To host CivilizationPack for friends, use the pack’s matching Minecraft 1.18.2 Forge release, install Java 17, create a clean Forge server, then apply the official CivilizationPack Server Pack 3.24. Accept Minecraft’s EULA, keep every client on the identical pack and Forge versions, and configure your firewall and router so remote players can reach the server. The same files can be installed on a managed host if you prefer a control panel over local administration.
Confirm the release before installing anything
Modded Minecraft servers are version-locked. The current project metadata identifies CivilizationPack v3.24 — The Urban Update (First part) as the latest release for Minecraft 1.18.2 with Forge, and the files listing includes a matching Server Pack 3.24. Choose that exact combination before downloading Forge or copying files.

The project description lists 297 active mods for its 1.18.2 edition (a description published by the CivilizationPack Team in 2020). Project metadata captured in 2026 lists 17,613 downloads on CurseForge. Both numbers are time-sensitive; treat the project page and its changelog as the authority when you install.
Choose between self-hosting and a managed host
Self-hosting costs no separate hosting subscription, but you are responsible for Java, Forge, files, backups, firewall rules, port forwarding and upgrades. A managed host provides a web panel or launcher workflow and usually handles the public network endpoint, while you pay a recurring fee and accept the host’s storage, CPU, backup and cancellation policies.

The official CivilizationPack project page names Akliz as its hosting route. VeryGames also lists CivilizationPack hosting with launcher-compatible installation and version selection. These listings do not establish current pricing, capacity, backup retention or support for every release, so verify those details with the provider before ordering.
Requirements for a self-hosted server
- A computer or virtual machine that can remain online while friends play.
- Java 17 installed and available to the Forge launch script.
- Enough free storage for the server files, generated world and backups. The available sources do not publish a CivilizationPack-specific minimum RAM allocation or guaranteed player capacity, so do not rely on a universal number.
- Permission to create firewall rules and, for players outside your home network, to configure the router.
- The Minecraft 1.18.2 Forge installer and the official CivilizationPack Server Pack 3.24.
Install Java 17 and verify the runtime
Minecraft 1.18 Forge server guidance specifies Java 17. Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime appropriate for your operating system, then open a terminal or command prompt and run:

A common cause of an immediate server exit is that the generated Forge script is invoking a different Java executable than the one you tested. On systems with multiple Java installations, use the full path to the Java 17 executable in the script or select Java 17 as the operating system’s default.

Create a clean Forge server directory
- Create a new folder dedicated to this server, such as
CivilizationPack-1.18.2. Do not place it inside an existing vanilla world or another modpack’s directory. - Download the Forge installer for Minecraft 1.18.2 and run it with the Install Server option. Select the new folder as the destination.
- Let the installer finish downloading libraries and generating the Forge launch files. Keep the installer and generated files together until you have confirmed a successful start.
- Do not copy an old
mods,config,worldordefaultconfigsdirectory into this clean installation. Old files can silently override the release you intended to run.
The exact script name depends on the operating system and Forge installer build. Use the generated Forge script rather than inventing a custom command, because it includes the libraries and arguments that the installer calculated for this version.
Apply the official CivilizationPack Server Pack
- Download Server Pack 3.24 from the same CivilizationPack release listing as the client pack.
- Stop the server if it is running and extract the server-pack contents into the Forge server directory.
- Allow the pack’s
modsandconfigdirectories to merge with the Forge installation. If the archive contains additional server defaults, copy those as well. - Inspect the resulting
modsfolder for client-only additions. A mod that only supplies a graphical effect, minimap display or other client feature can cause a dedicated server to stop during loading; remove client-only mods while retaining every server-required dependency. - Keep a copy of the original server-pack archive and record the release number in a text file beside the server directory. This makes a later comparison possible if a player reports a mismatch.
Installing only the client profile is not sufficient. The server pack is the authoritative set of server-side mods and configuration, and it must remain synchronized with the files installed on every player’s computer.
First launch, EULA and basic settings
- Run the Forge-generated server script once from the server directory. The first run creates files and normally stops while it waits for EULA acceptance.
- Open
eula.txtand changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly after reading and accepting Minecraft’s EULA. - Run the same Forge script again. Watch the console until it reports that the server has finished loading and is listening for connections.
- Stop the server with the console
stopcommand before editing files or making backups. Avoid closing the terminal or killing the process while the world is saving.
Edit server.properties only while the server is stopped. Set a distinctive motd, choose a difficulty, and decide whether to enable a whitelist. Leave server-port at its configured value unless you have a reason to change it; Java Minecraft installations commonly use port 25565. If you change it, the firewall rule, router rule and address given to players must all use the same port.

