When Claude Artifacts are not working, identify the failure first: creation, discovery, an error inside the artifact, editing or export, or opening and sharing. The correct fix depends on that symptom. For an on-screen artifact error, use Try fixing with Claude beside the message, then send the copied diagnostic details. For a missing or inaccessible artifact, check the signed-in account, whether it is a legacy or current shared artifact, project and organization permissions, and your usage status.
Start with the symptom, not a generic browser fix
Artifacts are self-contained outputs that Claude can generate as documents, code, websites, images, diagrams, dashboards, or interactive tools. They are part of Claude rather than a separate general-purpose desktop application. Because creation, access, and runtime errors have different causes, begin by matching what you see to one of these situations:

This triage avoids assuming that every “Claude Artifacts not working” report is a browser problem. Claude’s own help guidance does not describe one universal cause or a guaranteed repair sequence.

Artifacts are outputs inside Claude
An Artifact can be a standalone document, a code project, a web page, an image, a diagram, a dashboard, or an interactive tool. It opens in a separate window from the conversation and is saved in the Artifacts tab. That separate window can make an artifact seem missing when the original chat is still visible, so check the tab rather than looking only in the message stream. Device availability is not identical to sharing control
Claude says artifacts are available on the web and in the desktop app. You can also view and edit them in the iOS and Android apps. Sharing settings are the exception: the sharing help page says they cannot be changed from the iOS or Android apps. If you are trying to make a link public, organization-only, or otherwise change its access on a phone, move to Claude on the web or Claude Desktop first.
Check the account and workspace before assuming deletion
A missing artifact may belong to another Claude account, workspace, or organization. Confirm the signed-in identity, then open the Artifacts tab in that same context. If the artifact was made inside a project, project access can be an additional requirement for people trying to open it. A link that works for its creator can therefore fail for a colleague who is not a member of the relevant project or organization.
Fix an error displayed inside an Artifact
Use “Try fixing with Claude” first
For an error rendered inside an artifact, look near the message for the exact action Try fixing with Claude. Select it. Claude copies the error details into a new message so the model can diagnose the problem in context. Send that message and wait for the attempted repair. The Help Center explicitly warns that the attempt may not succeed and that some errors require additional troubleshooting; treat the action as the supported first diagnosis, not a guarantee. Describe one reproducible failure
If the automatic prompt does not appear, or if the first repair does not work, send Claude the exact error and a short reproduction. State what you clicked, what you expected, and what happened instead. Claude Academy’s troubleshooting examples show the useful level of specificity: the calculator isn’t working with decimals
and the game crashes at level 3
. A concrete input or step is more useful than “my artifact is broken.”
- Copy the visible error text exactly, including punctuation or an error code.
- Name the feature that fails, such as decimal calculations, a button, a chart, or a particular game level.
- Give the smallest input that triggers it.
- Say whether the problem happens every time or only after a particular action.
For example, explain that entering 12.5 into the calculator and selecting + produces the error, rather than reporting only that the calculator does not work. This gives Claude a test case to reason about.

When the attempted repair fails
A failed repair does not by itself prove that the underlying artifact is permanently unusable. The supported guidance says some errors need more troubleshooting. Send a follow-up with the exact new behavior, not a duplicate description. If Claude changes the artifact, test the same reproduction again and report whether the symptom changed, disappeared, or moved to another step.
When an Artifact is missing or not showing up
Look in the Artifacts tab and the original conversation
New artifacts are saved in the Artifacts tab and open separately from the chat. Return to the conversation that generated it, confirm that the generation actually completed, and then check the tab. If the conversation produced several versions, open the one whose title or content matches the requested output. This distinguishes “not listed” from “listed but fails to open.”
Separate a legacy artifact from a current shared artifact
The access rules are different for legacy artifacts published from a chat. The Help Center defines legacy artifacts as artifacts made in chat before September 16, 2026. Existing legacy artifacts continue to work and can still be published or shared, but new legacy artifacts cannot be created. A legacy artifact published from a chat is the documented exception that people without a Claude account can open.
Other shared artifacts require an account. If a recipient sees a sign-in request or an inaccessible page, ask which kind of link they received before changing the artifact itself. The following comparison captures the material access difference:

Check Team and Enterprise restrictions
On Team and Enterprise plans, sharing may be limited to people inside the organization. An artifact created in a project may additionally require access to that project. Organization-owner settings can determine which sharing choices are available. Consequently, a link that opens for one coworker can fail for another even when both are using the same URL.

Ask the owner to verify three things on the web or desktop app: the selected sharing scope, whether the recipient belongs to the permitted organization, and whether the recipient has access to the project that contains the artifact. The official sharing guidance is at Share artifacts.

If the problem is “I can open the artifact but cannot change who can access it,” do not keep searching the iOS or Android menus. Sharing settings cannot be changed in those apps. Sign in on the web or in Claude Desktop and make the change there.
When Claude cannot create an Artifact or stops halfway
Check usage only when the symptoms suggest a limit
Artifact creation and use contribute to Claude usage limits. Eligible paid-plan users can see session and weekly usage progress at Settings > Usage. The usage-limit guidance covers Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans. Open that page when Claude stops responding around a limit warning, refuses a new request after substantial use, or otherwise indicates that capacity has been reached. Do not treat the usage page as proof that every failed artifact is a limit problem. A syntax or runtime error inside an already-created artifact is a different symptom. Likewise, a missing shared link is normally an identity or permission question, not evidence of exhausted usage.
Record the failure before trying again
When creation stops, preserve the original prompt, the last visible Claude message, and any displayed error. Then retry with a concise description of the failure. If a second attempt creates a different artifact, keep both versions until you know which one contains the relevant error; deleting the first version can remove the only reproducible example.

