Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a single-player game, not a multiplayer or co-op RPG. Its story has two reported endings, with the final choice centered on Maelle and Verso. The game’s lead writer has said that neither ending is correct, official, or canon. New Game Plus is not confirmed by the official and store pages reviewed for this guide, so it should be treated as unverified rather than definitively available or absent.
Quick answer
| Feature | What is established | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Multiplayer | Steam lists Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as Single-player. | Do not expect online co-op, local co-op, or a separate multiplayer mode based on the published feature listing. |
| Playable party | The official PlayStation overview describes a party of recruitable characters. | You control several characters in combat; that does not make the game multiplayer. |
| New Game Plus | The official publisher, PlayStation, and Steam pages reviewed do not directly confirm a New Game Plus mode. | The honest answer is unresolved. Store-page silence is not proof that the mode does not exist. |
| Endings | Coverage describes two conclusions associated with Maelle and Verso. | Your final choice determines which conclusion you see. |
| Canon ending | Lead writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen has rejected the idea that one ending is official or correct. | There is no developer-designated “right” outcome to unlock. |
Does Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 have multiplayer?
No. The Steam store listing identifies Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as a single-player game. That is the clearest published feature classification for the question, and nothing in the reviewed official descriptions adds a co-op or competitive mode.

The confusion usually comes from the game’s party structure. The official PlayStation FAQ and overview describe recruitable characters who form a party. In a party-based role-playing game, several heroes can fight together while one person still controls the entire group. “Party” describes the characters available to the player; it does not mean that each character is controlled by a different player.
How the combat description fits
The PlayStation material describes a turn-based RPG with real-time actions, including dodging, parrying, and counterattacking. Those timing-based actions occur during your own battles. They are not evidence of a second player joining the session, and they should not be read as an online action-game feature.

What you should expect on a single-player run
- You make the strategic decisions for the party.
- You recruit and use the game’s available characters as members of that party.
- You perform the real-time defensive or counter actions yourself while the turn-based battle system proceeds.
- The published Steam feature label gives no indication of a separate multiplayer lobby, matchmaking system, or co-op campaign.
Unless a later developer update changes the feature set, buy or start the game expecting a solo campaign. A friend can discuss choices or watch you play, but the published feature information does not support treating that as an in-game co-op experience.
Is there a New Game Plus mode?
There is no verified yes-or-no answer in the official and store information reviewed for this article. The publisher page, PlayStation material, and Steam listing establish the platforms, genre, party structure, combat approach, and single-player classification, but they do not directly confirm a New Game Plus mode.
That distinction matters. A store description that does not mention New Game Plus is not the same as a statement that New Game Plus is absent. Conversely, the lack of a denial is not evidence that the mode exists. Without a direct announcement, patch note, manual entry, or other authoritative statement about carrying progress into a new run, the responsible status is unverified.

Do not purchase the game on the assumption that a second run will automatically retain levels, equipment, skills, collectibles, or other progression. None of those carry-over rules are established by the pages reviewed. If a New Game Plus mode is important to you, check the latest official platform listing and developer announcements at the time you play, because post-launch features can be documented after an initial store description is published.

Do not infer New Game Plus from the existence of multiple endings either. A branching finale can encourage replaying, but replay value and a formally supported New Game Plus mode are separate features. The available information confirms the former story structure while leaving the latter unresolved.
Does the game have multiple endings?
Spoiler warning: The following section names the characters connected with the finale and explains the nature of the ending choice.
Yes. Reporting on Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 describes two endings. The conclusions are framed around Maelle and Verso, and the final decision determines which conclusion the player sees. The available descriptions characterize the outcomes as morally and emotionally mixed rather than presenting one as an unambiguously happy resolution.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy the choice is not simply a good-versus-evil switch
The game’s lead writer, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, has said that there is “no correct ending,” “no canon ending,” and “no official Sandfall ending.” She has also described both endings as deliberately designed, imperfect, and heartbreaking in their own ways. That is a direct rejection of the idea that players are expected to discover one hidden developer-approved result.
Rank #3
PC Gamer reported Svedberg-Yen describing the situation as a “Schrodinger’s ending” and saying the endings are “equally valid,” depending on whose good or whose happily-ever-after the player is prioritising. In practical terms, the choice asks you to decide which perspective and consequence you value, not to pass a morality test with one officially correct answer.
What the two endings do and do not establish
- They establish two reported story conclusions, not a multiplayer branch or a separate game mode.
- The final choice is associated with Maelle and Verso, so the decision has character and perspective consequences.
- Neither conclusion should be labelled canon, official, or objectively correct.
- The published comments do not justify reducing the endings to a simple “best” and “worst” ranking.
The coverage available for this feature question does not provide a complete scene-by-scene account of every consequence. If you want to experience the narrative without foreknowledge, stop at the spoiler warning and make the final decision based on your own reading of the characters.
How to handle the ending choice without choosing for someone else
Because the developer has intentionally left both outcomes valid, there is no universal recommendation to follow. A useful way to approach the finale is to ask which character’s goals, relationships, and idea of a satisfying resolution you have prioritised during your playthrough.

- Follow the character motivations that have mattered most to you rather than searching for an external “correct” answer.
- Read the final decision in terms of whose future or version of happiness it protects.
- Make a choice once you understand the immediate stakes, accepting that the game’s own authorial position treats both outcomes as intentionally imperfect.
For a second look at the story
If you want to compare the conclusions, use your platform’s normal save-management options before the point of no return only if the game permits that kind of save. Do not assume that a manual save will preserve every late-game state or that a New Game Plus system will be available; neither behavior is established by the reviewed sources. A separate playthrough is the dependable way to see the other reported conclusion when you do not have a suitable save.

- Explore a fantasy world inspired by Belle Époque France in which you battle devastating enemies.
Platforms and editions
The official publisher page lists the game for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. That page also identifies a Standard Edition in both physical and digital formats. The PlayStation material specifically covers the PS5 version.
Platform availability does not change the feature answers above: the published Steam listing classifies the game as single-player, while the ending structure is part of the story rather than a platform-specific multiplayer option. Physical stock, digital storefront availability, regional editions, and current pricing can change, so verify those details on the storefront for your region before buying.
Common misconceptions, corrected
“There are several heroes, so it must support co-op.”
Not according to the published feature information. A recruitable party is a single-player control model unless the developer separately advertises shared control, online co-op, or local multiplayer. Steam’s single-player label is the relevant classification here.
“Two endings means there must be New Game Plus.”
No. Multiple conclusions give you a narrative reason to replay, but they do not prove that the game has a New Game Plus ruleset. The reviewed official pages do not confirm that mode.
Best Value
“One ending is the real one.”
The lead writer’s reported comments say the opposite. Both endings were included deliberately, and neither is described as canon or officially correct.
“Real-time parries make it an online action game.”
The PlayStation description presents dodging, parrying, and counterattacking as real-time actions within a turn-based RPG. Timing during your own combat is not a multiplayer feature.
What is confirmed, and what is still open
Several parts of the feature question have firm answers: the game is listed as single-player; its party of recruitable characters is controlled within that solo structure; the combat combines turn-based decisions with real-time actions; and reporting describes two endings tied to a final Maelle-or-Verso choice. The writer’s comments also make the developers’ position on canon clear: neither ending is the official answer.

New Game Plus is the only part of the question that remains unresolved by the reviewed official and store pages. Treat that as a documentation limit, not as a hidden confirmation or a definitive denial. If a later authoritative announcement addresses the mode, that announcement should supersede the earlier absence of information.
