CleanSpark and BitFuFu both reported lower bitcoin output in September 2026, while Canaan held production at its August level. CleanSpark’s decline was the largest in percentage terms; BitFuFu’s total fell because cloud-mining output dropped even as its self-mining operation improved. Canaan ended a three-month run of sequential declines.

On absolute output, CleanSpark remained the largest of the three. On month-over-month performance, Canaan was the only company without a decline; BitFuFu’s decrease was materially smaller than CleanSpark’s.
CleanSpark: the sharpest decline and a reporting change
CleanSpark mined 529 BTC in September, down from 593 BTC in August, a reduction of nearly 11%. Its bitcoin holdings ended the month at 13,530 BTC, compared with 13,703 BTC at the end of August.

The company disclosed two types of sales during the month: 2 BTC sold on spot markets and 700 BTC sold through call-option exercises at an average sale price of $72,928 per bitcoin. Those transactions help explain why its treasury balance fell even as the company continued producing bitcoin.

From monthly updates to quarterly reporting
CleanSpark said it will stop issuing monthly mining updates and move to quarterly reporting. The change accompanies a broader emphasis on data-center expansion rather than only month-to-month mining statistics.
The Block reported that CleanSpark launched a $2.276 billion senior secured note offering to fund construction of its Sandersville, Georgia, data-center campus. The company expects that campus to generate roughly $6.6 billion in revenue. Both figures are company expectations reported by The Block, not realized revenue or an independent forecast.

BitFuFu: lower total output despite stronger self-mining
BitFuFu produced 167 BTC in September, compared with 174 BTC in August, a decline of about 4%. The headline number hides a significant change in the sources of production.

Self-mining therefore improved, but the 17-BTC contraction in cloud mining more than offset that gain. BitFuFu’s month-end holdings nevertheless increased to 1,388 BTC from 1,373 BTC.

Risk around an Ethiopian site
BitFuFu also disclosed obstacles to its planned acquisition of an 80 MW mining site in Ethiopia. The issue involves a dispute between the site operator and local electricity suppliers. The company said it was considering canceling the transaction and recovering its investment.
The exposure is material: BitFuFu had already invested $4.1 million and deployed approximately 13,700 Bitmain Antminer S19 rigs at the project, according to The Block. Until the electricity-supply dispute is resolved, the acquisition represents an execution risk rather than dependable capacity for future production.

Canaan: flat output and a larger treasury
Canaan mined 44 BTC in September, exactly matching August. The result ended a three-month run of sequential monthly declines. Its bitcoin treasury rose to 1,875 BTC from 1,868 BTC.
Operating metrics
Canaan’s October 15, 2026, release listed 10.00 EH/s of non-joint-venture installed hashrate and 4.87 EH/s of joint-venture installed hashrate. It reported an average all-in power cost of US$0.043 per kilowatt-hour. These are the company’s disclosed September operating figures, not an industry-wide cost benchmark.

Heat reuse in the Nordics
Canaan said its 8 MW Nordic district-heating project is fully operational. Recovered computing heat is being delivered to approximately 2,800 homes, making energy reuse a visible part of the company’s infrastructure strategy. A separate Canadian greenhouse heat-recovery project was moving toward deployment but still required site inspections, so it was not yet operational.
Canaan chairman and CEO Nangeng Zhang said: “Bitcoin markets continued to demonstrate resilience in September, navigating macroeconomic and policy uncertainty while institutional participation remained steady.”
Which miner performed best in September?
The answer depends on the measure:
- Best month-over-month production result: Canaan, because its 44 BTC output was unchanged.
- Largest producer: CleanSpark, with 529 BTC despite its decline.
- Smallest percentage decline: BitFuFu, down about 4%, compared with CleanSpark’s nearly 11% drop.
- Strongest internal operating improvement: BitFuFu’s self-mining segment, which rose from 88 BTC to 98 BTC even though cloud mining fell sharply.
- Largest disclosed treasury: CleanSpark, with 13,530 BTC at September’s end.
The comparison also shows why production totals alone are incomplete. BitFuFu’s mix shifted toward self-mining, CleanSpark reduced its treasury through disclosed sales, and Canaan paired stable output with reported hashrate, power-cost and heat-reuse metrics.
What the September reports signal
September’s figures point to three different priorities. CleanSpark is moving capital and reporting attention toward large-scale data centers, with quarterly updates replacing monthly production disclosures. BitFuFu is trying to expand self-mining while managing cloud-mining volatility and a potentially costly Ethiopian project dispute. Canaan’s flat production came alongside a modest treasury increase and operating projects designed to reuse mining heat.
Future comparisons will therefore need to track more than BTC mined: treasury changes, sales, production mix, usable hashrate, energy costs and whether announced infrastructure reaches commercial operation will all affect how these companies perform.
