Claude did not discover a new CRISPR editor. Anthropic says its AI agents identified a previously uncharacterized bacteriophage system that combines a reverse transcriptase, a neighboring partner gene and a long array of repeated, non-coding DNA sequences. The arrangement resembles a CRISPR array, and its repeats are transcribed into short RNAs, but no DNA-editing activity has been demonstrated. Anthropic’s own central qualification is blunt: “Although we don’t yet know its function.”
What Claude actually found
The system, which Anthropic calls array-associated reverse transcriptases (ART), occurs in bacteriophages—viruses that infect bacteria. It has three reported components:
- A reverse transcriptase (RT): an enzyme that copies RNA into DNA.
- A neighboring partner gene: a nearby gene that appears to be part of the same system.
- A long repeat array: evenly spaced, non-coding DNA repeats arranged in a pattern that visually recalls a CRISPR array.
The claimed advance is the recognition that these features belong together as a system. The RT itself was not wholly unknown: WIRED reports that a related RT had appeared in a 2021 study of jumbo phages. It is therefore more accurate to describe ART as a newly characterized association or system-level discovery than as an entirely new enzyme.
Why the pattern is called “CRISPR-like”
CRISPR systems commonly contain repeated DNA interleaved with spacer sequences that can provide guide information for programmable molecular machinery. ART has a repeat-array architecture that looks analogous, and Anthropic’s initial experiments found that the repeats are expressed as distinct short RNAs.

That resemblance is only a starting point. Expression proves that the array is transcribed; it does not show that the RNAs guide a protein, recognize a target, cut DNA, copy DNA into a chosen location or perform any other CRISPR-style operation.

Anthropic says only a handful of systems share the full combination of features and that those known examples are programmable. That makes ART interesting to investigate, but it is not evidence that ART itself is programmable.
What has been demonstrated in the laboratory
The first experiments established transcription of the repeat array. In practical terms, researchers detected short RNA products corresponding to the repeats. They have not yet established what those RNAs do, whether they interact with the reverse transcriptase or partner protein, or whether the system acts on a particular DNA or RNA target.

Anthropic says further experiments are underway. WIRED reports that the technical report had not been peer-reviewed and that it remains unknown whether ART could be adapted into a gene-editing tool, much less whether such a tool would be useful.
How Claude’s search was carried out
Anthropic describes a large, parallel genome-mining effort rather than a single chatbot answer. According to the company’s September 23, 2026 announcement:
- About 950 Claude agents searched for 21 hours.
- The agents processed 210 million tokens.
- They gathered more than 200,000 reverse transcriptases.
- They selected 3,500 candidate systems for additional screening.
- They narrowed those to 20 candidates for detailed, human-readable reports.
Anthropic says an expert scientist might need weeks to months to conduct a comparable genome-mining analysis. Those scale and timing figures are company-reported; they measure the breadth of the search, not the correctness or usefulness of every biological conclusion.

How much of the work was done by AI?
Claude generated and organized hypotheses from genomic data, but the project was not an autonomous laboratory discovery. Anthropic says human scientists supplied the initial prompt, reviewed candidate systems, performed all wet-lab experiments and interpreted the results.
The company’s Bay Area laboratory operates at biosafety levels 1 and 2 and does not handle pathogens that infect humans. That distinction matters: the agents helped find a pattern in existing sequence data, while people decided which candidates to test and carried out the experiments needed to determine whether the pattern has a function.
Can ART edit DNA today?
There is no evidence yet that it can. A useful editing system would need to show, at minimum, a reproducible biochemical reaction; a defined target-recognition mechanism; controllable specificity; and the ability to program the system to act on selected sequences. None of those properties has been established for ART in the announcement or the early work described by WIRED.

Consequently, ART is not a demonstrated gene-editing platform, medical technology or CRISPR replacement. Claims that it will become a therapy or a general-purpose DNA tool go beyond the evidence currently available.

Reactions so far separate enthusiasm for the search method from caution about the biology. Feng Zhang, a professor at MIT and the Broad Institute, called the finding “an exciting example of how AI agents can contribute to biological discovery” and said the association of RNA-repeat arrays with reverse transcriptases merits further investigation.

What researchers need to learn next
The next experiments must connect the parts of ART to a mechanism. Researchers will need to determine whether the repeat-derived RNAs bind the reverse transcriptase or partner protein, whether the system copies RNA into DNA in a controlled reaction, and whether any sequence determines its target. They will also need independent replication and comparisons across the small number of related systems.
Until those tests are complete, the defensible conclusion is narrow but meaningful: Claude helped identify a previously uncharacterized bacteriophage system and prioritize it for laboratory study. The repeat array is genuinely CRISPR-like in appearance and produces short RNAs, but its biological job—and any practical use—remains unknown.
