For most monitors, the best cleaner to start with is no liquid at all: use a clean, soft microfiber cloth. Wipe gently while the screen is off. If marks remain, use only a liquid the instructions for your exact monitor allow, applied sparingly to the cloth—not sprayed onto the screen. A microfiber cloth is the most useful first purchase; a special spray or kit is optional and model-dependent.
What is the best monitor cleaner?
A clean microfiber cloth is the best general-purpose choice because manufacturers including ASUS, Samsung Canada, and LG recommend a soft cloth or microfiber for screen cleaning. It removes dust and light smudges without requiring a chemical cleaner that might be incompatible with a screen coating.
There is no evidence here to rank cleaning-fluid brands or claim that one solution performs better than another. Choose by compatibility with your monitor, clear instructions for application, and whether you need liquid at all. For routine dust and light marks, start dry.
- Best basic pick: a clean, soft microfiber screen-cleaning cloth.
- Optional for permitted damp cleaning: distilled or purified water. ASUS and Samsung recommend it in their own guidance; it is not necessary for every cleaning.
- Conditional: a display cleaner or kit only if your monitor’s instructions explicitly allow that product type.
How to clean a monitor screen safely
- Check the instructions for your exact model. Cleaning guidance varies by manufacturer and product, especially for OLED and coated screens. Use the manual or the manufacturer’s support page for your monitor.
- Switch off and disconnect power if the manufacturer advises it. ASUS, Samsung, and LG include power-disconnection guidance. Follow the directions that apply to your device.
- Remove dust with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Use light pressure and let the cloth glide. Do not press hard or scrub.
- For marks that remain, dampen the cloth only if permitted. Use the small amount of liquid allowed by the instructions—ASUS and Samsung recommend distilled or purified water for their applicable guidance. The cloth should not be dripping.
- Wipe gently, then let the display dry completely. Samsung advises allowing the screen to dry fully before reconnecting power.
Never spray liquid directly onto the screen. ASUS, Samsung, and HP warn against direct application, which can let liquid seep into the display or cause damage. Apply permitted liquid to the cloth instead.

Can you use alcohol, glass cleaner, or paper towels?
Do not assume a household cleaner is safe for every screen. ASUS says to avoid alcohol- and ammonia-based cleaners because they may damage the coating. Samsung Canada warns against alcohol, solvents, and ammonia; LG’s US monitor guidance warns against alcohol and various detergents. Paper towels and rough materials are also poor choices: ASUS warns against paper products, and Samsung says paper towels or cloth towels can scratch or damage the screen.
Manufacturer instructions are not uniform. BenQ’s US FAQ describes using a soft cloth with IPA or water, while warning against ethanol, rubbing alcohol, and bleach. Philips’ OLED manual lists acetone-free LCD/LED screen cleaner among the options allowed for the cleaning method in that manual. These differences are a reason to check your own model’s guidance—not to treat any one manufacturer’s advice as universal.

What to buy—and what you can skip

You do not need to buy a special spray just to remove ordinary dust or light fingerprints. Begin with a dry cloth; consider a liquid only if marks remain and your monitor’s guidance allows it.
Why the exact monitor model matters
Screen coatings and manufacturer recommendations differ, so a cleaner that one brand allows may be unsuitable for another display. That is particularly important if you have an OLED screen or a coated panel. Treat the manufacturer’s manual or model-specific support page as the deciding authority, and do not infer that a cleaner is safe simply because it is labeled for screens.
