Cities: Skylines II is best suited to players who want a broad, systems-focused city-building sandbox and have a PC close to its substantial recommended requirements. Its main advantages are the scale and connected simulation the game aims to offer, plus ongoing PC updates and content. Its main cautions are performance demands and a Steam review history that remains mixed overall, even though recent reviews are more positive.

What kind of game is Cities: Skylines II?

Cities: Skylines II is a single-player city-building simulation for PC. You lay infrastructure, zone land, expand a city, manage its changing economy, and respond to residents’ needs. Paradox describes building upward and across a larger map; Steam presents it as a city-building sandbox. That is the intended creative appeal, not an independent measurement of map size. Paradox’s game overview and the Steam listing emphasize city planning and an open-ended building experience.

What are the main pros?

A large canvas for planning and building

The game is designed for players who enjoy shaping a city over time: placing roads and infrastructure, zoning, and expanding the urban area. Its scale and flexibility are central to its appeal, especially if you prefer open-ended construction to a narrowly scripted objective. Steam’s phrase “world-building without limits” is marketing language, not a guarantee that every building or city plan is possible.

Connected systems give planning broader consequences

Official descriptions highlight AI, city economics, infrastructure, citizen life paths, climate, pollution, changing weather, and seasonal challenges. The appeal is that development choices are framed as affecting more than the city’s appearance. Players looking for a simulation to manage as well as a place to design may find that breadth compelling. Paradox’s overview and Steam’s product description outline those systems.

PC updates and additional content continue

Paradox’s news index lists ongoing 2026 patches and development posts. Expansion Pass 2 became available on PC in September 2026, but it combines an immediate unlock with announced future content. At the time of the published schedule, Downtown Market Set was available immediately; Park Adventures was planned for Q4 2026, creator packs for Q1 2027, and City Vacations and a map pack for Q2 2027. These are scheduled dates, not confirmation that each item has been released; check the current product page for status. Paradox’s news page, the Expansion Pass 2 page, and the September 2026 announcement describe the updates and schedule.

What are the main cons and caveats?

It calls for relatively powerful PC hardware

Paradox Support explicitly describes the game as “performance-heavy.” Steam’s recommended PC specifications are an Intel Core i5-12600K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, 16 GB of RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 (10 GB) or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT (16 GB). Those are the store’s recommended specifications, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or consistent performance in a large, detailed city. Meeting only the lower minimum requirements does not establish how the game will run in demanding late-game situations. Steam lists the requirements; Paradox’s optimization guide discusses setup considerations, including virtual texturing. It notes that buildings may appear dark or show graphical artifacts while textures are processing, so its advice should not be read as a promise that a given PC will run smoothly.

Player reception is mixed overall

Steam’s review snapshot accessed in 2026 showed 57% positive among 34,605 English-language reviews overall, categorized as Mixed. Its moving 30-day window showed 73% positive among 770 reviews, categorized as Mostly Positive. The recent sample is more favorable, but it is smaller and time-limited; neither figure is a survey of all players, and both can change. Steam’s listing displays the current review summaries.

  • Consider it if: you enjoy detailed city planning, open-ended building, and managing interconnected systems, and your PC is suited to the recommended requirements.
  • Be cautious if: you need a low-hardware-demand game, expect uniform performance as a city grows, or want to judge it by a single review score.
