Claude API pricing is usage-based: Anthropic charges separately for input and output tokens, with rates set by model. Output tokens usually cost several times more than input tokens, while retries, long prompts, tools, geographic routing and premium modes can add substantially to a bill. A reliable estimate therefore combines token counts, model rates, cache operations and every request-side modifier—not just a monthly request total.
The prices below reflect Anthropic’s published list prices accessed on October 16, 2026. Model names, rates, limits and feature availability can change, so record the date of your assumptions and recheck the pricing page before launch.
How Claude API billing works
For each successful API request, Anthropic meters the tokens sent to the model and the tokens it generates. Input and output are priced independently at USD-per-million-token rates. A request with a short prompt but a long answer can cost more than a request with a large prompt and a brief answer, because output rates are higher on every listed model.
Prompt caching is a separate meter. Tokens written to a cache use a write rate, and tokens served from that cache use a read rate. Server-side tools, long-context tiers, fast mode, US-only inference and some partner-cloud routes can add their own charge or multiplier. Message Batches use a discounted asynchronous rate rather than the standard synchronous token price.

Current Claude model prices
The following snapshot uses Anthropic’s published USD rates per one million tokens. Cache prices are shown where the pricing table publishes them. Haiku 5.5 has two price tiers based on prompt length.
| Model | Input tokens | Output tokens | 5-minute cache write | 1-hour cache write | Cache read | Important threshold or positioning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Fable 5.1 | $10 | $50 | $12.50 | $20 | $0.25 | Demanding reasoning and long-horizon work |
| Claude Opus 5.5 | $4 | $20 | $5 | $8 | $0.20 | High-end reasoning |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $10 | $2.50 | $4 | $0.10 | General speed and intelligence balance |
| Claude Haiku 5.5, prompts up to 100,000 tokens | $0.10 | $0.50 | Not listed in the supplied price table | Not listed in the supplied price table | Not listed in the supplied price table | High-volume classification, extraction and routing |
| Claude Haiku 5.5, prompts above 100,000 tokens | $0.50 | $2.50 | Not listed in the supplied price table | Not listed in the supplied price table | Not listed in the supplied price table | Higher long-prompt tier |
| Claude Sonnet 4.6 | $3 | $15 | $3.75 | $6 | $0.30 | Previous-generation Sonnet pricing in the current table |
| Claude Haiku 4.5 | $1 | $5 | $1.25 | $2 | $0.10 | Lower-cost model for lighter workloads |
These are list prices, not a guarantee of a future invoice. Anthropic also notes that Claude 4.7 and later models use a newer tokenizer that produces approximately 30% more tokens for the same text, with the exact increase depending on content and workload shape. Token growth of that kind affects both your estimate and any context-length threshold, even when the visible prompt has not changed.
The cost equation you can reproduce
Estimate each workload with this equation:
estimated_cost = (input_tokens / 1,000,000 × input_rate) + (output_tokens / 1,000,000 × output_rate) + cache_write_cost + cache_read_cost + tool_or_server_charges
For a monthly forecast, multiply the per-request result by expected requests, then add retries, validation calls, scheduled jobs and peak-period overhead. Keep synchronous interactive traffic separate from asynchronous batch traffic, because the batch discount changes the arithmetic.
Worked example: Sonnet 5.5 without caching
Suppose one request sends 100,000 input tokens and receives 20,000 output tokens. Sonnet 5.5 lists input at $2 per million and output at $10 per million:
(100,000 / 1,000,000 × $2) + (20,000 / 1,000,000 × $10) = $0.20 + $0.20 = $0.40

The $0.40 is an illustrative calculation, not a measured bill. It excludes cache operations, tools, special routing, retries and any other modifier.
Worked example: a cached 100,000-token prefix
If that same 100,000-token prefix is written once to a five-minute cache and read ten times, price the cache tokens separately. Sonnet 5.5’s five-minute write is 1.25 times the $2 input rate, or $2.50 per million tokens. The write costs 0.1 × $2.50 = $0.25. A cache read is 0.1 times the input rate, or $0.20 per million tokens; ten reads cost 10 × 0.1 × $0.1? Wait no. Correct arithmetic: Sonnet 5.5 cache read is $0.10 per million, so ten reads of 100,000 tokens cost 10 × 0.1 × $0.10 = $0.10. Total cache operation cost is therefore $0.35 before output and any uncached tokens.
Anthropic’s caching guidance states that the five-minute option pays back after one read and the one-hour option after two reads, compared with repeatedly sending the same uncached input. The break-even result assumes the cached tokens would otherwise be billed as ordinary input and that no other request modifier changes the comparison.
Monthly estimate with retries
For 100,000 requests at the $0.40 example price, the base estimate is $40,000. If 2% of calls are retried once at the same token volume, add 2,000 more request-equivalents, or $800. A 5% validation call that repeats 10% of the original output adds another usage stream. Track those calls explicitly instead of hiding them in an average request price; operational behavior is often the largest difference between a spreadsheet forecast and a production bill.

