Click and drag means pressing and holding a mouse button, moving the pointer while still holding it, and releasing the button when you reach the intended point. Depending on what you start on and where you move it, the gesture can move an item or select text.
How to click and drag
- Move the pointer over the item or text you want to work with.
- Press and hold the primary mouse button.
- Move the pointer without releasing the button.
- Release the button at the destination or endpoint.
For example, to move a movable item, start on an area of the item that the app lets you grab, hold the button, move it, and release it in the new position. To select text, start within the text and move through the portion you want selected before releasing. Exact behavior depends on the application and the target.
A mouse is not the only possible input device. A touchpad or another pointer device can support equivalent interactions when the device and software allow it.

| Gesture | What you do | Common result |
|---|---|---|
| Click | Press and release a button without moving the pointer. | Select or activate a target, depending on the interface. |
| Click and drag | Press and hold the button, move the pointer, then release. | Move or rearrange an item, or select a range of text. |
A click commonly takes effect when you release the button; moving away before release can cancel it. Holding the button as you move changes the gesture into a drag. The outcome also depends on the button, pointer position, target, and active interface. Microsoft’s Windows 7 mouse guidance describes these distinctions; it is legacy design guidance, not a guarantee that every current app behaves identically.

What does “drag and drop” mean?
“Drag and drop” describes a common use of dragging: hold an item, move it to a valid destination, and release it there. Depending on the app, this can move or copy the item. Not every target accepts a drop, so the result depends on the interface.
Can you click and drag with a touchpad?
Often, yes, if your device and software support dragging with the touchpad. The physical action differs from using a mouse, but the interaction still involves holding the pointer action while moving and releasing at the endpoint. Android’s desktop pointer guidance discusses click-and-drag behavior for pointer devices, including touchpads.

Why Microsoft sometimes says “drag” instead
In its terminology guidance, Microsoft defines “drag” as holding a button while moving the mouse and then releasing it. The same guide recommends using “drag” rather than “click and drag” in Microsoft-authored content; that is a style preference, while “click and drag” remains a widely understood way to describe the gesture. See Microsoft’s mouse terminology guide.
