity provider through a number you already trust.
  5. Have the endpoint examined. Security staff may need to inspect scheduled tasks, startup entries, PowerShell history, browser stores, new local users, outbound connections, and signs of lateral movement. A routine antivirus scan is useful but does not by itself prove that stolen sessions were invalidated.

CSA warns that ClickFix campaigns can disable security tools. If protection has been turned off, do not simply re-enable it and assume the incident is over; treat the change as evidence for the responders.

Defenses for organizations

Effective protection has to address both the lure and the user-executed shell command. MITRE’s documented mitigations include application control, PowerShell Constrained Language Mode, network intrusion prevention, and restrictions on suspicious or unnecessary web content.

Control What it interrupts Operational focus
Web and email filtering Phishing messages, malicious URLs, HTML attachments, malvertising, and known compromised sites Block newly observed domains, inspect HTML attachments, and detonate links where policy permits.
Application control Unapproved interpreters, scripts, and downloaded payloads Allow only signed or approved binaries and scripts; use different rules for administrators and standard users.
PowerShell Constrained Language Mode High-risk PowerShell features used after the paste Apply through managed policy and monitor for attempts to bypass the restriction.
Endpoint detection and response Browser or email process leading to Run, PowerShell, CMD, or Terminal Alert on obfuscated one-liners, unusual parent-child process chains, scheduled-task creation, and outbound connections immediately afterward.
Network intrusion prevention and egress controls Command-and-control traffic and payload retrieval Restrict unnecessary outbound connections and inspect DNS, proxy, and TLS metadata according to policy.
User training and reporting The final copy-and-paste action Teach that no legitimate CAPTCHA requires a shell command; make reporting a suspicious page quick and non-punitive.

MITRE’s analytic pattern for T1204.004 is especially useful: look for a browser or email process that launches Run, PowerShell, Command Prompt, or Terminal and passes an obfuscated command. Correlate that event with clipboard-related activity, script downloads, persistence creation, and new external connections.

Windows, macOS, and Linux considerations

MITRE lists T1204.004 across Windows, macOS, and Linux. The visible instructions differ—Windows lures commonly use Run or PowerShell, while other systems may use Terminal—but the social-engineering principle is the same: a web page convinces the user to execute text in a local shell. HHS’s August 2024 Google Meet campaign demonstrates that ClickFix is not limited to Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Windows: Treat requests to use Win+R, PowerShell, Command Prompt, or Windows Terminal as a high-confidence warning. Enterprise application control and PowerShell policy can substantially reduce the available execution paths.
  • macOS: A request to open Terminal and paste a command is the same behavioral red flag, even if the page uses a different brand or asks for a different shortcut.
  • Linux: A browser page asking you to open a terminal and paste a command is not a normal CAPTCHA or update flow. Least-privilege accounts and application allow-listing limit damage if a user complies.

Cross-platform coverage does not mean every payload runs everywhere. It means the manipulation pattern can be adapted to each desktop shell, so awareness and process monitoring must cover the operating systems your organization actually uses.

Why users fall for the fake fix

ClickFix borrows workflows people already perform: solving a CAPTCHA, repairing a document, enabling a browser feature, or installing an update. The page adds urgency and a reassuring visual design, then labels the dangerous action as a routine verification step. Proofpoint’s Threat Research Team described the tactic on November 18, 2024 as dialogue boxes containing fake errors that trick people into copying, pasting, and running malicious content themselves.

The command may be hidden behind a button, copied silently, or wrapped in encoding that makes it look like random text. Once the user presses Enter, security products must detect behavior that originated from a legitimate browser process and was authorized by the user. That is why technical controls and a simple rule—never paste an unexplained command from a web page—work best together.

Bottom line

ClickFix turns a fake error message into a user-assisted malware installation. If a “CAPTCHA,” browser warning, document repair, or update asks you to open a shell and paste text, stop. Close the page and report it. If you already executed the command, isolate the device, involve IT or incident response, and rotate exposed credentials from a clean device; do not rely on the absence of visible symptoms.