Editing, copying, downloading, and exporting problems
Identify the artifact’s control model
Template-based artifacts can be edited directly. Legacy artifacts use a different set of view, copy, and download controls. If an edit button is absent, that may reflect the artifact type rather than a broken interface. First establish whether the artifact is a current template-based output or a legacy artifact published from a chat.
For a legacy artifact, use the controls that are presented for viewing, copying, or downloading instead of expecting the direct editor used by template-based artifacts. The artifact help article documents these distinctions at What are artifacts and how do I use them?.
Editing is also subject to access
A recipient who can view a shared artifact is not automatically entitled to change its source. If the owner intended collaborative work, verify the sharing mode and project permissions on the web or desktop app. On Team and Enterprise, organization and project restrictions can override what an individual recipient expects from the link.
Export is not the same as repair
If the artifact runs but a download or copy control is unavailable, changing the code inside the artifact will not necessarily restore that control. Treat the problem as a control or permission issue first. Capture the artifact type, the controls that are visible, and the action that fails, then ask Claude to diagnose that specific behavior.

Opening and sharing a link that fails
Use this access checklist
- Open the link in the account that should have access. For non-legacy shared artifacts, sign-in is required.
- Confirm whether the link is a legacy artifact published from a chat before September 16, 2026, or another type of shared artifact.
- If it is a Team or Enterprise artifact, verify that the recipient is in the allowed organization.
- If the artifact belongs to a project, verify that the recipient can open that project.
- Ask the owner to inspect the sharing choice and organization-owner restrictions from Claude on the web or desktop app.
- If the page opens but the artifact itself displays an error, switch to the in-artifact repair procedure rather than changing link permissions.
Why the same URL can behave differently
Access is evaluated in the viewer’s account and workspace context. A legacy published chat artifact has a documented no-account exception, while other shared artifacts require an account. Team and Enterprise policies can make access organization-only, and project membership can add another gate. These are separate checks, so a successful sign-in does not automatically grant access to every artifact in a link.

Prototype behavior versus production reliability
AI-powered Artifacts are intended for prototyping, testing, and demonstration. Claude Academy describes them as a way to build and show an idea quickly, while noting that a production system may need more robust infrastructure and careful API-key management. That distinction matters when an artifact is being used as an internal demo versus a customer-facing application.
Use an Artifact for a prototype when
- You need to explore an interaction, workflow, calculation, or visual concept quickly.
- The audience understands that the output is a demonstration rather than a hardened service.
- A short-lived test can tolerate additional diagnosis when a model-generated feature fails.
Plan additional engineering for production when
- The application must provide dependable uptime or predictable behavior for many users.
- It handles credentials, customer data, or other secrets that require controlled API-key management.
- It needs monitoring, deployment controls, authentication, data storage, or recovery processes beyond the Artifact itself.
A production requirement does not prove that a particular artifact error is unfixable. It means that repairing the prototype is only one part of making a dependable system. A complete recovery workflow
Use the following order so each diagnostic step preserves useful evidence for the next one:
- Classify the symptom. Decide whether the failure is creation, discovery, an in-artifact error, editing/export, or opening/sharing.
- Capture exact evidence. Save the visible message, the artifact title, the account or workspace in use, and the smallest action that reproduces the problem.
- Run the supported repair for runtime errors. Select Try fixing with Claude, send the copied details, and test the same reproduction after Claude responds.
- Verify location and identity. Check the Artifacts tab, the original chat, and the signed-in account or organization.
- Classify the sharing context. Determine whether the artifact is a legacy published chat artifact or another shared artifact, then apply the corresponding account and permission rules.
- Move sharing changes to the right device. Use the web or Claude Desktop app, not the iOS or Android app, to change sharing settings.
- Inspect usage when appropriate. For Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans, open Settings > Usage and compare the timing of the failure with session or weekly usage.
- Set a realistic scope. If the artifact is a prototype being treated as a production service, identify the missing infrastructure and API-key controls instead of expecting the Artifact alone to supply them.
What to include when asking Claude for more help
A high-quality diagnostic message should let Claude reproduce the failure without guessing. Include:
- The artifact type, such as a calculator, dashboard, game, document, or website.
- The exact visible error, copied verbatim.
- The action sequence and input that triggers it.
- Whether the artifact was created recently or is a legacy artifact from before September 16, 2026.
- Whether the problem affects creation, opening, editing, exporting, or sharing.
- For access issues, whether the viewer is signed in, belongs to the organization, and can access the relevant project.
- For a usage-related suspicion, when the failure began relative to the session or weekly usage shown in Settings > Usage.
Use plain, testable language. The examples the calculator isn’t working with decimals
and the game crashes at level 3
communicate a feature and a reproducible condition in one sentence. Avoid replacing those details with a broad statement such as “Claude Artifacts are down,” because the available guidance does not establish a universal outage or a single browser sequence that resolves every case.
