Keep cables and adapters only when they serve a device you still use, store, or expect to reconnect. Clear out true duplicates and orphaned cords, but do not treat every older connector as obsolete: a printer, drive, projector, or retro device may still need one. Sort first, check power safety and compatibility, then follow your local electronics-recycling rules.
Start with the devices, not the cable drawer
Gather the cords and adapters, then match each one to a device that is currently in use or intentionally stored. If you cannot identify a compatible device or a likely use, and it is not a useful spare, it is a good candidate to let go. Keep a small number of known-good spares where they solve a real need; for example, a projector kept in storage may still justify its matching cable.
Do not use a fixed count as a purge target. The categories below are common candidates for removal when no compatible equipment remains, not a verified list of 15 distinct items.
Which cords and adapters are often safe to clear out?
Unmatched power adapters and excess power cords
Set aside wall adapters and power supplies that no longer match any device you own. Extra desktop-style power cords can also go if you already have enough compatible spares. Before discarding an adapter that looks unfamiliar, check the label and the equipment it might serve; similar-looking plugs do not guarantee compatible power.

Legacy video and audio cables
Coaxial, RCA, component-video, and S-Video cables may be unnecessary if none of your televisions, receivers, game systems, or other equipment uses them. Auxiliary audio cables and inexpensive wired headphones can be redundant too, but retain them if a device you use still relies on a wired audio connection.
A tape-deck adapter is unnecessary when no cassette player remains in use. Likewise, older iPhone and iPod cables—including 30-pin connectors—are candidates for removal only if you have no compatible device.
Older USB and phone cables
Redundant Mini-USB, Micro-USB, USB-B, and USB-A cables can take up space without adding value. Keep the specific cable needed by any retained older drive, printer, musical keyboard, or other peripheral. USB-C may replace some charging and data connections, but it does not make every older cable unnecessary.

When an old connector is still worth keeping
Older AV and data connectors are obsolete for many households, not universally useless. A cable may be the only practical link to retro equipment, legacy storage, or an older peripheral. Keep it when you can name the device it serves and have a reason to reconnect that device; otherwise, it is just an unidentified spare.
For data accessories, check both the connector and the function. A cable that supplies power may not support data transfer, and an adapter with the right-shaped plug may not provide the connection a drive or printer needs.

Check for damage before keeping or using a cord
Do not keep or use a cord with exposed conductors. The University of Chicago Environmental Health and Safety Fire Safety Policy says: “If damage extends beyond the outer layer of cord (i.e., if the conductor is exposed), then the extension cord shall be discarded.” That is the policy of that institution; it is not a universal rule covering every cable or jurisdiction. Follow applicable local safety guidance for other damage.

A USB-C power adapter or cable is not a universal substitute for a device’s original DC adapter. Some USB-C Power Delivery trigger cables offer adjustable voltage and interchangeable connector tips, but that does not mean they can power every older device. Do not rely on a generic USB-C cable alone.
- Read the device label or manual for its required voltage and power demand.
- Confirm the adapter can supply the required voltage and sufficient power; USB-C PD adapters may not offer every voltage a device needs.
- Match the device’s polarity and barrel-connector dimensions to the adapter and tip.
- Use a data-capable connection when the device needs data, not just power.
If you cannot verify every compatibility requirement, do not connect the replacement adapter. Use a known-compatible supply or ask a qualified technician to identify the requirements.

Recycle or discard cords according to local rules
Check your local electronics-recycling guidance before putting cords, power supplies, or adapters in any bin. Hawaii’s Department of Health includes cords, power supplies, and adapters designed to support electronic devices among the peripherals covered by its e-waste collection information. That guidance is Hawaii-specific; accepted items and drop-off locations vary elsewhere.
