Short answer: Choose Claude Artifacts when you want a documented path from a plain-language idea to an interactive game you can open, revise, and publish from within the product. Choose ChatGPT when your priority is a coding workspace for reviewing, editing, instrumenting, debugging, or porting game code. Neither product has an official, independent browser-game benchmark that proves it writes better game code or finishes faster.
The practical distinction is workflow, not a universal quality winner. Claude’s documentation treats Artifacts as self-contained interactive apps, including games and learning experiences. OpenAI’s documentation presents Canvas as a side-by-side coding workspace, while its current code-block documentation describes JavaScript and HTML labeling and supported previews without establishing a comparable in-product browser-game runtime. Your result will still depend on the brief, the game’s scope, and how carefully you test the generated code.
What you are actually comparing
A “simple browser game” usually means a small HTML, CSS, and JavaScript project that runs in a browser tab without a server. Examples include a clicker, reaction timer, memory matching game, breakout-style game, or one-screen dodge game. A useful prototype has a visible play area, explicit controls, a score, a restart action, and unambiguous win or loss behavior.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →That definition matters because a tool can be excellent at writing or reviewing JavaScript without providing an equally convenient way to play the result inside the same product. For this comparison, separate five questions:

- Can you get an interactive result in the product?
- How quickly can you change the code and see the effect?
- Can you inspect and take the code elsewhere?
- Can you share a playable version with another person?
- What access, storage, API, or platform limits affect the prototype?
Official product material answers those questions unevenly. Anthropic documents Artifacts as self-contained code, websites, and interactive React components, and its game-oriented guidance includes learning games. OpenAI documents Canvas as a coding collaboration surface with review, logging, comments, bug-fixing, and language-porting tools. Those are meaningful differences in workflow, but they are not a controlled comparison of game quality.
Start with the same game brief
If you want a fair personal comparison, give both assistants the same narrowly defined request. Keep the game small enough that you can inspect every important behavior. A one-screen game is a better test than a platformer with many levels, assets, audio tracks, and persistence requirements.
Use a brief such as:
Build a one-screen browser game in plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The player moves a blue square with the arrow keys or WASD and avoids falling red obstacles for 30 seconds. Show the score and remaining time. Include Start, Pause, and Restart buttons. Display a clear win message when the timer reaches zero and a clear loss message after a collision. Keep all code in one self-contained file, use no external libraries, and make the layout usable on a phone-sized screen. Explain the controls and identify where the speed, colors, and game duration can be changed.
This brief tests input handling, timing, collision detection, state changes, restart behavior, responsive layout, and the clarity of the generated explanation. It also avoids external API calls and a database, which are outside the documented limits of AI-powered Artifacts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat to check after generation
- The game starts only when Start is pressed, if that is what the brief requests.
- Pause actually stops the timer, movement, and obstacle updates.
- Restart clears the old interval or animation loop instead of creating a second game running on top of the first.
- A collision ends the round once, rather than repeatedly changing the score or displaying duplicate messages.
- The win and loss states cannot both appear after a race between a timer callback and a collision callback.
- Keyboard controls work without requiring focus on an unexpected element.
- The game remains usable when the browser viewport is narrow.
- All assets and logic are present if the brief asked for a self-contained file.
How Claude Artifacts fits this job
Artifacts are presented as interactive material
Anthropic describes Artifacts as self-contained material that can include code, websites, and interactive React components. Its game-oriented guidance specifically uses learning games as an example. That makes Artifacts the clearer documented route when your first question is, “Can I make something playable here and then keep iterating on it?”
Start by describing the game, its controls, its state transitions, and its constraints in one prompt. Ask for a small first version rather than a complete commercial-style design. Once the Artifact appears, use the interactive view to exercise the controls. Keep the initial version deliberately plain so that failures are easy to identify.
Iteration happens through conversation and Artifact versions
Anthropic’s documentation says you can ask Claude to modify an Artifact, view its code, copy or download it, and switch between versions. That supports a tight loop:

- Generate the smallest playable build. Ask for one screen, one input scheme, one scoring rule, and one restart path.
- Play the current version. Test start, pause, restart, win, loss, keyboard input, and narrow-window layout.
- Report one defect at a time. For example: “After Restart, two obstacle loops run at once and the score increases twice as fast.”
- Ask for a focused fix. Request that the existing behavior remain unchanged except for the named defect.
- Switch versions when needed. If a change breaks controls or layout, return to an earlier Artifact version instead of trying to reconstruct the old code from memory.
- Inspect the code before adding polish. Confirm where the game state, timer, collision test, and restart cleanup live.
Anthropic also documents a “Fix with Claude” style of conversational debugging for Artifacts. The value is not that every fix will be correct automatically; it is that the playable result and the code-edit conversation are presented as one workflow. You can ask for a diagnostic explanation, apply a change, and immediately exercise the same interaction again.

