Citigroup reported a 2.18% credit-card charge-off rate for September 2026, according to an October 15, 2026 report that cited an SEC filing. The same report put Citi’s credit-card delinquency rate at 1.35% at the end of September. The figures describe different stages of credit performance: charge-offs are losses the bank has written off, while delinquencies are past-due balances that may still be collected.
What the 2.18% September figure means
A charge-off occurs when Citi recognizes a credit-card balance as a credit loss and removes it from loans under its accounting and collection policy. Citi generally accrues interest on credit-card loans until charge-off, which typically occurs after 180 days of contractual delinquency. The 2.18% figure is therefore a loss-flow rate for September, not the percentage of every cardholder who missed a payment.
The reported 1.35% delinquency rate is a separate month-end measure. It represents credit-card balances that were past due but had not yet reached the point at which Citi normally charges them off. A delinquency can cure, be collected, or progress into a charge-off; the two percentages should not be added together.

| Measure | Reported value | Time frame | What it captures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit-card charge-off rate | 2.18% | September 2026 | Balances recognized as credit losses during the month, under Citi’s charge-off policy |
| Credit-card delinquency rate | 1.35% | At September 30, 2026 | Balances past due but not yet charged off |
The report attributes both numbers to an SEC filing. The exact September filing page containing the rates was not directly retrievable, so the percentages should be treated as reported figures rather than independently recalculated estimates. The filing context is nevertheless identifiable: Citi’s investor-relations index lists an October 13, 2026 Form 8-K, and the SEC-hosted third-quarter earnings release is dated October 13, 2026.

How the result fits Citi’s third-quarter results
The September card metrics arrived alongside Citi’s results for the quarter ended in September. The official release reported the following consolidated figures:
| Third-quarter 2026 measure | Reported amount |
|---|---|
| Total revenue | $23.845 billion |
| Net income attributable to Citigroup | $5.245 billion |
| Net credit losses | $2.217 billion |
| Total provision for credit losses | $2.586 billion |
| US Consumer Cards net credit losses | $1.7 billion, down 4% year over year |
US Consumer Cards generated $4.7 billion of revenue, unchanged from a year earlier. Net interest income increased 6%. Non-interest revenue declined 62%, primarily because of higher partner-payment accruals and rewards costs, partly offset by higher interchange and annual-fee revenue.
Rank #2
Citi Chair and CEO Jane Fraser said, “Our performance in the quarter, which included the best third-quarter revenue in a decade, positive operating leverage and meaningful improvement in our returns, reflects the continued disciplined and consistent execution of our strategy.” That statement addresses the quarter as a whole; it does not change the meaning or measurement period of the 2.18% September charge-off rate.

How to compare the 2.18% rate correctly
Compare the same metric
A charge-off rate should be compared with another charge-off rate, not with a delinquency rate. Delinquency is an early-warning measure of payment problems; charge-off is a later loss-recognition measure.
Rank #3
Match the time period
The 2.18% number is for one month, September. Citi’s earnings figures are for the entire third quarter. A quarterly loss rate cannot be inferred by multiplying the September rate by three, because balances, payment behavior, recoveries and charge-off timing vary during the quarter.
Match the portfolio
The reported rate is described as a Citigroup credit-card figure, while the earnings release separately identifies US Consumer Cards. Consolidated Citigroup metrics and a US Consumer Cards segment metric are not automatically interchangeable.
Rank #4
Check the denominator and accounting basis
The underlying balance denominator for the 2.18% rate is not stated in the available report. Rates can be calculated using different average-balance or period-balance conventions. Before comparing Citi with another issuer, confirm the portfolio definition, denominator, treatment of recoveries and whether the figure covers consolidated loans or a securitized portfolio.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy securitized-trust data can look different
SEC trust reports may publish loss and delinquency statistics for credit-card receivables held in a securitization. Those figures describe the trust’s portfolio and reporting conventions, not necessarily Citi’s consolidated balance sheet. A trust’s loss rate or delinquency rate should not be presented as identical to the 2.18% or 1.35% Citigroup measures without confirming that the portfolios and accounting bases match.

What readers can conclude
- The reported September 2026 Citi credit-card charge-off rate was 2.18%.
- The reported month-end credit-card delinquency rate was 1.35%.
- The two rates measure different stages of credit performance and use different dates within the reporting cycle.
- Citi’s official third-quarter release showed $1.7 billion in US Consumer Cards net credit losses, down 4% year over year, within $2.217 billion of consolidated net credit losses.
- The available report does not provide the underlying September balance denominator, so the 2.18% figure should not be reverse-engineered into a dollar loss without additional filing detail.