Prompt caching: when it lowers cost
Caching is most useful when a large prefix is stable and reused within the cache lifetime. Good candidates include system instructions, tool definitions, policy text, recurring reference documents and the fixed portion of a conversation. Dynamic user content should remain outside the cached prefix unless it is itself reused.
Cache price multipliers
- Five-minute cache writes are priced at 1.25 times the model’s ordinary input rate.
- One-hour cache writes are priced at 2 times the ordinary input rate.
- Cache reads are generally priced at 0.1 times the ordinary input rate.
- The published break-even guidance is one read for the five-minute option and two reads for the one-hour option.
Choose the lifetime from the reuse pattern, not from the largest available window. A prefix used twice within a few minutes may favor five-minute caching; a prefix reused throughout a longer workflow may justify the one-hour write premium.
Cache accounting and throughput
In usage telemetry, separate ordinary input from cache creation and cache reads. Anthropic says that, for most Claude models, cache reads are excluded from input-tokens-per-minute (ITPM) rate limits. That can improve effective throughput as well as reduce the token price, but the exact limit behavior remains model- and account-dependent.

Batch API discounts and asynchronous work
Anthropic’s Batch API allows asynchronous processing of large volumes with a 50% discount on both input and output tokens. Use it for work that can wait for completion, such as offline classification, document enrichment, dataset labeling and evaluation runs.
Batch is not a substitute for a low-latency request path. Before moving a job, check whether your product can tolerate asynchronous completion, how you will retry individual failures, and how you will reconcile batch results with the originating records. Apply the 50% reduction to token charges only; continue to account for cache operations, tools or other charges that your workload actually uses.
Extra charges and multipliers to include
Long context and prompt-length tiers
Some models change rates when prompts cross a context threshold. Haiku 5.5, for example, lists one price up to 100,000 prompt tokens and a higher input and output price above that threshold. Count the full prompt, including system content, tools and conversation history, before assuming that a request remains in the lower tier.
Tools and server-side services
Server-side tools can add usage charges. Anthropic’s published tool pricing lists web search at $10 per 1,000 searches. If one user request triggers multiple searches or retries a tool call, multiply the tool count independently from model tokens.
US-only inference
Anthropic lists a 1.1× multiplier for US-only inference on Claude 4.6 and later. Apply that premium to the affected usage, and document whether it covers all requests or only a selected deployment route. Do not apply it to older models without confirming their current routing terms.
Fast mode, partner routing and geography
Fast mode, partner-cloud routing and data-residency choices can change the effective price. The multiplier or regional rate may depend on the model and platform, so keep those values as explicit configuration inputs rather than burying them in a single blended token rate. A regional requirement can also change where billing appears and which service-level limits apply.
A practical cost-control playbook
1. Match the model to the job
- Use Haiku for high-volume classification, extraction and routing when its quality is sufficient.
- Use Sonnet for general application work that needs a balance of speed and intelligence.
- Use Opus or Fable when difficult reasoning or long-horizon performance justifies the higher output rate.
Model selection should be based on the quality threshold of the task, not on the cheapest input price alone. A cheaper model that requires repeated retries, human correction or a second validation call can cost more end to end.

2. Cap output deliberately
Set a sensible max_tokens value for every request. Enforce a schema or field-length limit where the application permits it, and stop retries that produce the same oversized failure. Because output rates are higher than input rates on every model in the snapshot, an uncontrolled answer length can dominate the bill.
3. Count tokens before sending
Use Anthropic’s /v1/messages/count_tokens endpoint before dispatching unusually large or expensive prompts. Add this check to upload, indexing and conversation-history paths where a single document can push a request across a pricing tier. Store the count with the request estimate so an incident review can compare planned and actual usage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Cache stable prefixes
Place reusable instructions, tool definitions and recurring documents in the cacheable prefix. Measure reuse frequency and expiration rather than caching every prompt by default. A cache write that is never read is pure overhead; a large stable prefix read repeatedly can deliver both cost and throughput benefits.
5. Move deferrable work to batches
Route offline enrichment, evaluation and bulk classification to Message Batches when asynchronous completion is acceptable. Keep interactive traffic on the normal Messages path so a queue does not become a user-facing latency problem.
6. Set hard spend ceilings
Configure organization or workspace spend limits. Anthropic documents that requests return HTTP 400 when a specified spend limit has been reached. Treat that response as a controlled failure: surface a useful status to the caller, stop automatic retries, and alert the owner before raising the ceiling.
7. Budget retries and validation calls
Record the original request, retry reason, retry count and validation usage. Exponential backoff prevents a transient outage from becoming a rapid-fire cost spike, but backoff alone does not limit spend. Add a maximum retry count and a circuit breaker for repeated failures.

For input accounting, sum input_tokens, cache_creation_input_tokens and cache_read_input_tokens. Track output tokens, model, request status, tool calls, routing mode and workspace alongside the token fields.

