“CLC Dev Punctuation” has no verified definition in the sources available. It may be shorthand for punctuation analysis on development data associated with the Cambridge Learner Corpus, but that is only a possible reading—not an established expansion of the phrase. The context where you saw it is needed to identify its intended meaning.
Why the phrase is ambiguous
The initials “CLC” can refer to different things, and the phrase does not identify an organization, dataset, software feature, or technical term on its own. Similar-looking phrases have also been found without a reliably verified definition. That does not establish that they refer to the same thing as “CLC Dev Punctuation.”
Without the surrounding page, document, or organization, treating any one expansion as definitive would be a guess.

In grammatical-error-correction research, the three ideas in the phrase do appear in related contexts: “CLC” can mean the Cambridge Learner Corpus, “dev” can refer to development data used during a study, and punctuation can be analyzed as an error category. This combination makes a corpus-research interpretation plausible, but the connection is inferential rather than a confirmed definition of the full phrase.

What CLC means in this context
A 2023 survey in Computational Linguistics describes the Cambridge Learner Corpus as a proprietary collection of more than 130,000 scripts, totaling approximately 29.1 million words. The scripts were written by international English learners for Cambridge exams across CEFR levels A1–C2. The survey distinguishes the public First Certificate in English (FCE) corpus as a subset of the full CLC. Read the survey.
Those details describe the corpus, not what “CLC Dev Punctuation” means. The public FCE subset should not be mistaken for the full proprietary collection.

What “dev” and “punctuation” might indicate
A 2017 sentence-correction paper reports punctuation as an error category and includes development-set frequency and evaluation tables. That is an example of punctuation analysis on development data in a particular study; its measurements apply to that dataset and experimental setup, not to a generally defined “CLC Dev Punctuation” category. How to identify the intended meaning
Look at the source where the phrase appears before expanding its initials. The most useful clues are:
- The surrounding sentence: Does it discuss learner writing, grammatical-error correction, a dataset split, or punctuation labels?
- The organization or project: Is “CLC” expanded elsewhere on the same page or in its documentation?
- The data description: Does “dev” name a development partition, or is it part of a product, team, or local abbreviation?
- The citation or link: If the phrase appears beside a paper or dataset, check whether that source explicitly defines it rather than inferring from nearby terms.
If none of those clues resolves the abbreviation, ask the author or organization that used it and include the sentence or page title where you found it. That context is necessary to distinguish the corpus-research possibility from a local or organization-specific meaning.