Sharing is part of the documented Artifact model
Anthropic documents publishing an Artifact for link access. Access continues until the creator unpublishes the work. A recipient can interact with the basic functionality subject to the current access rules and product settings. This is useful for a prototype review because you can send one link instead of manually packaging a file.
Sharing does not mean the Artifact is a complete hosting platform. Confirm the current visibility controls, account requirements, and plan-specific behavior before sending a link to a group. Product access and sharing details can change, and the experience may differ across web and mobile surfaces.
Important Artifact limits
Anthropic’s help material identifies specific restrictions for AI-powered Artifacts:
- AI-powered Artifacts require the feature to be enabled.
- Users authenticate with their Claude accounts for AI functionality.
- AI-powered Artifacts cannot make third-party API calls.
- AI-powered Artifacts cannot use persistent storage.
These limits are compatible with a self-contained score-and-timer prototype, but not with a game that needs a server leaderboard, cloud saves, live multiplayer, an external user account system, or a remote content feed. You can still download the code and continue development in a normal local web project, where you control the runtime and can add the services your design requires.
Artifact availability, sharing, mobile behavior, and plan requirements are volatile product details. Check the current Anthropic help pages and the controls shown in your account before committing a team workflow.

How ChatGPT Canvas fits this job
Canvas is documented as a coding workspace
OpenAI describes Canvas as a side-by-side workspace for writing and coding. Its documented code shortcuts include reviewing code, adding logs or comments, fixing bugs, and porting code among listed languages. For a browser game, that is valuable when you already have code—or when you want the assistant to help you reason about a generated file in a dedicated editing surface.
A practical Canvas sequence is:
- Open a coding canvas and provide the same game brief. State the required controls, states, and file constraints.
- Ask for an explicit architecture. Request named functions for starting, pausing, restarting, collision detection, scoring, and cleanup.
- Use review or comment-oriented requests. Ask Canvas to identify unreachable states, duplicate timers, missing event cleanup, and keyboard-focus problems.
- Add logs temporarily. Instrument state transitions such as
started, paused, won, andlost, then remove the logs after the behavior is verified. - Ask for a targeted bug fix. Include the observed symptom and the expected behavior rather than saying only “make it work.”
- Port only when there is a reason. A game written in browser JavaScript does not automatically benefit from conversion to another language; porting is useful when you are moving logic to a different environment or teaching a concept.
Canvas is therefore a strong fit for code-centered collaboration. It does not, in the cited OpenAI material, establish the same built-in interactive-app workflow that Anthropic documents for Artifacts.
What current code-block documentation does—and does not—say
OpenAI’s current help material describes code blocks with language labels that include JavaScript and HTML, supported content previews, and the ability to run supported Python code. It does not establish that a browser game can be run inside ChatGPT through that feature. A preview of HTML or a displayed code block should not be treated as proof of a fully interactive, in-product game runtime.
If Canvas gives you a preview or another execution option in your account, test the exact behavior rather than assuming it is available everywhere. If it only gives you code, save the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and open the project in a browser or local development environment. Keep the distinction clear: code assistance is documented; a comparable built-in browser-game player is not established by the cited sources.
Claude and ChatGPT compared on the decisions that matter
| Decision | Claude Artifacts | ChatGPT Canvas and code blocks |
|---|---|---|
| In-product interactivity | Artifacts are documented as interactive apps and components, with games included in Anthropic’s game-oriented guidance. | Canvas is documented as a coding workspace. Current code-block documentation describes JavaScript and HTML labels and supported previews, but does not establish a browser-game runtime. |
| Iteration | Ask Claude to modify the Artifact, test the result, and switch among versions. | Edit code in a side-by-side workspace and use documented review, logging, commenting, and bug-fixing shortcuts. |
| Debugging | Conversational updates and “Fix with Claude” are documented for Artifact work. | Canvas supports code review, adding logs or comments, and fixing bugs. |
| Code access | Anthropic documents viewing, copying, and downloading Artifact code. | The cited Canvas launch material documents editing and porting. A present-day, symmetrical export workflow is not established by those sources; verify the controls in your account. |
| Sharing | Anthropic documents publishing an Artifact for link access until it is unpublished, subject to current access rules. | The cited sources do not establish a comparable Canvas game-publishing workflow. |
| External APIs and persistent data | AI-powered Artifacts cannot make third-party API calls or use persistent storage. | The cited Canvas and code-block material does not state an equivalent game-specific restriction. It also does not document a built-in backend or database. |
| Plan and platform behavior | Artifact access, AI features, sharing, and mobile behavior can vary by plan and product surface. | Current Canvas and code-block availability should be checked in the account and platform you intend to use. |
Portability, hosting, and what happens after the prototype
Claude has the clearer documented portability statement: view and download the Artifact code. That lets you move a prototype into a local folder, a repository, or another hosting workflow, then add assets, tests, analytics, or a backend outside the Artifact environment.
For ChatGPT, the cited OpenAI launch material establishes code editing and porting, but it does not by itself establish a current export or game-hosting workflow. Do not promise readers that a Canvas project can be published with one click. Check the current interface, then use the available copy or download path—or copy the code from the workspace into a normal project.

