Claude can reduce the repetitive work of PCB design when connected to KiCad through the KiCAD-MCP-Server, an MCP server that lets an AI assistant request actions in the electronics-design application. It can help edit schematics, place components, route traces, configure rules and run checks. That is assistance with operating the tools—not proof that a circuit is electrically sound or ready to manufacture.

How Claude works with KiCad

In the setup described by MakeUseOf author Abhishek, Claude communicates with KiCad through the KiCAD-MCP-Server. The project README describes the server as an MCP implementation for KiCad and lists schematic editing, component placement, routing, DRC/ERC checks and export among its capabilities. The project maintainers caution: “AI-generated design suggestions do not replace qualified engineering review.”

The README lists KiCad 9.0 or later, Node.js 18 or later and Python 3.11 or later as requirements, and recommends the repository’s stable branch for the latest release. These are the project’s live README details as accessed October 7, 2026; check the project README for current setup instructions before installing, since dependencies and branch guidance can change.

What the reported workflow accomplished

MakeUseOf’s August 21, 2026 account describes one person’s experience, not a controlled capability evaluation. In that account, Claude created a project and a simple schematic containing a 10 kΩ resistor and a 0.1 µF capacitor, then connected their pins. The author also reports asking it to:

These examples show the appeal: describe an editing task in ordinary language and let the assistant handle some of the application work. They do not establish that the resulting circuit was functionally correct, that the workflow will succeed for every project, or that it saves a measured amount of time.

Where AI assistance helps—and where it needs you

Good candidates for delegation

Repetitive editor operations and geometric arrangements are natural tasks to try, provided you inspect the result. A user who knows what the circuit should do can also ask for schematic or layout edits and then review those changes in KiCad. The value is reduced friction in operating the editor, not a substitute for knowing the electrical requirements.

  • 32 Boards In Five Sizes: Choose 4 × 6 cm, 3 × 7 cm, 5 × 7 cm, 2 × 8 cm or 7 × 9 cm boards for compact circuits, controller interfaces, classroom soldering exercises and larger point-to-point builds
  • Double-Sided FR4 For Soldered Prototypes: Approximately 1.6 mm FR4 provides a rigid base for permanent electronics builds, while pre-tinned plated-through holes provide solderable connections accessible from both sides
  • Standard 2.54 mm Grid Fits Common Through-Hole Parts: Lay out resistors, LEDs, DIP sockets, pin headers, terminal blocks, sensors and jumper wires on a 0.1 in pitch, then create each required connection with soldered leads, bridges or insulated wire
  • From Breadboard Test To Permanent Build: Transfer a proven circuit into a compact soldered assembly for sensor nodes, controllers, alarms and STEM demonstrations; corner mounting holes help secure finished boards in enclosures or on panels
  • Set Expectations Before Soldering: These are isolated-pad perfboards with no breadboard-style buses or stripboard traces, and the kit does not include components, wire, solder or tools; plan the layout and check continuity before applying power

Common failure points

The MakeUseOf author reports that Claude sometimes selected the wrong footprint. A footprint is the physical pad pattern and dimensions used to mount a component on the board; choosing the wrong one can make a logically plausible design incompatible with the actual part. The author also found that a user may struggle to describe a design without KiCad’s technical vocabulary, and expected manual cleanup.

That creates a practical boundary: if you cannot identify the required component, footprint, pinout, electrical connections or board constraints, you may not be able to reliably tell whether the assistant’s output is right. Learn enough KiCad and circuit design to review the work you delegate.

What DRC checks—and what it does not

KiCad’s design-rule checker evaluates a board against the requirements configured in Board Setup and checks whether pads are connected as expected. It can also check whether the PCB matches the schematic when schematic-parity checking is enabled. See the KiCad 10.0 Getting Started documentation for the version-specific workflow.

A clean DRC result means the board passed the checks that were configured and run; it does not independently prove that the circuit behaves as intended. KiCad notes that some violations cannot be prevented automatically and recommends checking DRC before producing manufacturing outputs. You still need to verify the component choices, datasheets, pin numbering, power connections, thermal behavior and the fabricator’s requirements.

A review checklist before fabrication

  1. Verify parts and footprints. Match each actual manufacturer part number to its datasheet. Check footprint dimensions, pad layout and pin numbering against the physical component.
  2. Inspect the schematic and nets. Confirm that connections express the intended circuit, with particular attention to power, ground and any connections the assistant added or changed.
  3. Check the board against its constraints. Confirm dimensions, mounting-hole positions, clearances and other requirements against the chosen fabricator’s specifications.
  4. Refresh zones and run DRC. Refill copper zones before checking, review each reported issue, and enable schematic-parity checking where applicable. Do not treat a passing check as electrical approval.
  5. Inspect manufacturing outputs. Review the generated Gerber and drill files, and confirm their layers, settings and formats against the fabricator’s current requirements.

Exporting files does not make a board production-ready

KiCad uses Gerber as its primary PCB manufacturing plot format and supports exporting manufacturing and drill files. The exact outputs and settings depend on the board and fabrication service; exporting files alone does not confirm that they are complete or suitable for a particular order. KiCad’s CLI documentation describes its manufacturing-output flow. Follow the selected fabricator’s specifications and inspect the exported files before submitting them.

Is Claude able to design a PCB?

It can assist with parts of the design workflow by translating requests into KiCad operations. The reported examples include schematic edits, component arrangement, routing, rule setup and checks. But the account is an individual report, and the project itself says AI-generated suggestions require qualified engineering review. Treat Claude as an assistant for editor work: you remain responsible for the circuit, parts, layout constraints, validation and manufacturing handoff.
