To clear a Bose pairing list, you must remove the saved devices in two places: the Bose product and each phone, tablet, or computer that still lists it. First identify the model, because documented Bose headphones use a 10-second Power/Bluetooth hold while the SoundLink Plus speaker uses a 15-second Bluetooth-button hold. After the Bose product confirms that its list is cleared, use the source device’s Bluetooth settings to choose Forget, Unpair, or Delete, then pair again as a new device.

What clearing a Bose pairing list actually changes

A Bluetooth connection has two records. The Bose headphones or speaker stores previously paired devices in its internal memory, while your phone, tablet, or computer stores a corresponding Bose entry in its own Bluetooth settings. Clearing only one record can leave the old relationship intact.

  • Bose-side memory: this is the product’s stored list of devices it has paired with before.
  • Source-device memory: this is the Bose listing saved in Bluetooth settings on a phone, tablet, or computer.

When a Bose product keeps connecting to the wrong phone, the unwanted phone may still have Bluetooth enabled and may be recognized before the device you intend to use. A clean re-pair therefore requires both the Bose-side clear and removal of every Bose entry from the source devices you do not want it to use.

Identify the exact Bose model before pressing a button

Bose does not use one universal control sequence across its products. The documented examples differ by product type, control, hold duration, confirmation phrase, and stored-device capacity.

QuietComfort 35 II headphones Power/Bluetooth switch 10 seconds Voice prompt: “Mobile device list cleared.” Up to eight paired Bluetooth devices Not stated
SoundLink Plus portable speaker Bluetooth button 15 seconds Paired list is cleared Up to six devices Bose says paired devices can also be removed in the Bose app under product settings

The two 10-second headphone procedures are documented examples, not a guarantee that every Bose headphone uses the same control. If your model is not listed, use the instructions for that model rather than applying the SoundLink Plus timing or assuming a headphone switch layout.

The complete clear-and-repair workflow

  1. Identify the model. Read the product name on the headphones, speaker, packaging, or its Bose app entry. Match it to the model-specific instructions below.
  2. Clear the product’s internal list. Use the control and hold interval shown for your model. Keep holding until the product gives the documented confirmation or completes the clear operation.
  3. Remove Bose entries from source devices. Open Bluetooth settings on every phone, tablet, and computer that has used the product. Remove each Bose listing with the platform’s Forget, Unpair, Delete, or equivalent command. If duplicates appear, remove all of them.
  4. Put the Bose product into pairing mode. Turn Bluetooth back on if you temporarily disabled it, then activate pairing mode using the product’s normal control.
  5. Pair as a new device and test output. Select the ordinary headphones or speaker name, complete the pairing prompt, and confirm that audio is routed to the Bose product.

Do not treat the confirmation from step 2 as proof that the phone has forgotten the product. The two memories are independent, so step 3 remains necessary.

Headphone procedures

On-Ear Wireless

  1. Move the headphone control to the Bluetooth position.
  2. Hold it for the interval listed for On-Ear Wireless in the comparison table.
  3. Listen for the spoken confirmation, “Bluetooth device list cleared.” Release the control after that message.
  4. Continue with the source-device removal procedure so phones and computers no longer retain the old Bose entry.

The voice message is the useful checkpoint. If you release the control before hearing it, do not assume that the internal list was erased; repeat the operation and wait for the confirmation.

QuietComfort 35 II

  1. Locate the Power/Bluetooth switch.
  2. Hold the switch for the interval listed for QuietComfort 35 II in the table.
  3. Wait for the message, “Mobile device list cleared.”
  4. Forget the QuietComfort 35 II entry on each source device before starting a new pairing.

The QuietComfort 35 guide says these headphones can remember up to eight paired Bluetooth devices. If several people have used the headphones, clearing the internal list removes the accumulated history rather than just the most recent connection.

Other Bose headphones

Several Bose headphone manuals describe a similar 10-second hold and a spoken list-cleared confirmation, but the exact switch or button can vary. Do not substitute the QuietComfort 35 II or On-Ear Wireless control unless your model’s documentation identifies the same control. The safe pattern is to locate the model-specific Bluetooth or Power/Bluetooth control, hold for the documented interval, and wait for the spoken confirmation before moving to the phone or computer.

SoundLink Plus speaker procedure

  1. Turn on the SoundLink Plus.
  2. Press and hold the speaker’s Bluetooth button for the interval listed for SoundLink Plus in the table.
  3. Release the button after the paired-device list has been cleared.
  4. On the phone, tablet, or computer, delete every saved SoundLink Plus entry.
  5. Place the speaker in normal Bluetooth pairing mode and select it from the intended source device.

Bose also says the SoundLink Plus paired devices can be removed from the Bose app under the product’s settings. That app control is an additional route for this speaker; it does not change the need to remove stale entries from source-device Bluetooth settings when you are troubleshooting a failed or confused re-pair.

How to forget Bose on the phone, tablet, or computer

The label varies by operating system, but the operation is the same: open the device’s Bluetooth settings, select the Bose product, and remove the saved relationship.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Phone or tablet

  1. Open the system Bluetooth settings.
  2. Find the Bose headphones or speaker in the paired or saved-device list.
  3. Open that entry’s detail menu.
  4. Choose Forget, Unpair, Delete, or the equivalent option.
  5. Repeat for every Bose entry associated with the product. A second listing can represent an old record or a duplicate.

