To edit a document inside Microsoft Word, install Anthropic’s Claude for Microsoft 365 add-in, open its sidebar, sign in, and ask Claude to work on the document. Microsoft’s Marketplace listing says Word edits appear as tracked changes and that Claude can work through comment threads, so you can review edits before accepting them.
What you need before connecting Claude to Word
- A compatible Word app: Microsoft lists Word on the web and Word 2016 or later on Windows or Mac for the add-in. Check the current Microsoft Marketplace listing for applicable compatibility details.
- An eligible Claude plan: The Marketplace listing describes the add-in as generally available on paid Claude plans. A separate Claude for Word listing names Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Plan eligibility can change; confirm the terms in the current listing.
- Permission to install add-ins: If Word is managed by your workplace or school, administrator policy may control which add-ins you can use.
How to install and use Claude in Word
- Find the add-in. Search Microsoft Marketplace for “Claude for Microsoft 365,” or open Word and select Insert in the ribbon, then Add-ins. Microsoft’s directions explain how to view and launch installed add-ins in Word for the web.
- Install and launch it. Follow the Marketplace or in-Word prompts to add Claude, then open it from Word’s add-ins controls. The Marketplace listing offers the add-in for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Sign in and describe the task. In Claude’s Word sidebar, sign in and specify both the change you want and the part of the document to work on. For example: “Revise the introduction to be more concise, but keep the technical terms and existing heading.”
- Review the proposed edits. The Marketplace says Word changes appear as tracked changes and Claude can work with comment threads. Inspect revisions in Word and accept or reject them according to your needs; don’t treat suggested edits as automatically approved.
What the Word add-in does—and what it does not
Claude for Microsoft 365 puts Claude alongside the open document so you can ask it to draft or revise content without switching to a separate file-upload workflow. Anthropic describes in-place drafting and redlining in its product guide; Microsoft’s Marketplace listing describes tracked edits and comment-thread support.
The add-in is different from Anthropic’s Microsoft 365 connector. The connector lets Claude search and analyze work content across SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook, and Teams; it is not required simply to edit the document currently open in Word. Anthropic says the connector requires a work Microsoft 365 account, and an administrator may need to enable it. See Anthropic’s connector instructions.

| What you want to do | Use | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Edit a document while staying in Word | Claude for Microsoft 365 add-in | Word sidebar; Marketplace says edits appear as tracked changes and supports work with comment threads. |
| Ask Claude to analyze a Word file outside Word | Upload the document to Claude | A separate file-based workflow. If Claude for Word is missing or unavailable
- Check the Word client: Verify that you are using a client listed as supported in the Marketplace, and check the listing for current requirements.
- Check your Claude plan: Confirm that your account has access under the current Marketplace terms.
- Ask your Microsoft 365 administrator: For managed accounts, add-in availability may be restricted by organizational policy. There is no single administrator deployment path established for every tenant, so your organization’s IT team is the right contact if you cannot install it.
