Start with your car’s owner’s manual, then use a gentle routine: remove loose dirt, clean cabin surfaces with material-appropriate methods, and wash paint with automotive products. Wax, coatings and specialty cleaners are optional—and may be wrong for matte paint or an existing treatment.
Check the finish and treatments before cleaning
Look in the owner’s manual for care instructions specific to your vehicle, then check whether it has matte or gloss paint and whether paint protection film, a coating or window tint has been installed. Follow the manual and the treatment maker’s aftercare instructions; generic detailing advice may not suit every finish or material.
Hyundai’s 2025 U.S. owner-manual guidance warns that matte paint needs different care from ordinary gloss paint. In particular, do not assume wax or polish is suitable: matte finishes can prohibit them. Hyundai’s 2025 U.S. owner manual provides vehicle-specific exterior-care guidance.

Clean the cabin from loose dirt to surface wiping
- Remove mats and loose debris. Shake out floor mats and vacuum crumbs, grit and dust before wiping. Grit dragged across trim or upholstery can scratch or abrade it.
- Wipe suitable surfaces gently. For surfaces the manual permits, use a soft microfiber cloth lightly dampened with water. If water is not enough, choose a mild cleaner intended for that material and test it first in a concealed spot.
- Keep liquid away from electronics. Never spray cleaner directly onto a display. Apply any permitted cleaner to the cloth, not the screen, and avoid letting liquid run into buttons, seams or other electronic components.
- Match upholstery care to the material. Vacuum fabric regularly and use a suitable upholstery cleaner for stains. Clean leather gently, address spills promptly and avoid soaking the seat. “Leather” and “leatherette” do not guarantee the same material or care instructions, so check the vehicle manual.
Hyundai’s 2025 U.S. owner manual and Kia’s 2026 regional owner-manual guidance describe interior precautions, but instructions can vary by model and market.

Wash the paint without grinding dirt into it
- Choose basic, paint-safe supplies. Use vehicle-specific shampoo with a clean automotive microfiber wash mitt or a soft sponge. A separate clean towel can be used for drying.
- Rinse and wash gently. Volkswagen recommends separate wash and rinse buckets, working from the top down and avoiding direct sunlight. Rinse the vehicle thoroughly.
- Dry with a clean, soft towel if desired. Do not dry-wipe dusty paint: loose grit can be dragged across the finish. Avoid household dish soap as a default and do not let strong detergent dry on the paint.
These steps follow Volkswagen’s August 2025 DIY detailing guidance. A gentle automotive shampoo and clean wash tools are a straightforward starting point; premium-priced products are not established as necessary by these care instructions.
Remove damaging contamination promptly
Insects, tar, tree sap, bird droppings and industrial pollution can damage paint if left on the surface, according to Hyundai’s 2025 U.S. owner manual. Use a paint-safe removal method and avoid scraping or aggressive rubbing, which can harm the finish. Follow the vehicle or treatment maker’s instructions if the car has a coating or film.

Use wax and protective treatments selectively
Hyundai says wax can help protect paint from contaminants and recommends applying it after washing and drying when water no longer beads. Volkswagen notes that using gentle shampoo can reduce the need to wax after every wash. These recommendations do not make waxing mandatory: matte paint may rule it out, and coatings or films can have their own aftercare requirements. Check the relevant instructions before applying wax or another protective product.

Routine washing removes surface dirt; paint correction uses polishing to address defects and carries a different risk. Volkswagen cautions that a machine polisher used incorrectly could scratch or chip paint or discolor it, and recommends consulting a dealer before attempting correction. Its August 2025 detailing article gives that warning as Volkswagen guidance, not as a statement by a named individual.