Computer

  1. Open the computer’s Bluetooth device list.
  2. Select the Bose product and use the operating system’s remove, forget, or unpair command.
  3. Check the full list for another Bose entry before closing settings.
  4. If the computer is the device that keeps taking over the connection, leave its Bluetooth disabled while you pair the Bose product with the intended source.

Bose support guidance uses the terms Forget, Unpair, and Delete for this removal step. The wording differs, but each command is intended to erase the source device’s saved pairing record.

Pair again without letting the wrong device take over

After both sides have been cleared, reduce the chance of an accidental connection:

  1. Temporarily turn off Bluetooth on nearby phones and computers that should not connect.
  2. Enable Bluetooth on the source you actually want to use.
  3. Put the Bose product into pairing mode.
  4. Select the normal Bose headphones or speaker entry, not an unfamiliar duplicate.
  5. Wait for the pairing confirmation, then play audio and check that the Bose product is selected as the output device.
  6. Re-enable Bluetooth on other devices only after the intended pairing works.

This sequence matters when a household has multiple phones or computers. Disabling the unwanted source removes the most common race in which the Bose product reconnects to a previously trusted device before the intended source finishes pairing.

Fix wrong-device connections and duplicate entries

The Bose product reconnects to the wrong phone

Disconnect or temporarily disable Bluetooth on the unwanted phone or computer. Then clear the Bose product’s internal list, remove the Bose entry from the intended source if it is stale, and pair again with only the intended source active. Once the new connection is confirmed, turn Bluetooth back on elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bose product appears twice

Open the source device’s complete Bluetooth list and remove every Bose listing for that product. Bose troubleshooting guidance specifically calls out duplicate entries, including entries prefixed with LE- where Bose identifies them as duplicates. Leaving one old record behind can make the next pairing appear to fail even though the product-side list was cleared.

There is no spoken “list cleared” message

Check that you are using the control assigned to your exact model and that you held it for the model’s documented interval. On the two documented headphone examples, the voice prompt is the confirmation that the operation completed. If you cannot obtain that confirmation, stop and recheck the model before trying a different button or timing.

The phone still shows Bose after the product was cleared

That is expected until you remove the source-device entry. Clearing the speaker or headphones does not automatically edit Bluetooth settings on a phone, tablet, or computer. Use the device’s Forget, Unpair, Delete, or equivalent command, then search again while the Bose product is in pairing mode.

Pairing succeeds but there is no sound

Confirm that the Bose product is selected as the active audio output after pairing. A successful Bluetooth relationship and the selected playback output are separate settings on many source devices, so verify output before repeating the clear procedure.

How many devices can remain in memory?

Stored-device limits explain why clearing can be useful after many people have used the same product.

Product Published memory limit Practical implication
QuietComfort 35 II Up to eight paired Bluetooth devices, according to the Bose guide A shared pair of headphones can accumulate several phones and computers before a full clear is appropriate.
SoundLink Plus Up to six devices, according to Bose’s current support information A speaker used by a household or small group can retain several former sources; clear the list when ownership or the intended source changes.
On-Ear Wireless Not stated in the cited owner’s guide Use the documented clear procedure rather than assuming a capacity based on another Bose model.

These figures describe the products named above. They should not be generalized to every Bose headphone or speaker.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using 10 seconds for every Bose product: SoundLink Plus uses a different documented interval and a different control.
  • Clearing only the headphones or speaker: the phone or computer can still retain its own Bose record.
  • Forgetting only the first duplicate: remove every Bose entry, including the duplicate form Bose identifies with an “LE-” prefix.
  • Pairing with all nearby devices enabled: an unwanted phone can reconnect first and make the new pairing look unsuccessful.
  • Releasing before the confirmation: on the documented headphone procedures, the spoken message is the completion signal.
  • Assuming an app option exists on every model: Bose specifically documents app-based device removal for SoundLink Plus; availability should not be presumed for other products.

A practical decision path

If you know the model

Use that model’s control and interval in the comparison table, wait for the product-side completion signal, forget all source-device entries, and pair with only the intended source active.

If you do not know the model

Do not guess from the shape of the controls. Read the product name first, because the documented headphone and speaker procedures use different controls and hold durations. Once identified, follow the corresponding branch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If several people share the product

Ask every regular user to remove the Bose entry from their phone or computer, or temporarily disable Bluetooth on those devices while you perform the reset. Otherwise a nearby source can reconnect immediately after the internal list is cleared.

If the product changes hands

Clear the Bose-side list, remove the product from the previous owner’s source devices, and complete a fresh pairing on the new owner’s device. This prevents the old source from remaining an active candidate.

Final verification checklist

  • The exact Bose model has been identified.
  • The correct model-specific control was used.
  • The product gave its documented clear confirmation or completed the SoundLink Plus clear operation.
  • Every Bose listing was removed from the relevant phones, tablets, and computers.
  • Duplicate entries, including Bose-identified “LE-” duplicates, were removed.
  • Nearby unwanted sources were disconnected or had Bluetooth temporarily disabled.
  • The Bose product was paired again from the intended source.
  • Audio output was checked after pairing.

Following those checks resolves the two causes that most often look like one problem: an uncleared list inside the Bose product and a stale Bluetooth record on the source device.