Neither workflow removes ordinary browser engineering responsibilities. Once the prototype leaves the assistant, you still need to handle asset licensing, responsive input, performance on slower devices, security of any server endpoint, and version control. A generated game should be treated as source code requiring review, not as a tested production build.
How to run a fair personal test
No official source reviewed provides a controlled Claude-versus-ChatGPT benchmark for browser-game quality or completion speed. You can still perform a useful editorial or team evaluation, as long as you label it honestly as your own test rather than a published benchmark.
Use identical conditions
- Send the same brief, with the same request for a self-contained file and the same controls.
- Do not give one assistant extra clarification unless you give the other the same clarification.
- Record the exact product surface, account plan, date, and whether the test was on desktop or mobile.
- Count only working behavior, not the assistant’s confidence or the length of its explanation.
Score behavior, not style
| Test | Pass condition | Typical failure to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Start | One click begins one game loop. | Nothing starts, or repeated clicks create duplicate loops. |
| Controls | Arrow keys and WASD move the player consistently. | Input works only after an unexpected element receives focus. |
| Pause | Timer, movement, and obstacle updates stop. | Visual movement stops but the timer continues. |
| Collision | One collision ends the round and shows loss. | Score changes repeatedly or the loss message flickers. |
| Win | Reaching the time limit shows win and stops play. | Win and loss can both trigger in the same frame. |
| Restart | Restart returns to a clean initial state. | Old obstacles, intervals, listeners, or scores remain. |
| Responsive layout | Controls and status remain visible on a narrow viewport. | Play area overflows or buttons become unreachable. |
Because this method is not a test conducted for the product claims above, report the result as “our test with this brief,” include the date and setup, and avoid turning a single successful prototype into a general ranking.

Which tool should you choose?
Choose Claude Artifacts when the prototype must be playable in the product
- You want an interactive app-style result rather than only an edited code file.
- You expect several conversational revisions while repeatedly playing the current version.
- You want documented Artifact version switching.
- You want a documented publish-for-link option for a basic prototype.
- Your game can work without third-party API calls or persistent storage.
Choose ChatGPT Canvas when code review is the center of the work
- You already have game code and need structured review or targeted edits.
- You want to add temporary logs or comments to diagnose state and timing bugs.
- You need help porting code among the languages supported by the workspace.
- You are comfortable running or hosting the resulting HTML, CSS, and JavaScript outside the assistant if the product does not provide the runtime you need.
Use both when the project has two distinct phases
A reasonable hybrid process is to use an Artifact for a quick playable concept, download and inspect the code, then use a coding workspace for deeper refactoring, logging, or a port to another environment. That is a workflow choice, not evidence that one assistant is superior. Keep a clean copy of each working version and document any behavior that must not change during refactoring.

Common failure modes and fixes
The generated game looks complete but is not playable
Check whether the assistant produced a visual mockup, a code listing, or an actual interactive Artifact. In ChatGPT, a labeled code block or preview does not by itself establish a browser-game runtime. In either product, ask for a minimal reproduction with one control and one state transition, then add features after that path works.
Restart makes the game faster each time
The usual cause is an interval, animation frame, or event listener that was not cleared. Ask the assistant to identify every timer and listener created during Start and to cancel or remove each one during Pause, Loss, Win, and Restart. Then test three consecutive restarts while watching the score and obstacle frequency.
Pause changes the display but not the state
Require one authoritative game-state value such as running, paused, won, or lost, and make timer, input, collision, and rendering code consult it. Add temporary logs around every state transition, then remove the logs after confirming that only valid transitions occur.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The game needs saves or online features
AI-powered Artifacts cannot use persistent storage or make third-party API calls according to Anthropic’s documentation. Move that feature into a normal web project with a backend or browser storage strategy that you design and secure, or reduce the prototype to session-only state.
A shared link does not work for everyone
Recheck whether the Artifact is published, whether it was later unpublished, whether the viewer must sign in, and whether the recipient is using a supported product surface. Sharing and plan rules can change, so verify the current account settings rather than relying on an old link or a different user’s experience.
Bottom line
For a simple browser-game prototype, Claude Artifacts have the clearer documented path to creating, iterating on, and sharing an interactive app inside the assistant. ChatGPT Canvas is the better-documented choice for code review, logging, debugging, and porting in a side-by-side workspace. There is no official evidence here that either assistant writes better browser games overall. Test the same tightly scoped brief, inspect every game state, and choose the workflow that matches where you need the playable result to live.
