To clean a refrigerator with baking soda, dissolve it in warm water, wipe the interior with a soft cloth or nonabrasive sponge, rinse with clean water, and dry everything thoroughly. The right dilution and rules for removable shelves vary by model, so check your refrigerator’s owner’s manual before you begin.
What to prepare before cleaning
- Your refrigerator’s owner’s manual, for model-specific cleaning and dishwasher instructions.
- Baking soda and warm water. Manufacturer guidance differs on the amount: GE’s general interior-cleaning directions call for one to two tablespoons per quart of water, while its odor-cleaning advice calls for one tablespoon per quart. Whirlpool recommends a baking soda solution for stubborn residue without setting one universal ratio. - A soft cloth or nonabrasive sponge. A soft brush can help reach seams and crevices.
- Clean water and a dry towel for rinsing and drying.
Clean the refrigerator interior step by step
- Check the manual and protect the food. Follow your model’s cleaning instructions. Empty the refrigerator and keep perishable food cold while you work. Unplug the appliance before cleaning if practical; if it remains powered, keep moisture away from switches, lights, and controls. Whirlpool’s cleaning guide also recommends checking the manual and emptying the refrigerator.
- Remove only permitted parts. Take out shelves, bins, and drawers only as the manual allows. Handle glass shelves carefully. If they are cold, let them warm before washing; GE warns that hot water on cold glass can cause breakage. GE Appliances’ interior-cleaning directions
- Mix the solution. Use warm water and the dilution specified by your manual. If it does not give a ratio, GE’s general guidance is one to two tablespoons of baking soda per quart of water; GE’s odor guidance instead says one tablespoon per quart. - Wipe gently. Use a soft cloth or nonabrasive sponge on interior walls and any removable parts that the manual permits you to clean. For seams, use a soft brush rather than abrasive scrubbing. Whirlpool advises against abrasive cleaners and warns that harsh cleaners, including bleach and petroleum-containing products, can damage plastic parts, interior liners, or gaskets. - Rinse and dry. Wipe the cleaned surfaces with a cloth dampened with clean water to remove baking soda residue, then dry thoroughly. GE’s interior-cleaning instructions recommend rinsing and drying before putting parts back.
- Replace parts and food. Reinstall the dry shelves, bins, and drawers as directed by the manual, then return the food.
How to handle shelves, bins, and drawers
Do not assume removable parts are dishwasher-safe. Check the manual for each part: GE’s general directions say not to wash plastic parts or glass shelves in a dishwasher, and Whirlpool notes that some refrigerator shelves, including those associated with under-shelf LED lighting, may not be dishwasher-safe. What to do if an odor remains
Remove spoiled food and clean the interior first; baking soda solution is a manufacturer-recommended cleaning option, not a guarantee that every odor will disappear. If a smell persists, consult the owner’s manual or contact the manufacturer’s service support for model-specific troubleshooting.
