“Text cache” is not a standard name for one setting shared by phones and apps. This guide uses it to mean browser cache: stored pieces of web pages that help them open faster on a later visit. If you mean cache inside a particular app, the steps and consequences depend on that app.
What clearing browser cache does
Clearing cache removes selected temporary browser files stored from websites. A browser uses cached items to avoid downloading them again on repeat visits; as Google Chrome Help explains, “The cache remembers parts of pages, like images, to help them open faster during your next visit.” Google’s Chrome Help
Removing those files can help when a site persistently loads incorrectly or displays outdated formatting, and it may reclaim some local storage. It is not a general-purpose way to speed up a whole device. The next visit to affected pages may take longer while the browser downloads needed content again.
Cache, cookies, and history are different
Chrome lists these as separate types of browsing data. Check the selected categories before confirming: clearing cache alone is not the same as deleting all browsing data. Google’s instructions for deleting Chrome browsing data

- Cache & Garbage Scanning
- Cache and Garbage Cleaning (InApp)
- Cache: Stored page content, such as images, that can be reused to load pages faster.
- Cookies and other site data: Data sites use to remember information. Removing it can reset some site preferences and may require you to sign in again.
- Browsing history: A record of pages visited. Deleting it does not mean the same thing as clearing cached files.
The exact effects depend on which categories you select. If your goal is to troubleshoot a page, avoid selecting other data types unless you intend to remove them.
When to try clearing cache
Consider it when a website has a persistent loading or display problem, or appears to be showing old content. Cache is only one possible cause: Google’s troubleshooting guidance also points to device, network, browser, and website issues. Google’s Chrome loading-error troubleshooting
- If one site is affected: Focus troubleshooting on that site and its stored data rather than wiping all browser data.
- If several unrelated sites fail: Also check your internet connection, browser, and device; clearing cache may not address the underlying issue.
There is no need to follow a routine clearing schedule based on the guidance cited here. Use it as a targeted troubleshooting step rather than a regular maintenance ritual.

Clear cache in Chrome on Android
- Open Chrome and open its Delete browsing data control. Menu placement and wording can vary by version.
- Choose the time range you want to affect.
- Review the data types selected. Select cache, and deselect cookies, history, or other categories if you do not want to remove them.
- Confirm the deletion.
Google’s current Android guidance describes the browser’s built-in control; check its Chrome browsing-data instructions if the labels or menu location differ on your version.
Will clearing cache delete text messages?
“Text cache” can also sound like stored text messages, but the browser-cache guidance above does not establish what happens when clearing data for every messaging app. Do not assume an app’s cache-clearing control is harmless to messages or other app data. Check that app’s official documentation and make sure important messages are backed up before changing its storage settings.