Rate limits and operational safeguards
Anthropic exposes rate-limit information through response headers, while the Console Usage page provides a view of consumption. Use both: headers support per-request control, and the usage view helps identify a trend across workspaces and models.
- Alert on rapid growth in output tokens, not only on request count.
- Alert when cache-write volume rises without a corresponding cache-read increase.
- Compare successful and failed requests so application errors do not trigger blind retries.
- Separate production, staging and evaluation workspaces when your account structure allows it.
- Keep a daily spend estimate and a hard monthly ceiling; a dashboard without an enforcement point is not a budget control.
Rate limits and spend limits solve different problems. A rate limit controls how quickly requests or tokens can flow. A spend limit controls the financial ceiling. You need both for a production service that must remain available without allowing an accidental loop to consume the budget.
Console credits and billing behavior
Console users generally purchase prepaid credits. Successful calls are charged, failed requests are not, and auto-reload is available. Purchased credits expire one year after the purchase date, and Anthropic states that the expiration date cannot be extended under its credit terms.
Prepaid billing changes the operational checklist: monitor the remaining balance, verify the auto-reload threshold and owner, and alert before a balance reaches zero. A failed request that is not charged can still create a service incident if the caller retries indefinitely, so billing protection does not replace retry controls.
Direct API versus cloud deployment routes
The direct API gives you Anthropic’s REST endpoints and Console controls. Enterprise teams can also use Claude through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry. Those platforms have separate regional pricing and billing mechanics, so do not combine their rates with the direct API table.
Marketplace consumption units
AWS and Azure marketplace routes convert token-rated usage into Claude Consumption Units (CCUs) at $0.01 per CCU and meter usage hourly. Partner-operated platforms can apply their own regional pricing. Confirm the model, region, data-residency option, currency, commitment terms and meter definition in the platform contract before building a forecast.
How to compare deployment routes
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Token price | What are the input and output rates for the exact model and region? |
| Cache economics | Are cache writes and reads supported, and are their multipliers the same as the direct API? |
| Context thresholds | Does a prompt-length threshold change the rate? |
| Latency modes | Is fast mode available, and what premium applies? |
| Batch eligibility | Can asynchronous jobs receive the 50% token discount? |
| Geography | Does US-only or another residency requirement add a multiplier? |
| Billing unit | Are you billed directly by token, by CCU, or through another meter? |
| Controls | Where are spend limits, usage charts and rate-limit headers exposed? |
Keep a separate cost model for each route. A lower apparent token rate can be offset by regional requirements, a different cache policy, marketplace fees or operational controls that your team must build itself.

Build a production estimate step by step
- Define the request shape. Record average and worst-case input tokens, output tokens, cacheable prefix size, tool calls and expected retries.
- Select the model and route. Capture the exact model identifier, direct API or cloud platform, region and any fast-mode or residency setting.
- Count representative prompts. Use the Token Counting endpoint for short, typical and worst-case inputs; include system instructions, tools and conversation history.
- Apply token rates. Multiply input and output token counts by the model’s per-million-token prices, checking every prompt-length tier.
- Add cache operations. Price cache creation and reads separately, using the correct five-minute or one-hour multiplier and expected reuse count.
- Add non-token charges. Include web searches, other server-side tools, geography premiums, fast mode and partner-cloud meters.
- Model reliability overhead. Add retries, validation calls, timeouts that cause replays and peak-period headroom.
- Multiply by volume. Produce separate totals for interactive requests, batch jobs and evaluations before combining them.
- Set controls before launch. Configure spend limits, auto-reload alerts, rate-limit handling, retry caps and a dashboard using the usage fields.
- Record the assumption date. Prices and model status are volatile; refresh the sheet whenever Anthropic changes a model, tokenizer, cache multiplier or limit tier.
Common estimation mistakes
- Using request count as the budget. Two requests can differ by orders of magnitude in token volume.
- Ignoring output length. Output is separately priced and usually more expensive than input.
- Counting only user text. System prompts, tools and conversation history also consume input tokens.
- Assuming cache reads are free. They are discounted, not free, and cache writes have their own prices.
- Applying direct-API rates to a partner cloud. Marketplace and regional meters can differ.
- Treating a failed request as harmless. It may not be charged, but an uncontrolled retry loop can create many successful charges once the fault clears.
- Leaving spend limits until after launch. A limit reached in production returns HTTP 400 and requires a planned fallback.
- Keeping stale model names in code. Retirement status, tokenizers, prices and rate-limit tiers change.
What to check before going live
- The model identifier and price snapshot date are recorded.
- Average, p95 and worst-case input and output token counts are known.
- Requests crossing a prompt-length threshold are tested.
- Cache write and read counts are measured separately.
- Tool calls and geographic or fast-mode multipliers are included.
- Batch jobs are isolated from latency-sensitive traffic.
- Spend limits and auto-reload alerts have named owners.
- Retry caps and circuit breakers are enabled.
- Usage telemetry includes input, output, cache creation, cache reads, model, status and workspace.
- The estimate is refreshed when Anthropic changes prices, models or limits.
Bottom line on Claude API cost
The dependable way to price Claude API usage is to forecast tokens, not calls: calculate input and output separately, add cache writes and reads, include tools and routing premiums, then budget retries and peak demand. In most applications, the fastest savings come from capping output, selecting the least expensive model that meets the quality bar, caching stable prefixes and moving deferrable work to the Batch API’s 50% token discount. Spend limits, rate-limit handling and token-level telemetry turn that estimate into an enforceable operating process.
