The Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS) is a two-hour, remotely proctored, hands-on Kubernetes exam. You must have passed the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), but the CKA does not need to be active. To prepare, use CNCF’s published curriculum as your checklist and practise Kubernetes command-line work, giving extra study time to the three domains that each carry 20% of the listed exam weight.
What is the CKS certification?
The CKS is developed by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) in collaboration with The Linux Foundation. Its purpose is to assess security practices for container-based applications and Kubernetes platforms across build, deployment, and runtime. CNCF publishes an open-source curriculum to guide preparation.
The credential is based on a practical exam rather than a multiple-choice test. The CNCF CKS exam page describes it as an online, proctored, performance-based assessment requiring candidates to solve multiple tasks from a Kubernetes command line. Candidates have two hours.

Do I need an active CKA to take CKS?
You must have passed the CKA before attempting CKS, but CNCF says your CKA does not have to be active. The CKS exam page identifies CKA as the prerequisite; it does not identify KCNA as a requirement.

How hard is the CKS exam?
CNCF does not publish a pass rate, average preparation time, or a difficulty rating on the cited exam page. The useful measure is the format: you have two hours to complete practical Kubernetes command-line tasks under remote proctoring. That makes applied command-line practice central to preparation; reading about security concepts alone does not rehearse the exam’s working format.
Your CKA background gives you a foundation in Kubernetes administration, but it does not establish that you are ready for the security-focused tasks. Identify what you can already perform reliably, then practise the curriculum’s security areas in a command-line setting.

What topics are on the CKS exam?
CNCF lists six domains and their weights. The three domains weighted at 20% each together account for 60% of the listed exam weight; the remaining three account for 40%.

These are CNCF’s published categories and weights. Use them to allocate study time, not to skip a lower-weight domain: together, Cluster Setup, Cluster Hardening, and System Hardening make up 40% of the listed weight.

How should I study for CKS?
- Start with the official curriculum. Treat CNCF’s open-source CKS curriculum as the scope checklist. Mark topics you can execute confidently, topics you understand but need to practise, and topics that are new to you.
- Prioritize by weight and proficiency. Give the three 20% domains substantial attention, especially where your command-line execution is uncertain. Allocate time to all six domains, including the two 15% domains and the 10% Cluster Setup domain.
- Practise the work, not just the terminology. Use a Kubernetes command-line environment for hands-on study. Set a timer for practice sessions so you get used to working within a fixed period, but treat those sessions as preparation—not as evidence of an exam pass threshold or a replica of the live exam environment.
- Choose learning materials by fit and freshness. CNCF describes its Kubernetes Security Essentials course as aligned with CKS requirements. CNCF also announced CKS training and certification bundles through its Udemy partnership in June 2026. Compare any course with the current official curriculum, its hands-on Kubernetes practice, its fit with your CKA experience, version freshness, and total cost; no course ranking follows from those descriptions.
- Check book editions before buying. If you use a printed Kubernetes security guide, compare its publication date and the Kubernetes version it covers with the current official curriculum. A specific current book listing or edition is not established here.
- Recheck the official exam page before booking. CNCF says quarterly exam updates are planned to match Kubernetes releases. That is a stated plan, not a guarantee of a particular update in every quarter; confirm the current curriculum and registration details before scheduling.
How much does CKS cost?
CNCF’s exam page currently lists CKS at $445, including one free retake. The certification is valid for two years from award. These are current page details and can change, so verify the registration page before purchasing. The cited information does not establish a passing score or exam pass rate.

Under CNCF’s CARE update, effective June 18, 2026, passing CKS or recertifying CKS automatically reinstates or extends CKA to match the new CKS expiration date. In its June 17, 2026 announcement, Christophe Sauthier, CNCF’s Cloud Native Training and Certification Lead, said that passing or recertifying CKS would automatically reinstate or extend CKA. Check CNCF’s current certification guidance for the applicable dates and status of your credentials.