Grant administrator privileges from the server console with op PlayerName, replacing PlayerName with the exact in-game name. For a private group, enable the whitelist and add players with whitelist add PlayerName. Keep operator access limited to people you trust.
Set memory without relying on a made-up minimum
There is no authoritative CivilizationPack-specific minimum RAM figure or guaranteed player capacity in the available project information. Start with the memory settings in the generated Forge script, then observe actual behavior with your expected number of players. Increase the maximum heap only when logs show memory pressure and the machine has RAM to spare; allocating nearly all system memory can make the operating system or other services unstable.
- Change one setting at a time and restart the server cleanly.
- Watch for repeated out-of-memory errors, long pauses during world generation or a steadily growing process size.
- Keep the operating system, backups and any voice-chat or monitoring services outside the Java heap allocation.
- Record the previous working values so you can roll back after an unsuccessful change.
Make the server reachable from outside your home network
Local players can usually connect with the host computer’s private address. Friends on the internet need a reachable external address and a path through both the computer’s firewall and the home router.

- Allow the Java runtime used by the Forge script through the operating system firewall. If prompted, allow private networks for a trusted home LAN; expose public access only when you understand the risk.
- In the router’s port-forwarding page, forward the server’s TCP port (commonly 25565) from the router to the host computer’s private IP address. Reserve that private IP in the router or set a static address so the rule does not break after a reboot.
- Confirm that the router’s external address is the one your friends should use. Do not give strangers your private LAN address.
- Have a friend test from a different network, such as a mobile connection. Testing only from inside the same Wi-Fi can hide forwarding errors.
- If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT and does not give you an inbound address, ordinary forwarding may not work. Use a port-tunneling service or a managed host instead.
The official Minecraft guidance notes that Java hosting may require firewall and network configuration. A successful local connection does not prove that remote access is configured.

Prepare every player’s client
- Install the same CivilizationPack release that the server runs: for the captured current line, v3.24 for Minecraft 1.18.2 Forge.
- Use the same Forge loader family and let the pack’s launcher or profile install its complete client files.
- Do not add optional mods until the server has been tested with an unchanged pack. If you do customize, document the change and apply only server-compatible additions.
- Copy any configuration that the server administrator explicitly distributes. A client with a different required configuration can be rejected even when its visible mod list looks correct.
- Connect using the server’s reachable address and port. For a LAN player, the private address may be appropriate; for an internet player, use the external address or managed-host address.
When upgrading, update the server and all clients as one change. Read the CivilizationPack changelog first; the project page specifically warns that changelogs can contain helpful release information.

Back up before every change
Stop the server cleanly, then copy the world directory, server.properties, config, defaultconfigs, scripts and any whitelist or permissions files to storage outside the live server folder. Keep at least one backup that is not mounted as the active server directory. A backup is useful only if you can restore it, so periodically test by opening a copy on a separate installation.

Upgrade in a controlled order
- Read the release changelog and note required Forge, Java or configuration changes.
- Announce downtime and make a dated backup of the world and current server files.
- Prepare a separate test directory with the new Forge build and server pack. Do not overwrite the working installation first.
- Start the test server and inspect the console for missing dependencies, registry errors or world-conversion warnings.
- Have a client launch the identical new pack and join the test world.
- Only after the test succeeds, schedule the production upgrade. Keep the old directory untouched until players have confirmed that the new release works.
Roll back safely
If the upgraded server fails, stop it, rename the failed directory, restore the previous server directory and world backup, and return clients to the previous pack release. Never open a world in the old server after it has been saved by a newer Minecraft or mod version unless the release notes explicitly support that direction.
Managed-host setup workflow
A managed host can remove router and operating-system work, but it does not remove version matching. On a provider that lists CivilizationPack, choose a Minecraft 1.18.2 Forge deployment or upload the official Server Pack 3.24, then verify the generated files before inviting players.

- Confirm in writing that the provider supports the exact CivilizationPack release, Forge build, Java 17 and the number of concurrent players you expect.
- Check the panel’s import method: one-click pack, archive upload, launcher selection or manual file transfer. Make sure it accepts the official server-pack layout rather than a client-only profile.
- Review CPU and RAM policy, storage limits, automatic backup frequency, retention, restore fees, server location and cancellation terms.
- Deploy a private instance, accept the EULA in the panel if required, and start it once without players.
- Inspect the console and file manager for the expected
modsandconfigdirectories. Remove client-only mods if the host imported them. - Set the whitelist and operator list, then give players the provider’s address and port.
- Test a backup restore before treating the host as your only copy of the world.
A provider’s launcher-compatible label does not guarantee support for every CivilizationPack update. Recheck the exact release after each pack upgrade.

Security and maintenance checklist
- Keep Java, the operating system and Forge libraries patched within the versions supported by the pack.
- Run the server under a dedicated operating-system account without unnecessary administrator privileges.
- Enable the whitelist for a private community and give operator status only to trusted administrators.
- Do not publish your router’s management interface or file-sharing ports.
- Back up before changing mods, configs, Forge or the world.
- Keep a written inventory of the pack release, Forge version, Java version, port and backup location.
- Read release notes before accepting an automatic update from a hosting panel or launcher.
